In the past couple of months, #TeamSKYGirls launched in Gabz City and Ghetto. Thank all o’ you babes for coming

out! :D We had so much fun- if you were there, you’ll def remember that Boity came through and shared her SKY

with the GC massive. Zeus and Samantha Mogwe also performed, and then took their dopeness ko Ghetto, where

Euri also came through and gave a killa performance. Zizi Panther, Mandi and Warona (#TeamTheSundaySky) also

came through; it was epic:) Check out the pics in this edition of #SKYmag #ForFabulousTeensOnly!

Hello, ladiiiiies:) Welcome to the

second edition of #SKYMag! <3

It ’s all about you- your shout- outs,

your SKY, and the people who inspire you!

We were excited that so many of you came through and took

the pledge, and shared dilo tse le leng sure ka tsone and

shapo ka tsone. So many of you are sure ka things like dancing,

fashion, music and modelling… Ba bangwe ba lona le shapo

ka gossiping and difake friends *nods head*. That’s why this

issue is about you and dichomi tsa ga go- you told us why you

love them so much, and why you got each other’s backs like a

t-shirt. Even though they might have a different SKY, they help

us to stay true to ourselves, and we all gotta encourage each

other… Besties? Re #SureKaBone :D

Out of everyone who pledged, hundreds and hundreds of

you said that le shapo ka smoking. We absolutely love that

you’re telling us that smoking is something that you can do

without. We wanted to find out why le rialo, that’s why we

featured a couple of besties who have decided to help each

other #StayTrue and support each other’s SKY- especially the

promise to say #ShapoKaYone to smoking.

Our cover girl is Judith Kgwadi, Miss Teen Universe Botswana,

who scooped the Second Princess title at the international

pageant in Nicaragua, earlier this year. She told us that she

managed to nail the pageant by being true to herself, even

though it has been a rollercoaster ride. Epic :)

Don’t forget to look out on our FB page, SKYGIRLSBW for the

chance to send in your poems and short stories- you could also

get the chance to see your writing in the magazine. ;)

Shout out to you guys who sent in your questions to Zeus- he

answered them for us, and you get to have a poster of the

motswakolista extraordinaire:) #BigSisterSKY hollered back at

your question about what to do when you’re crushing on a boy-

and as usual, we have the nicest street style and dopest music.

PLUS! Check our FB page, where you can take the pledge and

become a member of #TeamSKYGirls right now, and #StayTrue

to you- invite bo- gal, and SKY it up, together! We totes want

to hear from you, so share your #Sures and #Shapos with us,

and #TeamSKYGirls all over Botswana. You can also catch The

Letter to my14 year old self

Rosie Motene is a film producer, actress, voice over artist and activist, who is well known for her role in the popular South African soapie, ‘Generations’. Funny thing- she played a journalist in the soapie, and now she is the real- life presenter of Good Morning Africa, a primetime morning show on DSTV:) Rosie also manages talented artists through her agency, WAKA… She wrote a beautiful letter to her younger self, especially for you, so that you are encouraged and inspired to keep #StayingTrue! <3

Dear Rosie,You are moving towards becoming a bright and successful young woman. I know some days you are feeling lost and alone and not sure where you fit in. You wish that your mom is not so strict and that she would allow you to interact with boys and have cute boys phoning you. Be patient my dear, your time will come.

I am well aware that on some days you feel isolated; you feel that no-one understands you. I totally understand that you are having a huge identity crisis and that you are trying to find a place of peace and belonging. It may seem strange now, but it ’s this time when you will have your quiet thoughts, that will strengthen you to be able to handle life in your twenties and thirties.

Being adopted by a white a family during apartheid is a great challenge, but it ’s these difficult times and challenges that will aid you later on in life. You will grow into a woman who will have a huge community of friends from all walks of life. As you have been discriminated against so much, you will not use that form of anger and discrimination against others.

Be proud of who you are, despite what society tells you. Being black is beautiful and special, it ’s alright to embrace it. Stop trying to straighten your hair, you are simply creating more scabs on your scalp and torture for yourself.

Be proud of how you speak and don’t try and imitate your friends’ accents just to fit in. Being different is cool.

You dream everyday of becoming a great dancer who will grace the worlds’ stages. Continue to dream and believe. Many will tell you that a black South African girl will never make it on the worlds’ stages. Do not lose sight of those dreams and goals.

Spend more time with Daddy. He loves you and his time on earth is limited. When he goes, it will be tough and you will feel even more alone. Talk about your feelings, cry when you need to. Remember you had a very special place in his heart. Be nicer to your mum, you may feel resentment towards her but she has made a lot of sacrifices for you. Those you will understand at a later stage in life. Don’t forget to acknowledge your sister, Nancy. Yes, you two are different and have been brought up in two different worlds, but she is your sister and no matter what, she will always have your best interests at heart.

