Designing for a Second Life: Spectacle + Resource

Architecture is a visible symbol of the values it represents; with a careful

consideration of culture, climate, and construction, it becomes a latentmanifestation and expressive icon of the collective images of people, place and time. However, todays developers are eager to create instant

and immediate icons. Such egocentric movement within iconicarchitecture has made an extreme spectacle to fall into an extreme ruin.

One of the major phenomena that reflect this paradigm is theabandoned and underutilized Olympic venues after the Games.

True icon should value a carefully planned architecture that is functionaland beautiful adjunct to the immediate environment. By conceptualizingsecond life with the first life in the initial design stage, and rethinking the

stadium as another type of program, I would like to propose a new

stadium typology for other cities and introduce a language ofresourcefulness as a new notion of spectacle.

The spectacle is not a collection of images, but a social relation among people,

    mediated by images.

    RECONSIDERING theSpectacle

    Q. Can the Olympic spectacle be reformulated away from boasting wealth toboasting resourcefulness?

Can we design an intended post-use to produce new type of global image?

Can the post-use reinvent the stadium typology?
