10SK LocalDecember 2010

I recently tried to buy a PC for a new member of

staff. As it would be used for basic a d m i n i s t r a t i o n tasks, I certainly didn’t need some quad core mega computer. Normally I’d buy one off the internet or get one direct from a wholesaler I use, but the wholesaler didn’t have anything suitable and I hadn’t left myself enough time to buy one online. With some trepidation I headed off to a national PC retailer.

Once there, I was very surprised. They had a very limited range of desktops, most of which were too highly specified (and expensive!) for the task. They do have an in-house business supplier but, although they did have an appropriate specification PC available, it was still rather pricey and had a two week delivery time. The sales advisor, instead, felt that I should get a laptop, explaining that there didn’t seem to be much demand for desktops

COMPUTER ADVICEIs the desktop PC obsolete?

these days so they didn’t carry much stock. The whole saga prompted me to weigh up the merits of laptops versus conventional PCs.

Fans of the laptop can point out that it has come a long way in the last few years. Modern laptops are powerful, lightweight and portable, have high definition screens and they are now considerably cheaper than a similar spec desktop. The manufacturers have responded to customer criticisms of the built in mouse pad by developing a compact conventional mouse with a retractable cable which retails for a few pounds. Similarly, most laptops now have a number pad built into the keyboard. The built in wireless connectivity that all laptops have means you can work from anywhere in the home or office. You’re not tied to a desk.

Desktops have an equally lengthy list of criticisms, but also solutions for common laptop short-comings. If you are a visual designer or a serious gamer the screen on a laptop is not large enough and the speakers are too weak. Typing on the compact keyboard on a laptop can be irritating and if, as is not uncommon, you spill your coffee on it you need to get the whole computer repaired or even replaced. With a desktop you just buy a new keyboard. The same problem applies to the screen, the ports and the disk drive – if any part of a laptop breaks the whole unit has to be repaired. The problem is not really the cost of having it repaired; the process can frequently take weeks and for all that time you haven’t got access to your precious software, files or emails.

The sheer portability of laptops can also be a problem in its own right. They are very easy to steal and, if this happens, you haven’t just lost a laptop; you’ve lost all the data, software and personal details that were on it. Don’t forget that the internet can be a very dangerous place for children these days and for that reason many families prefer the household computer to be in a “public” room such as the lounge or kitchen. With a laptop it is so easy for them to take it up to their bedroom.

Whatever type of computer is right for you depends very much on what you use it for and your personal circumstances. How did I resolve my own personal dilemma? Simple; I bought a laptop for my wife and substituted it for her old desktop which I moved to the office. If only all IT conundrums were so easily resolved.

Caller: No.Operator: OK, sir. Can you tell me what you have done up until this point?Caller: Sure. You told me to write ‘click’ and I wrote ‘click’’.

Caller: I’m having trouble with WordPerfect. Operator: What sort of trouble? Caller: Well, I was just typing and all of a sudden the all of the words went away. Operator: Went away? Hmm. So what does your screen look like now? Caller: Nothing, it’s blank; it won’t accept anything when I type.Operator: Are you still in WordPerfect, or did you get out? Can you see the C: prompt on the screen?’ Caller: What’s a sea-prompt? Operator: Never mind, can you move your cursor around the screen? Caller: There isn’t any cursor: I told you, it won’t accept anything I type. Operator: Does your monitor have a power indicator? Caller: What’s a monitor?Operator: It’s the thing with the screen on it that looks like a TV. Does it have a little light that tells you when it’s on? Caller: I don’t know. Operator: Well, then look on the back of the monitor and find where the power cord goes into it. Can you see that? Caller: Yes, I think so. Operator: Great. Follow the cord to the plug, and tell me if it’s plugged into the wall. Caller: Yes, it is.Operator: When you were behind the monitor, did you notice that there were two cables plugged into the back of it, not just one? Caller: No. Operator: Well, there are. I need you to look back there again and find the other cable. Caller: Okay, here it is.Operator: Follow it for me, and tell me if it’s plugged securely into the back of your computer. Caller: I can’t reach. Operator: Uh huh. Well, can you see if it is? Caller: No. Operator: Even if you maybe put your knee on something and lean way over?

Caller: Oh, it’s not because I don’t have the right angle - it’s because it’s dark. Operator: Dark? Caller: Yes - the office light is off, and the only light I have is coming in from the window. Operator: Well, turn on the office light then. Caller: I can’t. Operator: No? Why not? Caller: Because there’s a power failure. Operator: A power......... A power failure? Aha, Okay, we’ve got it licked now. Do you still have the boxes and manuals and packing stuff your computer came in? Caller: Well, yes, I keep them in the closet. Operator: Good. Go get them, and unplug your system and pack it up just like it was when you got it. Then take it back to the store you bought it from. Caller: Really? Is it that bad? Operator: Yes, I’m afraid it is. Caller: Well, all right then, I suppose. What do I tell them? Operator: Tell them you’re too stupid to own a computer!!!!!