Rosie, please stop neglecting your studies. Education is powerful and amazing. Do not listen to those silly girls when they say that a girl should not be intelligent because it scares the boys away. Always arrive, be proud and speak up about what you know. Please stop with the crash diets, they only make you tired and bloat you. Eat healthy and stick to your dancing. And please throw the camel cigarettes away, it ’s dirty and not cool.

Rosie, my dear shine and believe in yourself and use your charm and talent to be you!

Much love,

Rosie,

SKY

If you have been following The Sunday SKY on Yarona FM, you already know the voices of Mandi and Warona, our #SKYGirl radio stars :D Check out what they had to say about the EPIC SKY Launch in Ghetto… You girls know how to party- SKY style :D

The Sunday

Mandi ;)Wow, where do I even begin?! Francistown was bigger and better than Gabs. It was totally amazing. Everything, from the girls that came, to the performances and the Sky- mobile, was on point. The Sky launch was awesome. I have to say that Sky is becoming the great movement we want it to be. I’ve gotten to meet the amazing people who actually take their time and work to make the launch incredible. Their dedication to make the launch interesting and exciting for the girls there was really heart- warming. I’ve gotten closer to Warona and I’m happy to have had her by my side through it all.

I had an astonishing time travelling to Francistown. When I first got into the bus I was really nervous, all the adults made it look like it was going to be a boring 400km ride to the Ghetto, but boy was I wrong. Like the saying, “never judge a book by its cover”, I was totally wrong. I had the most amazing time on that bus- the best bus ride of my life. All the bad jokes and the made up theories were totally awesome!

When we got to Francistown, I was really nervous. All the nerves and shivers of the earth came to one meeting point, me! I was scared about our performance for the following day and what it was going to be like. Was it going to be exciting, were the girls going to react well to the whole thing?

Now, when I think about how nervous I was, it was kind of pathetic, because it turned out well and it was marvelous. The girls were ecstatic when Zeus and Samantha performed their duo, and when the girls sang along to Eureka’s song, it was out of this world! The Sky Launch in Francistown was galactic. If Father Time and I could meet, I would go back to that weekend over and over again.

Warona :DI was more than excited to go to Francistown. On the way there, all I could think about was meeting the Ghetto SKY Girls. The trip to Francistown was extremely crazy- especially the Sky Mobile. We passed time by listening to jokes :D

Other than the jokes, the one thing that was on my mind was the dance routine that Mandipa and I were supposed to perform in front of everyone, so I was a bit scared. On the day of the launch, we spent most of the morning practicing and brainstorming. When we got to the launch, the nerves kicked in, especially since the line of SKY Girls seemed to be getting longer by the minute!

It was great seeing all the SKY Girls smiling and dancing with their friends. They looked like they were happier than I was :) The whole event was mind blowing, until Mimi called us to get ready. We were dancing soon, and the crowd grew even bigger- gee, thanks… perfect timing. We got on stage after all the screaming for Zeus, Samantha Mogwe and Euri’s AMA-ZING performances. DJ Cupid played ‘Love More’ (Chris Brown ft Nicki Minaj), and we gave a fun performance. After we got that out of the way, I noticed how happy the girls were after the event. It was really exciting to meet the Ghetto SKY Girls. I had a great time chilling with them and screaming to the lyrics of our favorite songs (nearly lost my voice).

It was also heartwarming to see all the happy faces. I hope to see more girls being true to themselves and raising the SKY flag as well as the Botswana flag up high. The most memorable moment was seeing the girls’ reaction when Zeus arrived to the event, and their reaction to all the performances.

This issue features besties, Karabo and Ndibo, who both

live in Ghetto. These BFFs met when they were in Std 6,

at Mophato Primary School. Even though they now attend

different schools, they’re still really close, and encourage

each other to stay true to their SKY :)

They are both sure ka swimming. “We really love swimming,

it’s our passion,” Karabo smiled. Another thing that the girls

have in common is that they are both shapo ka smoking.

Interestingly, this was also the thing that so many of you

listed as one of your shapos, when you took the Pledge!

We wanted to find out why these SKY_Babes ba le shapo

ka go fua, and how they encourage each other to stay away

from dilo tse ba leng shapo ka tsone. “Smoking is really a

bad habit. At school, most of our teachers tell us that if you

smoke, you have a short life to live. Your lungs suffer and

you can get lung disease. It doesn’t suit girls, really.”

“I think that girls feel pressure to smoke as a way to run

away from their problems,” Karabo thinks. According to

Karabo and Ndibo, if you feel pressured to smoke, or do

anything that you are shapo ka yone, you could always talk

to your bestie for advice and support.

