Excitement grewas the experimen-tal new mode oftransport linkingthe city centre tosouth Liverpoolbecame a reality.
In November 1898electric trams startedrumbling along thelines between DerbySquare and Dingle.
Within a few weeks,
trial services along thesix mile route weredeclared a success.Over the next fewyears electric tramswere running on 140miles of track aroundthe city.
Previously tramshad been horse-drawnand had literally fol-lowed a rocky roadbefore operating suc-
cessfully.
T h e e a r l i e s tLiverpool trams ranfrom 1860 but the lineswere laid in troughs be-low the street surface,causing many acci-dents. The lines weresuch a nuisance theyhad to be taken up.
An 1868 Act ofParliament stipulatedthat the rails must be
ON THERIGHT LINES
by Stephen Guy
level with the road sur-face, reducing acci-dents although theyremained a hazard tothe unwary.
With the arrival ofelectric trams came adebate about double-deckers. Advocates ofsingle-deckers de-c la red they werequicker to load andunload passengers.
Staircases were im-proved so people couldget up and down morerapidly. However, theissue of putting roofson the top deck had tobe resolved.
E a r l y a t t e m p t sbrought complaints
that the top deck wasstuffy with an offen-sive atmosphere in thesummer.
A report declared:“Outside travellingduring a considerableportion of the year isboth pleasant and ben-eficial. It is well knownthat a large number ofpeople in the summermonths avail them-selves of it purely forconstitutional purpos-es.”
Tr a m s b e c a m eovercrowded down-stairs in cold or wetweather because peo-ple were reluctant togo on top.
Covered cars wereintroduced in 1903 –the roofs could bebrought in and out ofuse in less than aminute. Eventuallymost trams were builtwith permanently cov-ered top decks.
An open-toppedtram is pictured trav-elling along AigburthRoad where overheadpower was providedusing central poles.
More than a centu-ry ago many peoplerarely bathed andcleaning the tram in-teriors was a priority.
Squads of cleanerswent into action at the
depots making surethe trams were spickand span. Seats, floors, stairs and platformswere daily sprayedwith diluted perchlo-ride of mercury, whichwould be considered ahealth hazard today.
Bye-laws bannedpassengers from spit-ting, swearing and oth-er offensive behaviour.

STRANGE TALES
MARCH OF THETREE BEINGS
by Anton Valdemart
Henry Blynk was the first to admit that he was obsessed but insisted his con-suming passion harmed no-one and helped the natural world.
A century ago people were per-haps more tolerant of eccentricityalthough Henry did not put him-self in that category.
Trees were the centre of his lifeand had been since early childhood. As a boy he would bathe in the gen-tle caress of leaves as he climbed
trees in the woods.
Trees always came beforefamily and friends as far ashe was concerned.
Henry even worked amongthe branches. His office wasin a tree house constructedbetween the boughs of themagnificent specimen oftaxus baccata that gave YewTree Lane its name.
Here he felt more at home, away from his mildly-sym-pathetic wife and her bark-ing dogs.
Henry chanced on theseeds by accident while walk-ing in the Welsh hills com-muning with his belovedpines and oaks. They whis-pered to him in the coolbreeze wafting down fromMoel Fammau.
His trained eye spotted theseeds clustered beside a boul-
der and he immediately knewthey were different.
Scrutiny under the micro-scope showed unique featureswhich he noted down. Hecompared similar seeds intextbooks dating back to the16th century kept in therenowned Athenaeum library.
Henry felt a deep sense ofexcitement with his discov-ery and carefully planted theseeds in a compost of his owncreation.
“Now we will see you,”he murmured confidentiallyas he placed the tray on anairy shelf in his greenhouse.
The seedlings confirmedthat this was a previously un-recorded species of willowwhich he named salix blynk.
Three weeks later theseedlings disappeared. Henrymade the discovery one sun-

ny morning and was distraught.
At first he thought a profes-sional rival had stolen them butquickly realised he had told no-body.
Then, several hours later, hespotted the seedlings in a rowon the edge of a flower bed.
“Someone is playing a trickon me,” Henry muttered tohimself.
Then a bizarre series ofevents began that would occupythe botanist for many weeks –the trees moved around fromplace to place.
“It is as if they are seekingthe best ground to settle in,”he wrote in his journal.
Henry noted that the tree be-ings always went in line, as ifmarching, although he neveractually saw them moving.
This only happened in thedead of night. Sometimes aweek or two would pass with-out them shifting, as if they weretesting the ground. Then theywould be off again.
Henry noted each movemeticulously. Finally the treessettled in a neat line in a par-
ticularly lush meadow waftedby southern breezes in the leeof Lark Hill.
Henry waited for them tomove but they became literal-ly rooted to the spot.
He published his findings ex-pecting the scientific world tohail his amazing discovery.
Sadly, no-one believed him.

After a burglarentered his chil-dren’s bedroomthrough a lockedpatio door, DadDavid Dempseyquit his job andcommitted him-self full-time toinventing a devicethat would ensurethis would neverhappen again.
David, who is amechanical engineer, says that this was oneof the most terrifyingexperiences he hasever experienced.Every night aftertucking Isabelle (10)and Patrick (8) intobed, David wouldreligiously ensurethe bedroom patiodoor was locked. However, the morn-ing after the break-inas David passed thechildren’s bedroom, what he saw nextwas heart-stopping.He looked into the
bedroom and the firstthing he saw was thecurtain blowinginwards on the slid-ing patio door. Davidknew immediatelythat someone hadbroken into theroom.
“My first thoughtwas that my childrenhad been abducted”,David told the LINK,“but thankfully Isoon realised thatthey were safe andasleep. On furtherinvestigation myphone had gone frombeside my bed, withsome cash and a bagtaken from thekitchen. I did notreally care about thestolen items and justsat down andthanked God that theintruder had notharmed or abductedmy children. I dis-covered later by trialand error that it’squite easy to open alocked patio or
French door but it’sreally hard to believethat a burglar waswalking around mykids room and myown without meknowing. I could donothing to protect myfamily”.
After this terrify-ing experience Davidset himself one of hisbiggest engineeringchallenges ever - todesign a devicethat is affordable(£24.99) and pocket-sized that can physi-cally lock and alarmany kind of door orwindow without theneed for tools to fitit. After 3000 hoursDavid is happy to saythat DADi Alert isnow born (Deter AnyDangerous Intruder).DADi Alert waslaunched in Irelandin March this yearand has had a hugeresponse from themedia and radio. It isalready stocked in
over 200 shopsnationwide in Irelandand now David hasmoved to Liverpoolto launch DADiAlert.
David continued:“The device allowsanyone to use it andyou don’t need atradesman to fit it asit’s really simple toinstall. The devicewas demonstratedrecently at a PoliceExhibition in Irelandand got overwhelm-ing reviews fromtop-ranking policeofficers. DADi Alertswitches the elementof surprise from theattacker to the vic-tim, it gives the vic-tim time to react andtake action so noweveryone in societycan afford a housealarm”.

Families that Lastare encouragingprospective par-ents to consideradoption as a wayto build theirfamily.
Everyone deservesto be part of a ‘forev-er family’. Familiesthat Last finds per-
