Welcome to

the Norwegian Summer Town

Skudeneshavn

The Old Woodenhouse SettlementSmall - white and beautiful.

It is quite charming to saunter amidst white picket fences, gnarled trees, and winding narrow roads to the accompaniment of shrieking gulls and puffing boats.

The old part of town consists of 130 homes and maritime storehouses from the early 1800s and is so well taken care of that it earned a rating by NORTRA as "Norway's Second-Best Preserved Small City".

It is as if time has stopped when you stroll along narrow søragadå. Perhaps you will meet the old legend Captain Worse in "The World’s Smallest Cafe" or outside The Foghorn Factory on his way to Majorstuen?

The Museum in Mælandsgården lets you experience Skudeneshavn's history through an authentic presentation of daily life from the 1800s.

Activities

Skudenes School and Recreation Park is famous all over Norway as an Eldorado for active children who seek challenge from what the creator of the park calls "Real Play"! The project has been given the nickname "The Jungle" and offers many exciting and challenging balance and climbing activities, and the chance of mimicking Tarzan by swinging from rope to rope.

Karmøy Golf Club opened in 1998 and offers a 9-hole golf course and unique grounds within walking distance from town. The golf course is open year-round and is described as a park-and-forest course. Golf equipment can be rented.

The Skude Hall by the sports arena contains a climbing wall that is authorized for Norwegian competition and is challenging for both experienced climbers and new beginners. Here are also ball courts and soccer fields, both grass and artificial. The Sport and Recreation Centre is the virtual gateway to the various hiking paths through the Skudeneshavn region.

Sandholmen in Syre, 1 km from town. With its two shallow coves, this beach offers children-friendly play in salty, clean water and white sand. Here one can fish crab or build a sand castle. The area is ideal for water sports and offers easy access for small boats. You can fish, cook your catch over a bond fire, and "live like Robinson Crusoe".

Sandvesanden and Mjølhussanden, 3 km from town, are two of Norway's finest beaches with their fine-grained white sand. Here sand volleyball and other beach sports are played. The enormous blue-white waves from the North Sea beat the pearly white shores, to the fearful joy of the swimmers and surfers. The crystal clear water promises the "crème de la crème" of bathing. North Sea waves provide a paradise for surfers year-round.

Varnavikane is a little, shallow beach with a small boat harbor in Lahammar.

Høynessjøen. Here you can experience pole fishing from the naked rock or a swim in anisland idyll.

Sandhålandsanden is an inviting sandy beach for the whole family. It lies 5 km from town and 300 meters below Sandve Camping.

Stavasanden lies 13 km from town. It is a long, beautiful beach, characterized by the "Fishermen's Memorial" and the King Ferking monument.

The Town ParkThe Park at the end of Søragadå is a beautiful natural park, planted in the year 1900. It is the town's "auditorium" on festive occasions.

The Galleon figure, The Lady of the Park from the sailing ship "Concordia", hangs from a cliff at the entrance to the park. Farther into the park you find the Yes and No Benches, on which many a couple have begun their romance. From The View, you gaze at Skudeneshavn and the ocean from a higher level. Last but not least, the most exciting attraction may be The Moon Rock, a quartz-dolomite-marble rock dated to be 800 million years old!

Hiking RoutesYou find in the near vicinity of town a unique terrain with marked trails. You can visit New Zealand Hut, an authentic gold digger hut like the one Kristian Kristiansen had as a gold digger in Greymoth, New Zealand.

Røyningsbu is a hiking goal worth a visit. This is a 2 hour walk through Norway's oldest fauna, in which you experience Karmøy's heathery. Idyllic trails follow ponds and creeks and are a gold-land for photographers.

Syreneset Fort is a bunker and cannon location from World War II, with a view stretching from Jæren to the south and Bømlo to the north.

WaterwaysSkudeneshavn's waters may be used freely. Here are lots of fishing areas and bare rock on which to land. There are plenty of small coves in which to "hide away". Stillehavn, also called "Skudeneshavn's lagoon", is to be recommended. It lies a bit hidden behind Vikeholmen Lighthouse (from 1874) that is used as an overnighting facility and is run by Skudenes Seamen's Club.

A visit to Geitungen Lighthouse (from 1924), which is converted to a tourist hut, provides a nostalgic experience of the "good old days"! You will find good pole fishing on the south and east points of the lighthouse. The shortest way to the bathing beaches, Høynessjøen and Sandholmen, are by boat.

FestivalsNorway's biggest maritime cultural festival, The Skude Festival, takes place the first long weekend (Wednesday - Sunday) in July each year. The town's inner harbour is "occupied" by 600 boats and 35- 40,000 visitors, who leave their distinctive mark on "Norway's Summer Town". Coastal Culture is presented on every level: maritime craftsmanship, art exhibits and musical entertainment from home and abroad. www.skudefestivalen.no

The Skudenes Days, with its extended marketplace sales and family entertainment, is arranged every year during the first long weekend (Thursday- Sunday) in June. Summer Gospel in the park is the highlight on Saturday. www.sommergospel.no