Bo gal said that #SKYGirls should #StayTrue to themselves

and not do things that they don’t believe in, and they

shouldn’t pretend to be someone who they’re not. *nods

head*

Ndibo helps her friend to stay away from smoking by

advising her to hang with more healthy people, and

reminding her that “smoking ain’t good.” Its also NOT epic.

“We always talk to each other and advise each other. I

always say that she should stay true to the person that she

is and stay away from things that she isn’t sure about, and

she should strive for the things that she wants to reach for,”

said Ndibo.

Ndibo was sick, so she wasn’t able to attend the Ghetto

launch, but Karabo had her bestie’s back for days, telling

her everything and showing her photos of the event :D

Lucky them for being such epic friends!

SKY: Shapo Ka Yone/Sure Ka Yone!Everyone who has pledged to become a SKY girl has told us 3 things they love, and 3 things they can do without. It’s amazing how many things SKY girls have in common - who knew chocolate was so popular? :P At the same time we’re a unique bunch with our own quirky interests *awesome*. Here are a few of the most popular things girls love ;)

Re sure ka…

Friends ----> that’s why this

is the besties issue! Even if

you don’t have a BFF, being

a friend to many is a gift, s

o

enjoy it :)

Honesty-----> this one

came up so often, it seems

everyone likes an honest

person #StayTrue ;)

Dancing-----> we ladies just love

to dance, no wonder our launch

events were so awesome!

And a few of the things you told

us you’re shapo ka?

Re shapo ka…Smoking------> you told us that smoking is *not* cool. Luckily, you were all in agreement with this one ;)

Liars-------> liars are not in good company with SKY girls because so many of you listed honesty as something you love!

Peer pressure--------> as girls who know their SKYs, we’re sure you’ll know just what to do if

you experience this :D

Page 14: SKY Magazine Issue 2

The Amazing Spiderman 2This second instalment of the new, rebooted Spiderman films sees our fave people from the first film (Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone) joined by Jamie Foxx playing supervillain, Electro! Pharrell Williams helped write the soundtrack, too, so you *know* it’s gonna be a fun ride. Make the effort and see this at the cinema – the big screen experience won’t disappoint!

DivergentFor older SKY girls, you will *love* this film if you are sure ka the Hunger Games. Just like those fab films, this is an adaptation from a popular Young Adult book trilogy. Here at SKY we love strong female characters, and Beatrice ‘Tris’ Prior is no exception – the film finds her battling all kinds of obstacles in a futuristic Earth. You’ll be on the edge of your seat throughout ;)

Coco CaramelCoco Caramel is the 4th book in the Chocolate Box Girls series, and this one is all about the youngest of the 5 sisters, Coco. She is a determined tomboy who is #SureKaAnimals! When her horse, Caramel, is sold to a new owner, Coco makes it her mission to make sure Caramel is being cared for – but what will she find out? And will a new acquaintance turn out to be a bestie or an enemy?...

The author is an agony aunt for a teen-girl magazine, “Shout,” so she’s clued up on issues facing girls like you. This story will keep you hooked from beginning to end!

Sleuth on SkatesThis book introduces us to the brilliant Sesame Seade, a young detective. Along with her purple rollerskates, a friendly duck, and her best friends, Toby and Gemma, Sesame makes it her mission to get to the bottom of a ballerina’s mysterious disappearance…

The artwork is awesome, and as the plot twists and turns you will find yourself LOLing throughout, *big time*. We can’t wait to read more about Sesame Seade, our new favourite heroine!

of Botswana. She really is a big sister (her

younger sister is your age ;) ) and so she’s a

pro at giving advice about all kinds of hectic

stuff. She’s super quirky and loves socialising,

reading and women and girls’ issues- she’s our

epic supa-dope-advice-giver ;) <3

Hey, #TeamSKYGirls :) When we asked you to tell us what

you would ask your older sister, if you had an issue that

needed #SKY advice, a lot of you asked us about *drum

roll* yep- boys! SO… #BigSisterSKY answered one of your

questions about boys, and we hope her advice will help

lots of you SKY Girls stay true to yourselves when it comes

to thinking about your crushes. <3 <3

There are few things more exciting in a young woman’s

life than developing a crush on someone. It’s an incredible

time, fraught with beautiful expectations; all the sickly

sweet ‘melt in your mouth’ feelings you hear about hit you

with a startling ferocity. Even an unrequited crush can

add a burst of colour to your life with every minute spent

swooning in the romance of it all :)

There’s a constant pressure for girls to change themselves

in order to be more attractive to the boy they like. You

might find yourself trying to one-up every girl around him.

There’s a sort of paranoia that sets in; the need to seem

‘perfect’, and there isn’t anything good that can come out

of that *shakes head*.