ROAD TESTSaab 9-5 2.0 TiD

It is an astonishing 13 years since the previous version of the Saab 9-5 first appeared on our roads. At the time it was a big, comfortable

executive saloon and fared well against the Vauxhall Omega and Ford Scorpio, which were still in production at the time. It didn’t really cut the mustard against rivals such as the BMW 5 series and, after 13 years of continuous production and virtually no investment in R&D, it was little more than a sad tombstone to the bankrupt behemoth that was General Motors.

But now Saab has been bought by Dutch luxury carmaker, Spyker, and an all new 9-5 is on the scene. Could this be the start of a renaissance for Saab? I always think that half the battle has been won in this sector if you can produce a car that is easy on the eye and the new 9-5 is certainly that. It was designed by the same GM team that was responsible for the Vauxhall Insignia and, in fact, the car is based on a stretched version of the Insignia platform. Given that the Insignia is an extremely handsome car, this is a very good starting point. The 9-5 looks great from any angle but is really at its best from a rear quarter view – the deeply angled C pillar, curvaceous boot and rear screen and the bold stripe of lighting across the rear all look fantastic. I know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I would definitely say that this is the best looking car in a peer group that includes the new BMW 5 Series and the Audi A6.

Climb inside and the first impression is of a vast amount of space – the 9-5 is a very big car, almost as capacious as a Mercedes S Class. The second impression is that it’s very dark in there; apart from an occasional splash of fake aluminium and the green glow of the instruments, everything is black. There are

acres of shiny black plastic that has no place at all in a prestige car and some of that plastic aluminium is truly hideous. The seats seem comfortable but I sense that they wouldn’t have that continent crossing luxury that I associate with Saabs of yore. Despite all this I actually like the interior; a lighter colour scheme and some higher quality plastics and Saab could have something to rival an Audi, though the quirky layout of the switchgear is always going to be a problem.

At present there are two versions of the 2.0 litre diesel, one producing 158bhp and the other 187bhp. I tried the lower powered version mated to a six speed manual gearbox with a rather notchy shift. The engine is quiet enough from inside the car and reasonably punchy but this is a heavy motor and the higher output unit would be a better bet for most drivers. The 8.8 second 0-62 time and 130mph top whack are reasonable though.

The ride and handling are a mixed bag with a relatively supple ride spoiled by jitteriness on poor surface and precise, well weighted steering countered by excessive roll in the corners. Bear in mind, though, that I drove the base level model and there are adaptive dampers, a quicker steering rack and four wheel drive available on the options list. What’s more, if you are on a slippery road and something goes wrong, this is the car to be in; the ESP system is staggeringly good.

Let’s sum up then. As it stands the 9-5 is not a serious contender against Mercedes, BMW, Audi or Jaguar; the interior is too tacky, dynamically it’s inferior and the Saab brand is badly tarnished. There is a lot of potential here though; fit some decent materials in the cabin and source some better engines and Saab could have a world beater on its hands.

Mr P's Trees

Ihave always had a soft spot for the more obscure things in life, and what could be more obscure than a plant

that can live for 250 years, weigh up to 6 tons and has no leaves?! I use the words soft spot guardedly because what I’m talking about here are Cacti – those horticultural oddities that don’t really fit any of your usual plant stereotypes as they appear closer to sea urchins than Dahlias!

This article hopefully also serves as a fitting epitaph to my own spiny friend who followed me around the world but sadly took its final lungful of carbon dioxide earlier this year… Normally I don’t get sentimental about plants, but this one was somehow different and I always viewed it as more of a low maintenance pet than a plant! I brought it back from a school football trip to Germany a few light years ago

IN THE GARDENAnimal, Vegetable or Mineral?

since when it has sat on a multitude of windowsills – flowering w i t h o u t fail every summer. Out of all the t h o u s a n d s of plants I’ve had the pleasure of nurturing, perversely this is the one I have always treasured, even though it barely grew a couple of centimetres in all its 40 years. Good enough excuse, I thought, for taking my kids on their first ‘serious’ garden centre visit the other day to buy their own cactus, in the hope it might help spark the (as yet dormant) gardening bug……..

