If past encounters between SL Benfica and Celtic FC are any guide, there can only be one outcome at the Estádio da Luz on Matchday 4. Whenever these teams have met, the home team have come away with a 3-0 win and after losing by that score at Celtic Park last time out, Benfica could certainly do with the historical pattern continuing. • Celtic's triumph on 17 October came courtesy of second-half goals from Kenny Miller (56 and 66 minutes) and Stephen Pearson (90'). It was their biggest victory in a UEFA Champions League group stage game and boosted their hopes of progressing from this stage for the first time in four attempts. Five-point advantage • By overcoming Benfica, Celtic strengthened their grip on second place in Group F, moving five points clear of both their Portuguese opponents and a FC København side beaten 3-0 at group leaders Manchester United FC. • Benfica can close the gap to just two points with victory but if Celtic win and København fail to beat United in the group's other game, the Scottish champions will be assured of a place in the knockout rounds. • Before losing in Glasgow, Benfica had drawn 0-0 at København and gone down 1-0 at home to United on Matchday 2. Celtic's first two games brought a 3-2 loss at Old Trafford and 1-0 home success against København. The history • It took the toss of a coin to decide the one previous meeting of these two famous clubs in the European Champion Clubs' Cup second round in November 1969. Goals from Tommy Gemmell, Willie Wallace and Harry Hood gave Celtic a 3-0 first-leg win in Glasgow but Benfica fought back in Lisbon securing an identical result thanks to strikes from Eusébio, Jaime Graça and Diamantino. The coin toss sent Celtic through, however, and they went on to the final where they lost 2-1 to Feyenoord. • Benfica's recent visit to Glasgow brought their first match against Scottish opponents since that 1969 contest. Celtic, on the other hand, had played 13 subsequent ties against teams from Portugal – with mixed results on their travels. Their overall record in away matches against Portuguese sides reads two wins, one draw and three defeats. Win at Boavista • Celtic's most recent trip to Portugal was a memorable one as they won 1-0 at Boavista FC to book their place in the UEFA Cup final against another Portuguese team, FC Porto. Henrik Larsson scored the only goal of that semi-final second leg after 79 minutes, thus securing a 2-1 aggregate triumph. The only survivors from Celtic's 18-man party that night are Dianbobo Balde, Neil Lennon, David Marshall, Shaun Maloney and Alan Thompson. • It was at the Estádio Nacional in Lisbon in 1967 that Jock Stein's Celtic team became the first British winners of the European Cup by defeating FC Internazionale Milano 2-1. • Benfica coach Fernando Santos has met Scottish opponents once before when his former side AEK Athens FC overcame Hibernian FC in the UEFA Cup in September 2001, winning 2-0 at home and losing 3-2 away. • Celtic famously progressed past Benfica into the quarter-finals of the European Champions' Club Cup in 1969 thanksto the toss of a coin after the tie finished 3-3 on aggregate. Both legs were 3-0 home wins in pre-penalty shoot-outdays.

• The captain of the famous Lisbon Lions, Billy McNeill took up the story for uefa.com: "The Dutch referee asked meto call and I said heads. It came down heads and I thought, 'Oh ya beauty!' But then he said no, that was just for theright to call the toss, so we had to do it all over again. I called heads again and luckily it came down the right way. Iwas terrified as I don't think I had ever won the toss twice in a row before."

• Celtic's most famous victory on Portuguese soil in May 1967 when Jock Stein's side became the first British clubto lift the European Champion Clubs' Cup beating FC Internazionale Milano 2-1 at Lisbon's Estádio Nacional. McNeilland the seven surviving members of the Celtic side will make the trip to the Portuguese capital as guests of Celtic forthe match against Benfica.

• Celtic came from a goal behind to record a 2-1 away win against Kilmarnock FC and extend their lead in the ScottishPremier League to ten points. After a goalless first half, the home side opened through Colin Nish soon after therestart to spark the game to life, and Nakamura soon restored parity for Celtic with a curling free-kick. Miller thencame of the substitutes' bench to seal the points, bundling Shaun Maloney's cross over the line to give Celtic theireighth consecutive league victory.

• Miller had been rested, along with Sno as Strachan sought to rotate his side ahead of the Benfica match.Stephen Pearson and Jarošík came into the starting XI but Miller was delighted with his own contribution, saying:"We always knew it was going to be a tough game. Obviously for me personally to come off the bench and score thewinner represented a good day at the office."