Anybody that doesn’t like the real you doesn’t deserve

you, and nothing is more attractive on a woman than

self-assuredness! People will always gravitate towards

you if you’re giving out a confident and convicted aura, so

#StayTrue to your SKY!

The most important part of a relationship is knowing when

to compromise and when to stick to your guns. Do not

leave your spirit in ruin doing whatever it takes to keep a

boy. Be introspective, get to know every part of yourself,

know your SKY, and when to say ‘ke shapo ka yone’.

It’s always a good idea to have your friends get along

with your significant other. Get involved with each other’s

hobbies, if you want, or take up a new one together. It’s

a great way to show your dedication to each other. The

possibilities are infinite, so go ahead and reach for the

SKY :) xoxo

Is it fine to keep holding on to a guy

whose ex- girlfriend is harassing me just

because she wants the guy back? I love

him very much and I don’t wish 2 lose

him, but ga ke kgone go lwantshana le

ngwanyana, it’s only that I wasn’t raised

that way gore ke lwele monna. Please

help, Big Sister!

First and foremost I just want to say it’s

great that you’ve been raised as a young

woman who isn’t interested in conflict,

especially with other women!

Unfortunately, women have been

conditioned to see each other as

competition; we are often jealous of

each other and act catty towards each

other in a bid to get approval from men. I

strongly feel like solidarity and friendship

between women is important for our

collective empowerment and I wish I

could see more women aligned with this

idea.

She’s probably lashing out because

she’s hurt about the situation. You

already know that she’s still in love with

your boyfriend, and she’s just taking

out her frustrations on you. I’d definitely

encourage you to reach out to her in a

very calm and collected manner; talk

about it as compassionately as possible,

and give her more clarity on your stance.

You are not the enemy here, and what

happened between them has nothing to

do with you. Do not at any given moment

think about reciprocating when she

harasses you, as difficult as it will be.

This is a great resource for you to learn

patience and empathy and make yourself

a better person :)

You also need to talk to your boyfriend about

it. He has to affirm his relationship with you

to her. He also has to be completely honest

with you about his current status with her;

if there’s any chance he’s still leading her

on it could be the reason for her ill feelings

towards you.

Otherwise, the two of them should talk it out

to get closure on their situation (if there isn’t

any) and completely move on. Should none

of this quieten the storm, the last resort is to

ignore her completely. There isn’t any reason

that having tried your best to solve the

situation, you should suffer at the hands of

someone being malicious. If you have to go

as far as blocking her on social networks or

avoiding her in public, so be it. It isn’t worth

losing a relationship that you’re content

with and a partner that you love. There is

no virtue in sacrificing yourself for someone

who does not deserve it. Your happiness

matters as much as anybody else’s. Good

luck and I hope everything turns out well!

xoxo

Hey, SKY Girls :) Y’all know that

Zeus is a homegrown musical

powerhouse. He has been rapping

for years and has won numerous

international awards for his songs

and videos. ZEus

Lingani Linken Malikongwa

What’s your perspective on up- coming artists in BW and

the music/entertainment industry?

Zeus said: Botswana is not an easy place to grow up and

develop in. There isn’t really a lot of support or structures in

place for artists… Despite that, you see a lot of individuals who

I think are very talented and define the arts over and over

again.

One of the problems with all of the beautiful talent that I see

out there is that people aren’t willing to do the groundwork.

They’re not willing to get their hands dirty and go through the

trenches. They don’t want to get into the opening slots and

the rough slots and get booed off stage- all the stuff that you

really need to go through.

Boikhutso Ladybee Mashonja Wht keeps him goin to ensure

dat he is on point everytm h release a project or single?

Zeus said: I just want to do better. People come to me

and shower me with all this praise, and it’s humbling and

encouraging to create, knowing that I have that kind of

support. At the same time, I know I have room for growth and

I want to push myself further and do better than last time. I

know that there are so many shades and colours to life that

I want to paint all those things. I know for a fact that I’ll never

be able to but I think that life should be about us pushing

ourselves and each other to find more colours, and make

new colours. I think that if we look at it that way, our goals

become so much different and we go beyond ourselves and

we connect with people in a way that transcends. Yes, I wanna

get paid, yes, I want to be secure and happy and innovate, but

it’s about so much more than that.

