SLC NEWSLETTER 29TH MARCH 2018
Happy Easter
Management and staff would like to wish all SLC Members a safe and happy Easter!
The weather looks like a couple of cracker days, and with the greens firming up after the recent
renovations make sure you take every opportunity to get out on the course while tee shirts and
shorts are viable options!
Following this weekend we will move to 2 tee starts on Saturday’s and Sundays!
Also, to assist in pace of play on Medal Day, the first 6 flights off each tee will be limited to 3
players. We’ll monitor this over the next couple of months and decide whether this becomes a
permanent fixture on stroke rounds.
Golf Results
Finally, some rain arrived, unfortunately it was right in the middle of Saturday’s comp. 95
entrants braved the conditions and it was no deterrent for Matt Von Wald who was the only
player to shoot in the 40s with a great score of 42, no fair-weather golfer there. Pete Dundon
continued his fine form, not only racking up the fairway stats but also another comp win with
35pts on a countback. Jim Carr took out C grade by 10 points with a whopping 38pts… talk
about lapping the field Jim great stuff! David Brand won the pro pin on 6, with a handy $81 to hit
the account just in anticipation for his next purchase after the TaylorMade demo day coming up
on April the 13th.
The rainy weather continued from Saturday onto Sunday, with 95 entrants who braved the
unpleasant conditions. Travis Lynch paid attention to his children’s junior clinic to win A grade
with 37 points. Alvy Destanovic wins B Grade and looking for a career change in golf with 39
points. John Tong was the only person to reach 40 points in the field and winning C grade.
Garreth Bohanes won the Pro Pin on 2 which he will put his winnings of $67.00 on his new
Srixon driver.
The weather was almost just as good as our golf on Wednesday. 75 entrants wearing shorts and
enjoying the weather. Damien Gnezda’s practice this week surely did pay off by winning A grade
with 65 Nett. Paul lizard Didham just winning B grade by 1 point with 66 Net, maybe his cart is
giving him goodluck. Yong-Gyi Hwang winning C grade also by one shot with 66 Nett aswell.
Allan Pilkington showing off and winning the Pro Pin on 6.
Twilight golf is ends this evening with the end of daylights saving this weekend. Peter
Austerberry is leading twilight followed by Johnny Vlahiotis. The winner will receive a Titleist hat
and balls. Good luck!
Pennant Update
Trying conditions met our Pennant players at Rossdale Golf Club last Sunday.
Our Division 2 Men’s squad went down 4/3 to Heidelberg. With Jaryd Grant defeating young gun
Cruze Strange 3&1. Imran Muftarov defeated Andrew Abbott 3&2 and Daniel Amen defeating
Dean Jones 3&2.
Colts also went down 4&1 with Tommi Wesley our sole victor winning 1up. Good luck to
everyone for the rest of the season. This weekend there isn’t a match for Easter, the following
week will be played at Rosanna Golf Club.
The senior Vets are thanking Mark Winter for saving them from dropping their pants with his
solitary victory over a strong Gisborne side. There’s no game this week (Good Friday) and next
round is at Melbourne Airport v Kooringal.
Cadet Series Finale
The Cadet Series has come to an end! Some dodgy weather caused numbers to be down some
weeks, but the final still created plenty of interest.
Congratulations to Brady, Adam, Taegs and Max for finishing in the top 4 and collecting eggs
and prizes donated by Hoppers Crossing Newsagency!
Make sure you congratulate Brady and Adam on Saturday, when they’ll be outside the pro shop
signing autographs and cleaning clubs!
Cadet Series will be back next spring!
Hawaiian Night
Aloha – oh what a night
Grass skirts, coconut bikinis, frangipani flowers tucked behind ears.. and that was just the guys!
Best dressed was adjudicated by decorator extraordinaire Barb (bar bar bar; bar Barbara lawn)
Lawn, and our very own Kacey. The girls winner was Lou Didham, and the grass skirt wearing
King Kahuna Paul took out the blokes prize.
From hula competitions, a limbo and a congo line that went on forever, a great night was had by
all, and we know you’ll all be back next year!
Dave ‘the beat goes on’ on drums and the find of the night Shane, who certainly got everyone
out of their seats as he belted out a few favourites, the dance floor was full after some coaxing
by Lou Didham, and Franco certainly channelled Travolta as he busted some moves!