• Those thoughts were echoed by Strachan. "We had a problem in the first half because of Kilmarnock's energy andthey surprised us a wee bit," he said. "But the spirit, ability and passing improved in the second half and the betterplayers shone."

• Thomas Gravesen (hamstring) and Vennegoor of Hesselink (ankle) were also missing on Sunday through injuryproblems that had kept them out of the first meeting against Benfica.

• Celtic followed up the defeat of Benfica with a 2-1 victory against Motherwell FC on 21 October. The home side wentahead just past the quarter-hour when Maciej Żurawski's shot was deflected into his own net by Motherwell's StephenCraigan. Żurawski then added a second midway through the second period after connecting with Nakamura's pass.Scott McDonald pulled one back but Celtic held on.

• The team was unchanged from midweek as full-backs Lee Naylor and Paul Telfer recovered from slight injuries.

• Strachan said: "We had good periods, but they were good and what we didn't need after two hard games was aside that were up for it physically and mentally. What we have done this week has been a fantastic achievement."

• Dianbobe Balde has appeared just once for the first team this season after recovering from a stomach muscle injurybut is biding his time. "Playing now is not my main focus because I have to get my fitness back and I'm worrying aboutnothing else," said the 31-year-old.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell said: "Sectarianbehaviour has all but been eradicated from Celtic Park. Our problems centre away from home where a small proportionembarrass us with their chants and that is unacceptable."

• Celtic and Rangers' fine European results this season have impressed Scotland manager Walter Smith. "I was atCeltic Park for the Benfica game and watched Rangers on television and both clubs played exceptionally well," hesaid. "It is good they can have success at a very high level. Although we still have a number of foreign players in eachteam, the Scottish players who played all acquitted themselves well."

• Celtic supporters will pay tribute to former Benfica player Miklós Fehér on Wednesday by unfurling an eight-metrelong banner at the Estádio da Luz bearing the message 'You'll Never Walk Alone' which will then be handed over tothe home support. Past masters: Four clubs competing in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League were involved in the competition whenit started during the 1992/93 season. AC Milan were beaten finalists (losing to Olympique de Marseille), while PSVEindhoven, PFC CSKA Moskva and FC Porto all participated in the group stage. In addition, AEK Athens FC and FCBarcelona were knocked out in the second round, the last hurdle before the group stage.

Long road for debutants: Five clubs have advanced to the group stage from the European Champion Clubs' Cupsecond qualifying round including this season's two debutants, F.C. København and PFC Levski Sofia. They arejoined by FC Spartak Moskva, FC Dynamo Kyiv and FC Steaua Bucuresti as clubs who had to play four matches toclaim their place in the group stage of the competition. A debutant has not won the competition since Juventus in1995/96, the Italian side becoming the third club to achieve this following Olympique de Marseille (1992/93, first UEFAChampions League final) and AFC Ajax (1994/95).

No qualifiers: Of the 32 clubs involved in the group stage, only AS Roma and FC Girondins de Bordeaux have yetto play a qualifying round match in order to reach the UEFA Champions League. Roma are making their fourthappearance in the competition, while Bordeaux are involved for the second time.

UEFA information

Athens finalUEFA will unveil the new visual identity created for the 2007 UEFA Champions League final at a special ceremonyfrom 11.00CET on 9 November in the Ceremonies Hall at the City Hall, Kotzia Square, Athens. The UEFA ChampionsLeague final has, in recent years, been given an identity of its own with a unique logo, a design concept and an overalltheme. The objective is to help promote the final and enhance the prestige of one of the world's biggest sportingevents. The 2007 final will be held on 23 May at the city's Olympic Spyros Louis Stadium.

FARE Action WeekThe global profile of Europe's premier club competition - the UEFA Champions League - has proved an ideal vehicleto spread the word against the evil of racism in football. Matchday 3 saw a number of anti-racist activities to supportthe Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network Action Week against racism, intolerance and discrimination.Activities included the captains of all the teams wearing Unite Against Racism armbands, while player-escort childrensported Unite Against Racism T-shirts.

In addition, announcements were made to fans in stadiums over the loudspeaker systems calling for opposition to allforms of racism, and Unite Against Racism adverts were placed in matchday programmes as well as the official UEFAChampions League magazine Champions. Supporters, players, clubs, associations, minority organisations,anti-discrimination groups, youth centres, schools and the sports media are all involved in campaigning work for theAction Week, which continued until 30 October. Participation by ethnic minorities and migrants, inclusion of womenand girls, and action against homophobia in football are all on the agenda.