He rocked out with #TeamSKYGirls in Gabs and

Ghetto, getting y’all to bounce to his epic new track,

‘Touch the SKY’, which is all about being true to

yourself and standing by your choices. He told us

that the song was inspired by his niece, who is also

a teenage girl :) “To see her get excited about the

event… has been quite cool - I even got some insights

from her when I was working on the song. I spoke to

her a lot as I was writing, finding out about her fears,

ambitions and challenges.” He also told us how great

it was to connect with the SKY girls through hanging

out with us and supporting us - and it’s also brought

him closer to his niece :D

He said, “…I am a supporter of anything that supports

young people and helps them to affirm their sense of

self… As I’ve been involved with the SKY movement,

I’ve learned so much about the girls, and myself…”

Zeus said that the most important, wise thing that

SKY girls will hear, is “be true to yourself” and that we

might not even realise what that means until we are in

that situation and the world challenges us to conform

to something that isn’t in line with our SKY <3

He also said that supporting #TeamSKYGirls has been

an awesome experience. So, he digged performing

for you as much as you liked listening to him! *Yay*

If you were the president or a person of high

status, how would you uplift the industry so it can

get to the status quo of international standards?

Zeus said: In developed nations, you’ll find that

private industry moves things. In developing

countries, it’s the opposite: government is the big

spender and player. So with that in mind, I would like

government to start operating like a business. Not

to say that there aren’t any socialist or communal

values that are important, but we miss the mark so

much with our leadership. I feel like people think

that government is this infinite resource, and it’s not.

It’s finite.

I would like us to become efficient and innovative…

We need to stop celebrating mediocrity… in terms of

being more specific to the industry, we don’t have

development programmes. We do little things that

are great press opportunities but we don’t really do

anything strategic and sustainable that will have an

impact on development.

If you go and ask our leadership what they’re doing

for the industry, there’ll probably be things like the

President’s Day Awards- great, cool. I appreciate the

gesture and what it means, but in terms of long term

development of the industry, it misses the mark.

It doesn’t do anything to empower the artists to

sustain themselves after the fact.

I’d want us to focus on strategic programmes that

are managed well and that are consultative, top

down and are based on the needs of the people

that need them. In that way, it will be impactful at

grass- roots level. Like I said, photo ops are not

something that is sustainable or that will empower

artists. Government is not supposed to be the

saviour, they are supposed to be the enabler.

Tell us more about his self- owned company... D.I.Y

Zeus said: D.I.Y., like the name says, was me wanting to see

professionalism in the entertainment space. I wanted to see a

certain decorum that I felt wasn’t there. I studied business and

commerce at university, and every time the example was 3M

or some other company, my interests were Def Jam and Sony

and EA Sports, and those kinds of businesses. As you can tell,

those are businesses that are based on passion, innovation

and youthful energy. That’s what I wanted to see and build. It’s

not a record label; it’s an entertainment company, providing

entertainment solutions in the shape and form that we are

able to. We’ve done event management and many of those

events were concepts that we developed from the beginning.

It is about coming up with a solution for a particular event,

innovating and dreaming.

D.I.Y. stands for ‘do it yourself’ and it’s an attitude. That’s what

the brand stands for. It is about you leading by example. If

you want something done, do it yourself. I have a lot of big

dreams for it and I see a need for it. Botswana is full of young,

passionate dreamers and creatives who don’t have a space.

D.I.Y. Entertainment does a lot of events and activations and

the Zeus brand is managed under it, locally. We do have SA

partners. The D.I.Y. Organisation is a society, the non-profit

that is very social marketing driven, but there is still very little

difference between these spaces. If you speak about youth,

there is an entertainment component where we can use our

strengths.

THE Pote or Foam

You see, because we can do what we want in the name of music and

pop culture, I decided that we’ll check out singles that are tearing up

since singles stay flowing, owning radio playlists and charts, let’s have

Dramaboi -Candy

The township kid has come back with

another banger! This dude makes hits like

he orders them from a Chinese shop. I must

say, radio has really shown appreciation and

respect for this mreppa. The song has his

signature beats that compliment his vocals

and lyrical flow. Of course, he showed the

beat it’s not to be played with! You dance to

this beat; your soul moves to the beat…

One Direction–Midnight Memories

One Direction has led in the pop

world since their formation and their

following has grown in a huge way

over the years. They promised a funky,

rock- infused beat whenever they

talked about this record, and voila,

that’s exactly what they gave us! The

beat is eccentric, giving u a feeling of

freedom to express yourself with so

much guitar in there. So there you go,

the rebel is impressed!

Katy Perry ft. JuicyJ – Dark Horse

Combining pop and trap music gives you

an insane, pote and heavy beat. Taken from

her album, ‘Prism’, the single was produced

by Max Martin and Dr. Luke. The song was

co-written by Katie and J. Dude, this track

is beast. It has that whole new Southern

rap-techno mashup vibe, is definitely for the

party. You will feel super good and immortal

listening to this song. Also, the video IS

INSAAAAAAAAAANE!

