Slap Bass: Breaking the Mould! (L#83)
Your Action Plan
1. This entire lesson is focused on playing slap bass, butalso on being able to do so in all keys. Not just in thekey of E, which is what 99.9% of bass players seem todo. Before you work through the video lesson I wantyou to check out these two great songs (both can befound on YouTube) just to see how effective slapbass can be, and that it doesn't always have to be inthe key of E!

2. I want you to work through the lesson. Before youstart to learn the riff I want you to familiarize yourselfwith the chord tones of C minor and becomecomfortable visualizing those chord tones on theentire fingerboard. Remember, when we're playingany riff, groove or solo line it's important that we canvisualize the chord tones that we're using forwhatever harmony we're playing on top of.
3. Once you can visualize the chord tones upon thefingerboard you can start to learn the riff. Make sureyour slapping hand and forearm are rotating as Idemonstrate within the lesson. To have a clear andfluid sound and technique this is a must.

4. Once you've mastered the riff I want you to composeyour own slap riff in the key of Bb minor. The riffshould include hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides.Remember that you should always be thinking aboutchord tones when you're composing riffs andgrooves. Be aware of what notes/intervals you'reusing and why you're using them.
Once you've composed your own riff try moving it into different keys.
