Existing Product: Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion

The ingredients used to make Aveeno are mostly things that are organic but you still wouldn’t eat most of them. Many of them are used to help the look and feeling of the lotion instead of how it works. • Water• Glycerin: a sugar alcohol, colorless, odorless liquid, sweet tasting and non-

toxic, used to dissolve in water for pharmaceutical formulations. • Distearyldimonium Chloride: An organic compound with detergent-like

properties. It was once a major component of fabric softeners, but has been largely phased out because of its low biodegradability. Sometimes used in cosmetics to reduce static electricity.

• Petrolatum: Also known as petroleum jelly. Has been used for skin care for many years. Flammable when warmed up.

• Isopropyl Palmitate: Made of an organic acid and alcohol, used as a thickening agent and anit-static agent.

• Cetyl Alcohol: A fatty alcohol that is waxy at room temperature. Originally made from whale oil but today is usually made from palm oil. Is used as a thickening agent or to lubricate nuts and bolts.

• Avena sativa kerala flour: Made from oats • Benzyl Alcohol: A colorless liquid that smells nice and dissolves in water. • Sodium Chloride: edible salt

Aveeno: Problems • Ingredients: Aveeno is made from water and 8 chemicals. The

chemicals are not food for your body. • Manufacturing: The chemicals are shipped to the manufacturing plant

in New Jersey where they are mixed together, probably using heat.• Packaging: The bottle and pump are made of plastic which takes a

long time to break down. Even when it finally breaks down, the smaller pieces are still toxic. Plants and animals can’t use them for food

• Ship to Stores: Trucks that burn gas are used to ship the product all over the U.S. from New Jersey. It is 2,746 miles from New Jersey to San Diego.

• Use: It might feel good when you put it on, but your skin cells have to work to get rid of the chemicals.

• Throw away bottle: If the bottle is not recycled it will last 80 to 200 years in a landfill.

Redesign Problems

• Ingredients: water and 8 chemicals

• Manufacturing: shipped to NJ and mixed

• Packaging: plastic lasts too long

• Shipping: trucks from NJ

• Use: skin must get rid of chemicals

• Throw away bottle: lasts 80-200 years in land fill.

Redesign

• Ingredients: Use natural ingredients that are good for your body: aloe vera gel, olive oil, avocado oil, sunflower oil and safflower oil. All of these are edible.

• Manufacturing: Don’t use heat to mix the ingredients together. Squeeze the oils out using a strong press.

• Packaging: Use glass bottles and pumps that are made from PLA (comes from corn, biodegradable in 90 days).

• Shipping: Make the product in 3 locations so shipping distance is very short: San Diego, Chicago and North Carolina. Use local ingredients, for example only use olive oil and avocado oil in San Diego. Use sunflower oil and safflower oil in Chicago and NC.

• Use: All of the ingredients are edible so your skin cells can focus on being healthy instead of focusing on getting rid of chemicals.

• Throw away bottle: The glass bottle can be recycled and the pump will biodegrade quickly. Also offer to refill the bottle at a discount. The glass bottle and pump can also be used for other things.

Biomimicry

• Animals evolved with skin cells that protect them. Humans also have good skin cells. But humans like to wash their bodies more than needed so that they smell better. This washes away the protective oils from their skin.

Most skin lotions use chemicals that feel good but are not always good for the skin cells. The skin cells have to work hard to get rid of the chemicals. Instead, we should use ingredients that help the skin cells be healthy. We should only use ingredients that are safe enough to eat. Skin is our body's largest organ, so we should protect it.

If we use edible and organic ingredients, our skin cells will be able to do their job better.

“Skin Food” • I redesigned the lotion I used for my skin so that it is better for

the environment and better for my skin. • I used Biomimicry to figure out that my skin knows what to do

but it can use some help to stay healthy because I wash it too much like all humans do.

• I built a circular system for this product so that it won’t hurt the environment. My redesign saves energy in manufacturing and shipping and there is no waste because everything is recyclable or biodegradable.

• My new skin lotion is so safe that you can eat it.