Daughtry – Waiting for Superman

Taken from his album, ‘Baptised’, this

one has a more electro- pop feel to it. It

was bound to make some heavy noise,

and ladies drop dead at Daughtry’s feet

anyway...lol. Chris’s voice stays winning

and his song writing skills will always win

him awards. I think this was definitely a

worthy come back and Daughtry never

disappoints- even if you prayed all night

hoping they would- pssh, forget it.

So, some peeps are pretty much like me: very opinionated and analytical when it comes to music videos ;) I just had to ask them what’s hot right now- you know, there’s always that music video you watch on a daily, every chance you get, you in hard on some izvaar...e ke sure ka yone :)

Dr Music says:My guy, it’s simple,

there’s always someone

who takes care of music

in every radio station.

Set up an appointment

with them and they will

happily provide you with

that information and

advice. Don’t be fra bro,

Hi, Mr. Rebel. I feel I don’t

have taste in music. My

friends always laugh

at me because of my

choice of music and that

embarrasses me. What

can I do, what do you

suggest?

Refika Ref’Kat

Dr Music says:First of all, you have the

coolest name, there is

no way you can’t have

the flyest style in choice

of music. Your choice in

music is your choice and

no one should ever have

to judge you for it. If they

don’t like it fine, but for as

long as the music makes

you feel good, confident

and dance, then don’t

bother with anything you

don’t like, so rock on.

Even though being a beauty queen is about the pretty dresses and crowns, it is also about who you are as a young woman; how you remain grounded and what you do to stay true to your SKY. Judith shared a little bit about who she is, when all the lights are turned off, and she puts aside her crown. After all, she’s a regular girl- just like you. Read on, you’ll see what we mean! Who is Judith? Where are you from, where do you live?

My name is Judith One Kgwadi, and I am 19 years of age. I come from Mookane and

I live with my mom and my sister.

What inspired you to enter Miss Teen Universe?

A lot, hey; I knew that I had a lot of potential in this modelling industry, so

that’s what drove me to join the pageant

How did it feel when you won the crown?Oh, my gosh, it was amazing! I actually felt

relieved. I was nervous but by the end of the time, when I was crowned, I was happy

that I nailed it :) I would like to mention that it was a great achievement for me,

because I was the only one representing Africa.

What are some of the things that you care about?

Right now- even before I went to Nicaragua- I started a project, working with disabled

children, hoping to motivate them. I often go to schools to motivate them and tell them

the importance of school. It has been a great rollercoaster ride. I would like to think I am a role model to other teenagers and I’ve inspired myself to go far with this talent that

I have.

One of the #SKYGirls on our page wanted to know: what did you do to move from

being a model to becoming a beauty queen?

I would say that it’s all about strategy. Everyone should have a strategy when she

is on the platform. What I actually did was to be myself. I was also not nervous about

things, and I was focussed about what I wanted to do. I have always wanted to join

these pageants, so this was a great opportunity to nail it.

skygirlsbw

Log on to FB and tell us

who you want to see featured in

the next issue of #SKYMag! :D

Do you feel like there is a difference between when you are just at home and when you are in your crown?Mhmm. Exactly! I do chores like any other girl would do- it’s not like I’m that beauty queen when I’m at home! Nah- it depends. When it’s time for me to go out there with my title, I’m formal. But when I’m with my friends, I’m just easy chilling. So it differs.

Do you have a bestie?Yes, I do! Her name is Itumeleng Raseleka :D

What do you do when you’re with your friends? We go to movies, sometimes, maybe go to parties- just girls stuff!

Have you ever been pressured to do something that is not your SKY, like if you are with friends, or out at a party? You know something? There is one thing I believe in- there is no such thing as peer pressure. Because it depends. If someone is smoking and drinking, they cannot force you to do the same thing. If you don’t want to, you don’t want to, and you should stand by your decision. So no - I would never feel obliged to do something like start smoking.

Do you think that it would change the judge’s impression of you if they knew that you smoked?Mhmm! Definitely. Because the title that I am holding is for Miss Teen Universe, and it is not advisable for a teen to be smoking, drinking alcohol or using other substances. When I joined this pageant they briefed us about it.

A best friend is that one person who is always on your side, even when you are losing. A mere friend will visit you in the hospital with flowers and a get well soon' card- how thoughtful :)

But your best friend is the one that will come and utter words like 'Girl you best get better soon! Seriously, I hate going to the mall alone. There is no fun in partying when you ain't there! ' ' These words are not entirely thoughtfulº

But guess what- it's just typical of your best friend... We love them still. We all have that best friend who calls you 2 hours before a party and strongly warns you not to wear your' dress because she is definitely wearing it. Oh dear! I always say: friends are God s way of taking care of us!

My life would definitely be a total bore without my best friends. I sometimes hate it when we argue, knowing for a fact it won't get us anywhere.

