At the outset I would like to thank all the Fellows and Members who encouraged me and placed trust in appointing me as the President of the SLCOG. I thank all those who participated at the Induction ceremony and pledged to support in the coming year. I am fully aware of the burden and expect you to understand that I have to work extra while attending to the normal commitments at Hospital and personal matters. I assure that I will extend my duty to my best of ability and for the best interest of the college.

Two months have gone already and we are working hard to arrange and plan the year. There were many administrative matters needing attention and action. PPIUD – FIGO Project, PPIUD – Harvard Project, Skills Laboratory, Liverpool Training program on EMOC, MRCOG part I exam conducted on 07.03.2016, SAIDIP/ DIPAP conference on Medical Disorders planned on 8,9 and 10th September have kept us busy.

The annual academic sessions are planned on 1,2 and 3rd July at Hotel Galadari. Please keep the days free and invite possible resource for the session and pre-congress workshops in advance.

South Asian Initiative in Diabetes in Pregnancy (SAIDIP) based in India with the participation of Dr Hema Divakar and Dr Anil Kapoor and Diabetes in Pregnancy in Asia Paci�c (DIPAP) based in Israel headed by Prof Moshe Hodd are planning their conference in Sri-Lanka. Prof C Wijeratna with SLMA is coordinating it and we are the host local agency. The details will be available later.

Dr S Hemapriya has arranged the �rst safe motherhood program at Monaragala on 13/14 of March. Dr S Lenarol has arranged a training workshop in subfertility in Bangalore in late March. Four members were selected out of 14 applicants and the way of selection has been circulated already.

PPIUD program headed for a crisis as the �nancial statement for 2015 was not approved at due time and the national coordinator has resigned. We are working hard to get the project back on tract and how to run the project for the best interest of SLCOG.

Dr Prathapan is working on the ERPM course.

The Skills Lab is nearing completion.

As mentioned in my theme at the Induction “Serve Women and Save the World” we need to commit ourselves to women with dedication and women in return will take part in saving the world.

I understand the Ladies forum is planning Singhalese and Tamil New year celebrations at College house in late April.

I �rmly believe that if every one of us does a little dedication to the college expected from you, eventually an enormous achievement could be made.

Appreciation Dr. Nisal Thilinisannka Kurukulasuriya FRCS FRCOG FSLCOG

Dr Nisal Thilinisanka Kurukulasuriya FRCS FRCOG FSLCOG a�ectionately known as “Bunty” passed away recently in the loving care of his family.

My �rst contact with Dr Kurukulasuriya was when I was a �nal year medical student in the Colombo Medical Faculty. Dr Kurukulasuriya was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the time. He was a brilliant undergraduate teacher whose explicit dictates and de�nitions are often recalled with a�ection by students years later. He presented complex problems in the simplest terms. During his ward rounds Dr Kurukulasuriya inculcated in us that the attitude of the doctor - and thus of the medical student - was of crucial importance in looking after women. He was truly concerned about his students and juniors. Lamenting his untimely death with two of my batch mates they recalled “cutting” a ward class during the Professorial Unit clinical appointment in our �nal year. They were waiting at the bus halt in front of the Bloemfontein Medical Hostel when Dr Kurukulasuriya drove past in his white Volkswagen Beetle. He stopped, reversed and inquired as to why they had

missed the class. There was no raving and ranting, no threats. He only showed his concern for them and wanted them to prepare themselves fully for the vocation they had selected. Today, one of them is a well-known obstetrician and gynaecologist in the private sector. For us also he was strict but he thought us the �ner points which helped one to be a good clinician. He would observe how Prof S.H.P. Nanayakkara was operating and later tell us the �ner points which made the surgery look easy which we were not able to pick up. Today we realize the values of his teachings particularly when we are in di�cult situations while practicing.Dr. Kurukulasuriya was full of humour and his company was enjoyed by everybody. There was never a dull moment when he was around.

Dr Kurukulasuriya was proud of his alma mater - Royal College Colombo. There he truly learnt of books and learnt of men and learnt to play the game. He was a member of the First XI cricket team and earned his colors. He was an all-rounder, a left arm “Chinaman” exponent and a left hand batsman who pulverised the Trinity College attack in Asgiriya prior to the traditional Royal -Thomian encounter, scoring a record double century. He also excelled in other sports like swimming, tennis, badminton and table tennis. His �are to sports did not deter him from his studies. After been successful in The GCE A/L examination in the �rst attempt he entered the Colombo Medical Faculty and graduated. He chose to specialize in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and did his training under the late Dr Ariyaman Mendis in Sri Lanka at the De Soysa Hospital for Women. He proceeded to the United Kingdom and he worked in several hospitals in England and Scotland; these include the Warrington In�rmary, Royal In�rmary Stirling, St.Mary’s Hospital, London and Hammersmith Hospital, London and obtained Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecogists and the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons.

On his return to Sri Lanka Dr Kurukulasuriya joined the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Peradeniya and later transferred to the University of Colombo where he worked for around 10 years. As an intern house o�cer, Registrar and Senior Registrar I was privileged to have learnt from him. He was a tremendous supporter, inspiration, mentor and role model to many young obstetricians and gynaecologists who came into contact with him.He was a council member of the Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists and served as its Editor for some period .

He will be remembered with gratitude and a�ection by thousands of women whose complaints he listened to with attention, and by those he cared for in pregnancy. Dr Kurukulasuriya was incredibly kind, generous, diplomatic, and an absolute gentleman. He was a devout practicing Buddhist who was close to the Temple and priests and was guided by them. He did not aspire to achieve high positions and was contended with whatever he had.

Dr. Kurukulasuriya was also very a�ectionate to his family, his wife, three children & grandchildren. This attachment to the family made him retire from active practice pre maturely and this was a great loss for the patients and to the Obstetrics and Gynaecology community in Sri LankaHis untimely death was a shock to all of us and we wish to express our heartfelt condolences to his dear Wife and children. May he achieve Nibbana Soon..

Safe Motherhood ProgrammeMonaragala

First Safe Motherhood Programme for the year 2016 was held on 14th March at RDHS O�ce Monaragala. Hands on session on Ultra sound Scanning and Surgical techniques were conducted at General Hospital Monaragala. Dr. Suminda Premarathna and Dr. Sampath Kariyawasam and Dr. Gayan Ariyadasa (MO MCH) coordinated the event.Dr. Gamini Perera, Dr. Hemantha Perera, Prof. Kapila Gunawardena, Dr. Kanishka Karunarathna, Dr. Sardha Hemapriya, Dr. Wsantha Jayalath, Dr. Kapila Hanwellage, Dr. S.A.Tushanthan, Dr.Harsha Atapattu and Dr. Mangala Dissanayake participated as resource persons.
