would like to thank everyone who attended the Change of Watch. Joanne Zingler and Sue Anthony handled the check-in table. Karen D’Amico, Rich Calfa, & Ron Zingler
were our photographers for the afternoon. Pat Antoni brought the Boating Skills Virtual Trainer. Plus, our new District Com-mander Mike Ludtke officiated the ceremony, joined by his wife Ellen. Three well-deserved Commander’s Awards were presented at the Change of Watch. They are pictured on the next page, and were awarded to… Dave & Sue Anthony – for all the time & hard work they con-tribute running a hospitality room at both District conferences every year. They handle the planning, the organizing, the pro-curing, and the schlepping. Plus the decorating to whatever theme is thrown their way. And for the past three years they’ve hosted our March dinner theater outing. Pat Antoni – Whenever I need to know how to handle some-thing, get information, find the right contact, etcetera, she is my go to person. She is active and knowledgeable in our squadron, at District 20 and at National. She planned our out-ing to Richardson Adventure Farm last October. Ron Zingler – He assembled an interesting 2016 cruise sched-ule and 2017 looks like a winner too. He planned great new venues for our dinner meetings. Last year – and this year – he hosted everyone at his boat for a pre-dinner get together in May. He put together a tri fold color brochure for our squadron to hand out at the boat show and various events. Last Sep-tember, when our executive meeting facility shuttered its doors just days before, he volunteered to have the meeting at his home. And, last July, he and Paul Omohundro participated with their boats in a charity cruise for cancer survivor children. Thanks to all of them for their support and many contributions to Skokie Valley! Once again this year, Ron & Joanne Zingler will host the May dinner meeting on the 20
th. The plan is similar to last year.
There will be appetizers and socializing at Southport marina starting at 2pm. Then we’ll meet at the Boat House restaurant at 4pm for cocktails, with dinner at 5pm. See page 5 for details and make your reservations by May 11
th.
As always, check out the Cruise Schedule P/C Ron Zingler and others have put together. Information about many of the upcoming cruises can be found in this issue. We’ll have a great summer on and off the water. Reminder #1: this month is membership renewal time for most of us (deadline May 31
st).
Reminder #2: Check your Illinois boat registration, which re-news every 3 years (deadline June 30
th).
Reminder #3: May 20 -26 is National Boating Safety Week. Make sure your flares are not expired; your fire extinguishers’ gauges are in the green; and your first aid kit is fully stocked.

Can We Beat Back the Sea?
Whether you believe in climate change or not, you cannot deny that weather patterns are changing. Super Storms Katrina, Andrew and Sandy were certainly impressive storms which made us wake up and make some changes. Even the tornados in the south, the fire storms in the west and the flood-ing that is happening all over the earth are indications that something is changing. New Orleans spent $15 billion to build a new 130-mile levee system to keep them protected from the sea. New York has taken notice after Sandy flooded their city and have started construction of a barrier to keep sea water out of the city during a major storm. Boston officials are considering a bar-rier that could close off the city from dangerous swells in the bay.
A solution for South Florida may re-quire a rethinking of the region’s plan-ning. Buildings need to be built on higher ground, systems relocated and some places abandoned entirely. Other coastal areas will need to evalu-ate their situation and start planning on some means to keep the sea back, because according to many projec-tions the coast line of this country will look much different by 2050 or 2100 the latest.