My Best friend always says, 'PROMISE ME THAT WHEN I'M DEAD YOU WON'T CRY NEAR MY CASKET, BECAUSE I WON'T BE ABLE TO WIPE AWAY YOUR TEARS LIKE I USUALLY DO! ' ' I am not sure if I can keep that promise. My friends help me embrace my awesomeness.

A best friend is simply the best thing that could happen to a girl. A best friend will never get in your way, unless you on your way down!

• Shopping: sometimes, when we’re going through a hard time, us girls like to go shopping *raises hand*. Mme hela, this isn’t such a good idea- for your stress, or your wallet! ‘Retail therapy’ only makes you feel better for a short time, but your pocket money will be gone forever, which might make you more stressed out :/

• Smoking: smokers claim that smoking calms them down, but psychologists say that it’s actually the opposite :O Cigarettes contain the stimulant, nicotine. Nicotine actually increases anxiety and tension, which is the opposite of stress relief. Yeah. Nna re shapo ka smoking…

• Comforteating: So, gals… many of you mentioned that you eat junk food to relieve your stress (yeah, them hot wings are cool), but - it doesn’t make the stress go away… You might actually end up feeling a little guilty about it!

Whether you whip it back and forth

like Willow Smith or wear it ‘just so’,

cornrowing your crowning glory, there’s

no denying that our hair is one of the

most important and fun accessories that

we have when it comes to our look :) And

- healthy hair is always SKY!

Weave

A weave is an artificial hairpiece that is either

sewn or glued into your own hair. Weaves can be

short, long, expose some of your hair or cover

it up completely. Even though o tsentse piece,

you shouldn’t forget to look after you own hair,

underneath - after all, the weave comes out, right?

Tips:

1. Don’t forget to wash your hair! You can have a

weave in for up to six weeks, so making sure

that your scalp is clean is a must!

2. Moisturise! You should moisturise your real

hair. Get underneath the weave and apply the

product straight onto your scalp. :)

3. Style it - it’s your hair; you bought it, right? And

have fun :D

Braids

Di- braids are a great way to keep your hair

protected, while allowing you to have styling

versatility. You can have box braids or micro

braids, Senegalese twists or kinky extensions. Do

you ;)

Tips:

1. Before you get your hair plaited, make sure

that your hair is clean, has been conditioned

and is in a healthy state. Damaged hair breaks

easily - not SKY!

2. After washing your hair, run a little oil along

the length of the braid to lock in moisture :)

3. Make sure that you know your hair - if it breaks

easily, maybe micro braids aren’t for you; try

medium width or box braids instead.

AfroThe afro is a gorgeous hairstyle :) It is all about

letting your hair be its own beautiful, kinky,

coiling self! There are a lot of misconceptions and

assumptions that people make about afro hair…

S’ka wa wara; skeem- SKY gotchu ;)

Tips:

1. LOVE YOUR HAIR! Even though the hair

dresser or your cousin, or your bestie’s sister’s

friend will tell you go re moriri o Setswana o

thata- brush it off. All you need to do is keep

your hair moisturised and be GENTLE with it!

2. Invest in a wide- toothed comb. After your ‘fro

gets longer than 5 cm, an afro comb will break

it at the ends and it will seem like it never

grows. Strange, right? Because curly hair is

so- well- curly, it tangles easily and if enough

pressure is put on it, it also breaks easily.

Combing gently, untangling the ends first, and

then moving to the roots ;)

3. Curly hair loses moisture easily so it’s

important to make sure that you keep it soft.

Conditioners and hot oil treatments are your

afro’s friend- condition after every wash, and

hot oil it every two weeks :)

Dreads

Dreads are awesome :) They are a great way to

keep natural hair that expresses beauty and

originality! Dreads come in all shapes and starting

methods; some hair locks on its own; they can be

thick, thin, dyed, twisted or crocheted…

1. Be patient :) Hair takes time to lock. Try not

to play with it too much; when your locks are

still new, playing with them might delay the

locking process.

2. MOISTURISE! :D Just because ke di-locks

doesn’t mean o ka di tlogela hela, gal. Locks

need love!

3. Keep them clean. You can wash dreads as

regularly as they need to be. For some people,

it’s every week, and for others, it’s once a

month. Do what feels right for YOUR hair <3

way they handled the situation (5 points)2. Give her a hug- that’s yo girl (1 point)3. Try to understand why they did what they did (3 points)

Closer than close (0- 8 points)You, gal, are one of those besties who’s there for your friend whether or not things are going your way. You tend to speak when you’re feeling calm, instead of upset, which is cool… Sometimes you are a little sensitive, but you are also quick to forgive. Keep at it- a good friend is more valuable than gold <3

That’s Whassup, Gal (9- 17 points)You love hanging out, sharing intimate moments with your girls, bonding. Good on you! You’re also one of those girls that enjoys space, so you never ‘suffocate’ your friends. You value time apart as much as time together. You’re true to your SKY and know how to let your girls be, too! Awesomeness.