……..After diverting their attention from all the small furry animals, sweets, toys, interesting looking tools and other child attractors that are omnipresent in garden centres these days, we finally spotted the cacti in the plant comedy corner. I say comedy corner because it was more of a freak show than a plant display, with the cacti sitting alongside a fascinating arrangement of insectivorous plants (that’s another story) with some Cowboy and Indian figures to help set the scene.

However, it did the trick as they were mesmerised by the weird shapes, colours and textures and couldn’t decide whether they liked the ones with the beehive hairdo’s or the really vicious sado-reptilian

looking ones. They were also quite taken by the ones covered in little flowers until yours truly spoiled the illusion by proving that they weren’t real flowers simply paper ones that had been cruelly stuck into the poor little cacti. After getting over this disappointment they chose, with much mirth and tittering, some plants which bore striking resemblances to little bottoms. Clearly they weren’t interested that these are actually better known as Living Stones or Lithops sp but at least it had the desired effect of generating a spark of interest. You can only imagine their amazement when some very pretty flowers appeared out of their little derrières - they still think I doctored them!

Whilst in this country we might think of cacti as little more than horticultural knick-knacks, elsewhere they are of immense commercial value. They are

widely used in landscapes in the States and Australia and also as cash crops for the product ion of cochineal and Tequila. But, as far as we are concerned, I think that global warming will see cactus and the rest of the succulent plant species being more commonly used as bedding plants. Personally I think they would make superb candidates for window box planting; imagine a box full of cacti outside all your downstairs windows – perfect anti-burglar devices.

CHILDREN’S BOOK REVIEWAnne of Green Gables - L M Montomery By Scarlett Clemmow

Anne of Green Gables is a book about a young

orphan girl who goes to live on a farm, Green Gables. Unfortunately, the couple who own the farm wanted a boy and, at first, it looks as if she’ll have to go back to the orphanage. But Marilla, the woman who is to be Anne’s foster mother, has a change of heart. Most of the book is about Anne growing up and going to college, but there is an unexpected ending. The book is very well written and makes you laugh and cry; a particular attribute of it is that, unlike most classics, it appeals to younger readers.

Some people would say the book is a little old-fashioned but I found it delightful. Although you may be put off by the fact

that Anne of Green Gables is a classic, it’s actually very easy reading and there are many adaptations. There is also a sequel and another author wrote a prequel. Some of the ideas in it may be slightly outdated but, after you begin to read and enjoy the story, it just becomes part of Anne’s funny little world. Another part of the magic of this book is that adults as well as children can read it.

My favourite thing about Anne of Green Gables is that the author, L.M Montgomery, has invented a heroine who is very easy to relate to and, in the process, created a book that I’m sure people will be enjoying for generations to come.

The book is heartfelt, funny and sad in part; an enjoyable read for people of any age. Although it is over a hundred and fifty years old, it has not become outdated yet and I doubt it ever will.

It is difficult to understate the importance of the jet engine to modern

life and luxuries. We not only use it to go on holiday, it is a major reason for having fresh fruit available in our shops all year around. They are also used in many industrial settings such as oil & gas rigs and power stations.

The concept of the jet engine was actually developed independently by two engineers unaware of each other’s work, which is not too surprising. Would you give up the secrets of such an obviously useful machine?

Even the first design plans showed that jet engines could produce power on an amazing scale. Remember that the first powered aircraft, the Wright Flyer, which flew just 27 years before Frank Whittle’s design was patented in 1930, could manage 30mph. Where as when the Heinkel 178, the first jet powered aircraft to fly, took off in 1939, it achieved a speed of 330mph, using a turbojet engine patented by German engineer Dr Hans von Ohain in 1936.

Frank Whittle joined the RAF as an apprentice and went on to become a pilot

and eventually a test pilot in 1931.He had great difficulty in finding any

financial support for the development of his idea of the gas turbine aero engine, which he devised when he was only 22. He therefore had to use his own resources to fund his research but, as mentioned, he obtained his first patent in 1930. However, it took seven more years before his first engine was constructed and then tested in a rig in 1937. It was from this prototype that the first British and American jets were developed.

The Gloster Aircraft Company built the first Whittle Jet in 1941.

The engines of von Ohain and Whittle were different internally. They were not in touch with each other during the early years of development of the jet engine, since their countries were at war with each other and they met for the first time in 1978. Subsequently, both von Ohain and Whittle were recognised as co-inventors of the jet engine.

Frank Whittle was knighted in recognition of his work and he and von Ohain shared the Draper prize of the National Academy of Engineering.

GREAT BRITISH INVENTIONSThe Jet Engine By George Leslie

The Jet Engine.A true engineering

marvel that has changed the world by allowing affordable mass travel

and transport.

A great British (and German) invention.