Thanks to Baseman Bob, Tim ‘over the rainbow’ Adlington and ‘don’t mention the captain’
Teneale who kept everyone entertained with their Hawaiian inspired song choices.
Shout out to funky Joe Matina for his photography and to Damo (I should been in cocktail) and
his crew for the drinks with the little umbrellas!
The next event on your social calendar is the second of our Music Trivia nights, and I know MC
Rob McMain is counting down the days.. Stay tuned
Vale Lou Carter
It is with sadness that we advise of the passing of Lou Carter, one of our Corporate sponsors
and members. Lou, principal of Priority Cargo passed away a little over a week ago.
Lou has been a Member at Sanctuary Lakes for 5 years, our thoughts go to his wife and
children.
Sponsors Mega Day
Next monthly medal Saturday will become a Sponsors Gala Day in the Clubhouse and on the
course including the golf shop surrounds.
In the Terrace Room, Entertaining Environments’ Rob Sanders and his team will be converting a
section of the room into a custom built home theatre. A sight and sound experience not to be
missed!
Around the putting green Melbourne City LEXUS will be displaying some of their latest models
There will be a trackman longest/straightest drive competition
In addition to the usual Monthly Medal prize supplied by Melbourne City LEXUS, will be a
Bushnell Watch, Footjoy Shoes and a Titliest bag to be won, either through nearest the pins or
longest/straightest drives adjudicated by Trackman.
Other sponsors on site that day include Telstra Point Cook, Sanctuary Lakes Real Estate
Representatives & everyone’s favourite lawyer Dan Flynn from Whitelaw Flynn Lawyers.
You’ll be covered from head to toe, with Titleist Cap and Maui Jim Sunnies keeping you sun
smart, and your footjoy shoes covering your plates of meat – The Foot Clinic will provide the
opportunity to have a quick conversation or consultation ensuring you stand straight and tall.
All Green Nursery will be there, with a few flora related gifts, as will the guys from Brumby signs!
That’s not all! Stay tuned for next week’s full list of sponsors, suppliers and prizes!
What's going on with the Chipping Green?
The chipping green has been an eyesore and a source of frustration for the last few months, an
issue that has not gone unnoticed.
In the coming weeks we will be laying some couch (fairway) grass on the surface as opposed to
bent (putting), to provide a surface superior to the dirt and sand that is currently there.
The driving range will continue to have incremental improvements, most recently we have
erected a wall on the west side of the hitting bays, as well as roofing half of the area between the
bays and the main building with a view to providing some protection from inclement weather.
We have additional distance markers to be installed at 110 and 120 metres, and will continue to
maintain the grassed hitting areas to the best of our ability. To this end carts will not be allowed
on the grassed areas. Members and Club carts should be parked in the parking area allocated.
This will assist in maintaining the grassed area over the cooler month, as well as comply with
recent OH&S directions.
We will also be roping off the area in front of the pro shop, with a view to stimulating the growth
of the grassed area recently effected by the drought like conditions. You will see we have
relocated the Melbourne City Lexus display vehicle to further assist in this regrowth.
Chris in Beast Mode
Chris Andrews has just returned from New Zealand having competed in his first ever long drive
event, the New Zealand Long Drive Open. He finished 3rd overall just missing out on a trip to the
world championships. He competes again in April at the Australian Long Drive Open. His best
drive of the day was 339 metres in soft conditions
Crack Rule
Due to the dry weather experienced over the last few months, the committee has decided to
reinstate the relief from a drought crack rule.
In order to get relief, a player’s ball must rest in a ‘substantial crack caused by the recent drought
conditions’. The player must advise their marker and the marker must confirm that the crack was
caused by the dry weather. The intention of this local rule is not to obtain a free drop from a bad
lie in the rough, we have put it in place as a temporary measure and it will be reviewed once the
abnormally dry weather conditions cease.
The committee has also looked to clarify the use of smartphones and distance measuring
devices, along with the accidental movement of a ball on the green. These are in line with some
recent changes as advised by the R&A and USGA.
Footy Tipping
Going Going GAWN!!! Well big Maxy Gawn cost this writer the chance to open the season with a
perfect 9! Seconds counting down the big fella speared his shot wide, not unlike my approaches
to the 18th every second week!
2 tipsters did get all 9 correct with Joemat’s margin call missing by a solitary point!
Good luck to all this Easter Weekend.