UEFA staff made their on-field contribution to the Action Week last Monday with UEFA's staff side and the Geneva-basedHOPE team comprising players of various nationalities braved the pouring rain at the Colovray Stadium in Nyon,Switzerland to help spread the message that racism has no place in the game. UEFA's team ran out 7-1 winners inthe match.

Coach Educators courseSpeaking at last week's 16th UEFA Course for Coach Educators at the Italian Football Federation's (FIGC) technicalcentre in Coverciano, Andy Roxburgh, the UEFA technical director, offered a detailed overview of the proposed A-levelElite Youth Diploma for coaches, which he hopes will raise the standard of youth coaching across the continent. "Thewhole idea of this new licence is to turn today's talents into tomorrow's heroes," said Roxburgh. "Our job is to educatethe coaches because they are the ones involved in the process of turning the talents into heroes."

Marcello Lippi, who led Juventus to the 1996 UEFA Champions League, was a star attraction at the course and in aquestion-and-answer session, he recalled taking his first steps in coaching with the UC Sampdoria youth team in the1970s. "Coaching young people is a mission – at least that is how I felt about it and that's what I want to say toeducators who coach young people. After three years as a youth coach, I realised it was not what I wanted in the longterm. But coaching youngsters should not be viewed as a stop-gap."

UEFA donationsUEFA is to donate CHF2.2m (€1.38m) to its four major Social Responsibility partners for the 2006/07 campaign. Theamount was approved by UEFA's Executive Committee at its recent meeting in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The donations -to be paid out of money raised from fines imposed by the UEFA disciplinary authorities on clubs, players and nationalteams in the 2005/06 season - are being made to the Special Olympics Europe/Eurasia (SOEE) body, the InternationalCommittee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network, and the Danish CrossCultures Project Association (CCPA).

Head coach profiles

Fernando SantosDate of birth: 10 October 1954Nationality: PortuguesePlaying career: SL Benfica, CS Marítimo, GD Estoril PraiaCoaching career: GD Estoril-Praia, CF Estrela da Amadora, FC Porto, AEK Athens FC (twice), Panathinaikos FC,Sporting Clube de Portugal, SL Benfica

Fernando Santos completed a huge loop when he returned to SL Benfica as a coach in 2006, some 34 years afterstarting his playing days with the club. His career as a player was a modest success, never really making the gradeat the Estádio da Luz and instead turning out in the lower divisions for CS Marítimo and GD Estoril Praia. But followingsuccessful spells as coach of FC Porto and AEK Athens FC, he is hoping to make a bigger impression at Benfica thistime around.

He started off well, guiding them past FK Austria Wien and into the UEFA Champions League group stage in his firstcompetitive games as coach having taken over at the helm during summer 2006. He arrived after spending two yearsat AEK Athens FC and the journey between Greece and Portugal is becoming a familiar one for Fernando Santos.Having started out at Estoril, it was with Estrela da Amadora that he caught the eye, helping them a remarkableseventh-place league finish in 1997/98.

The achievement attracted the attentions of FC Porto, whom he led to a fifth successive title in 1998/99, but the coachcould not repeat the feat and back-to-back Portuguese Cup wins did not sate the appetite of a expectant fans soFernando Santos departed in summer 2001, joining AEK. More silverware came, in the form of the Greek Cup, andafter spending the 2002/03 season at Panathinaikos FC he moved to Sporting Clube de Portugal. It proved adisappointment, however, and he returned to AEK 12 months later before rejoining Benfica in May 2006.

Gordon StrachanDate of birth: 9 February 1957Playing carer: Dundee FC, Aberdeen FC, Manchester United FC, Leeds United AFC, Coventry City FCCoaching career: Coventry City FC, Southampton FC, Celtic FC.

An energetic and talented midfielder who was capped 50 times by Scotland and helped Aberdeen FC to win the UEFACup Winners' Cup under Sir Alex Ferguson, Gordon Strachan began in management while still a player at Englishtop-flight club Coventry City FC in November 1996.