Girls for Keeps (18- 25)When your friends need you, you willingly give them a shoulder to cry on, but you are also quite vocal about what you don’t like. You make friends easily and are never shy about saying what’s on your mind. Good one, gal, everyone needs an honest friend! <3

Quiz

Because this issue is all about besties, we thought that it might be a good idea to find out what kind of friend you are… We all have a dif-ferent #SKY, each of us being supportive in the best way we know how. So, #Sky_Babe, how do you express your love for your friends? Take our test and find out :D

Aquarius: Jan 20 - Feb 18Hey, SKY babe :) Did someone say, ‘temptation’? This month might be a little challenging, for you- especially when it comes to how you spend your money. You might be swayed between spending all of your pocket money on a pair of new shoes or saving for the new cell phone you wanted. Remember, before you make any decisions, take a breath and remind yourself of your SKY ;)

Libra: Sept 22 - Oct 23Hey, gal. You may feel a little sensitive, this next few weeks… But o s’ka wa wara: take a little time to pamper yourself. What are the things tse o leng sure ka tsone? Do those to lift your spirits and ground you in your SKY. O zo ba grand <3

Taurus: Apr 20 - May 20This is the time when you will have a span of positive experiences! You’ll become much closer to your bestie, fight less with your little brother or sister- and even have a heart to heart with your auntie… You’re getting quite a bit of attention, this month, and might excel at your favourite sport or get a part you audition for in a play. SKY’s the limit!

Capricorn: Dec 22 - Jan 19Little Miss Sunshine! You are full of good cheer and positivity. Good for you! You might end up taking a few trips to visit friends and spread your happiness around. It is also quite a busy time for you at school- which you will handle with #TeamSKYGirls swagger. Awesome :) <3

Gemini: May 21 - Jun 20 What’s in store for you, this month? Awesomeness. You’re in a chatty mood for a lot of the month, and might find yourself making new friends and having mad LOL moments with your besties. You might feel particularly outgoing and try a sport or a hobby you’ve never tried before… Go ‘head, gal- define your SKY :)

Cancer: Jun - Jul 22Yo, Cancer ;) You might have had a chill couple of months, being easy- going and relaxing as often as you could. Well, in the next couple of months, that laid- back attitude will be shaken up quite a bit! You might find yourself in a leadership position; captain of the chess team or the girl your besties look to for advice. Remember to rely on your SKY for tough decisions- knowing yourself? #SureKaYone

Scorpio: Oct 24 - Nov 21Woah, gal. You might find that you’re faced with some big decisions, over the next couple of months. Whether it’s at school, about your crush, or where to hang with your besties, if you take some time out to BREATHE you will get through it. Don’t worry too much, though- staying true your SKY will guarantee that you come out aces ;) <3

Leo: Jul 23 - Aug 22Sometimes, Leo, things don’t go according to plan… Once in a while, things happen that are out of your control. That might be the case for you for a little while. Instead of bearing your teeth and GROWLING, take a step back, breathe and THEN react :) Also, remember the things that you can control, like knowing and declaring your SKY. Whew! There is hope for you, yet! <3

Virgo: Aug 23 - Sept 21This next few weeks will be a bit of a rollercoaster, Virgo :) You will probably get a whole lot more attention than you are used to getting- which is a great chance to step out of your comfort zone! Socialising with new people can be interesting and enriching; you get to share your SKY and learn someone else’s. Awesome!

Sagittarius: Nov 22 - Dec 21So, Sag’ :) Wena o na le the chance to shine in your family, this next few weeks. If you have been disagreeing with the parents, or fighting with your siblings, expect a sweet make- up period. Good vibes will be flying free on the home front. Family group hug? Sure ka yone ;)

Pisces: Feb 19 - Mar 20You’re thinking quite deeply, this next few weeks, making sure that you’re living up to your ‘sures’ and ‘shapos’. Earlier this year you might have taken the Pledge… this is the moment when you look back and see how you #StayedTrue. Don’t worry if you feel like you’ve fallen a little short- if you want to live your SKY more diligently, there is no better time than NOW! :D

Aries: Mar 21 - Apr 19You might feel as though you’re under a bit of pressure, this month, Sky Babe. Maybe you’ll be at a party and someone might offer you a cigarette. Don’t be shy to declare your SKY! Cigarette? Nah, man; ke shapo ka yone. Take a walk with your bestie, or alone, if you need the space! And don’t feel bad about being true to yourself- you gotta love you, baybay!