He helped Coventry avoid relegation and then ended his on-field career aged 40 to concentrate on coaching, keepingthe club in the Premiership until 2001. Strachan was sacked early in the following season but was swiftly appointedat Southampton FC - who he again kept in the top division against the odds. In 2002/03 he took them to eighth placein the Premiership and the FA Cup final, losing 1-0 to Arsenal FC but earning a UEFA Cup berth. Strachan announcedearly the next season that he would step down at the end of the campaign for personal reasons and left his role inMarch 2004 to concentrate on media work.

Always a man in demand due to his tactical astuteness and motivational skills, in summer 2005 Strachan was giventhe tough task of succeeding Martin O'Neill at Celtic FC. Strachan's reign began with a disastrous 5-0 loss at FCArtmedia in the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round first leg, and a 4-0 win in the return could notsalvage their European campaign. But Celtic regrouped and won the Scottish Premier League in record time and alsolifted the Scottish League Cup.

Referee

UEFAUCLDoBNat.Name452901.02.1966GREKyros Vassaras

Kyros Vassaras is one of Europe's leading officials as shown by his five appointments in the 2005/06 UEFA ChampionsLeague including the quarter-final second-leg meeting of Villarreal CF and FC Internazionale Milano. He also enjoyeda particularly fine summer in 2004 when he was one of the fourth officials for UEFA EURO 2004™ in Portugal, beforetaking charge, on home soil, of the Olympic Football Tournament final between Argentina and Paraguay in Athens.

The travel agent from Thessalonikj initially started refereeing in 1984, eleven years before his first top-flight match inGreece. "My father Antonios was a FIFA referee," Vassaras said. "I watched him from a very young age. He told methat I should start refereeing as early as possible, as this would give me the chance to take part in major competitionsif I was good enough. But he was tough with me – he encouraged me, but he would have told me to stop if he hadthought that I wasn't going to make a career out of it. After two years, he told me that I was on the right road, and hegave me every help from then on."

He was awarded his FIFA international badge in 1998 and has since been involved in the 1998 UEFA EuropeanUnder-16 Championship, the 1999 FIFA U-17 World Championship, in which he took charge of the final betweenBrazil and Australia, and the 2002 World Cup finals, in addition to serving as a fourth official at UEFA EURO 2000™.His most high-profile club fixture to date was the 2004/05 UEFA Champions League semi-final between AC Milanand PSV Eindhoven. Vassaras, who is a water sports enthusiast, has also made a real positive impact on the Greekgame and is regularly handed the big matches in his homeland.

Competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA clubcompetitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2006/07, at least four places on this list willbe reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubsfrom within the same association of the said club.

The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the clubfor two seasons. In 2007/08, the number of locally-trained players in a squad will increase to six before rising to eightin 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the clubbetween the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at leastthree seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubsfrom simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given agreater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as aconsequence.

• Financial information: UEFA says the estimated budgeted income for the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League is€750m – higher than the 2005/06 campaign revenue which amounted to CHF943m (approx. €610m).

Under the competition regulations, 75 per cent of the total revenue received from television and commercial contractsconcluded by UEFA, up to a maximum of €530m will go to the 32 clubs taking part in the group stage of Europe'spremier club competition. The remaining 25 per cent is earmarked for European football and remains with UEFA tocover organisational and administrative costs, as well as for solidarity payments to associations, clubs and leagues.

It is also stipulated that participating clubs will receive 82 per cent of any revenue received from the same stream inexcess of € 530m, with the remaining 18 per cent allocated to UEFA for European football. In addition, 50 per centof the revenue received from new media contracts concluded by UEFA will also be available for distribution to theclubs, and the remaining 50 per cent will be allocated to the above-mentioned European football portion/quota.

The gross income for 2006/07 is estimated at €750m, and according to projections, will be made up of € 743.3m fromTV and commercial contracts and €6.7m from new media contracts.

The fixed amount to the clubs is €276.6m. Each of the 32 clubs in the group stage will receive a starting bonus of€2m. In addition, they will receive a match bonus of €400,000 per match. Performance bonuses will amount to €600,000for a win and €300,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive€2.2m, the eight quarter-finalists €2.5m each and the four semi-finalists €3m each. The UEFA Champions Leaguewinners will receive €7m, and the runners-up €4m.

This means that a total minimum amount of €4.4m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive,at best, up to €22.7m, not counting the market pool share and gate receipts.

The remaining €270.4m will be distributed according to the proportional value of each TV market represented by theclubs taking part in the UEFA Champions League, and to be split among the number of teams – four, three, two orone – participating from a given association.
