If I wanted to, I could spend an entire year writing about minimalism relating only to designs originating from Japan. Minimalism has practically been forced upon Japanese design due to a combination of their culture and living condition. Popularly known as having some of the densest cities in the world, Japan is no stranger to producing small-space architecture and versatile interiors.

Skim Milk: Warborn Apartment by Caiano Morgado ArquitectosPosted on 12.02.10 by Leo in Architecture

Page 3: Skim Milk- Vento House in Italy by MZC Architettura

Let us start with the fact that Warborn Apartment, designed by Caiano Morgado Architects, is magnificent both inside and outside. The outside facade of the structure is amazing — of course — but the outside landscape upon which this building sits is no less stunning. While most minimalist design comes packaged with a cold and empty sentiment, this house radiates warmth and welcomeness,

V23K16 by Pasel Künzel Architects is a winning competition entry for urban prototyping focusing on the needs of light and open air space. When I look at the architecture of this building, the first word that comes to mind is “ambient.”

Skim Milk: House in Paço de Arcos Portugal by Jorge MealhaPosted on 11.18.10 by Leo in Architecture

Page 6: Skim Milk- Vento House in Italy by MZC Architettura

The recently completed house is a beautifully minimal home in Lisbon, Portugal. Designed by Jorge Mealha, this abode is built on a sloping site facing the sea with an emphasis on geometry and proportion. Light was strategically utilized to produce the effect of a constantly changing interior space. Even at night, the illumination from the moon spreads throughout its walls to create a mesmerizing play on shadows and light.

Just to be clear, A-cero has produced some of the most modern beauties the architecture world has ever seen. Headquartered in La Finca, A-cero is spearheaded by Joaquin Torres, and was first established in 1996. Fifteen years later, the firm has four global offices and a new furniture line with Sancal.

Skim Milk: TH House in Japan by BaquerattaPosted on 11.04.10 by Leo in Architecture

Itʼs baffling how many ways an architect can strip away the non-essentials and still create something beautiful. The people over at Baqueratta have recently completed TH House, a single-family abode in the Tochigi Prefecture of Japan with just the right amount of minimalism. From the look of it, nature definitely played a key part in how the space was planned. White concrete walls, large windows, and lots of light combine to make this place look like a haven to live in.

Skim Milk: Mrs Bill by Mick BornPosted on 10.28.10 by Leo in Home Furnishings

Looking around for well-designed furniture can be a tedious process; but then, something like Mrs Bill comes along and sweeps you off the floor. No, Iʼm not referring to your attractive next-door neighbor. This Mrs Bill, designed by Mick Born for Karl Andersson & Söner, is something excitingly different.

Skim Milk: Hybrid Tube Amplifier by

Case-RealPosted on 10.21.10 by Leo in Technology

I want to start this article off with a quote from one of the most well-known designers in history: Charles Eames. He once said that “The details are not details — they make the product. It is, in the end, these details that give the product its life.” I couldnʼt agree more with this statement, and its profoundly precise representation of minimalism and good design. Hybrid Tube Amplifier, designed by Koichi Futatsumata of Case-Real for Elikit, is a product that would not exist without its details.

Skim Milk: Casa X5 in Italy by MZC ArchitetturaPosted on 10.13.10 by Leo in Architecture

Page 11: Skim Milk- Vento House in Italy by MZC Architettura

The layout of this space flows like a good book or rhythmic poem. Casa X5, designed by Italy-based MZC Architettura, is a beautiful project in the outskirts of Treviso, Italy. The building is constructed of clean, simple materials including concrete, Basalto stone, and light-colored woods. The essence of this abode lies in its steep contrasts and playful lighting. The fusion of sky lights, under lights, back lights, and naked bulbs merge into an almost spaceship-like interior.

Page 12: Skim Milk- Vento House in Italy by MZC Architettura

Situated in the suburbs of Tokyo, Distance of Fog is a recently completed project by Japanese-based StudioGreenBlue. The client was interested in an open floor plan that suited their lifestyle. The house was designed, as per request, with extended brightness into the rooms and natural illumination between the common spaces. Because the house was decidedly opened up into the street, privacy became one of the main concerns.

This concern eventually transmuted itself into an aesthetic opportunity. Since the proximity of the home to the adjacent cul de sac presented a challenging dilemma between privacy and disconnect, the architects envisioned a concept in which the visual range would be broken up, but not completely blocked off. Inspired by the filtering of images, StudioGreenBlue adjusted the level of visual information penetrating through multiple layers, creating an effect similar to looking though fog.

Skim Milk: Fredensborg House by

NORM ArchitectsPosted on 09.23.10 by Leo in Architecture

The aesthetic of minimalism is further accentuated when purposefully contrasted with opposing elements. In the case of Fredensborg House, designed by NORM Architects, the exterior facade is characterized by patterns and rhythmic overlaps, which are not minimal in any sense of the word. However, when the focus is turned inward on the interior, the house becomes a capacious scene, a harmoniously clean space that welcomes one the second he/she enters the central hall of the

house. The contrast is drastic and sudden.

Skim Milk: Pipe by Luca NichettoPosted on 09.16.10 by Leo in Home Furnishings

Luca Nichetto, an Italian designer who studied Industrial Design at IUAV, is no stranger to some of the worldʼs most esteemed design-conscious manufacturers. Most notable are his sources of inspiration — whether it be a music video, or an armor design of a Japanese warrior — he is somehow able to formulate masterful interpretations from ostensibly quixotic visions of his imagination. One of his latest projects, a light fixture titled Pipe, was created in collaboration with the prestigious Established & Sons.

Skim Milk: Atrium House in Spain by Fran Silvestre ArquitectosPosted on 09.09.10 by Leo in Architecture

Roomy, spacious, capacious, and commodious. There are only so many synonyms for the word “openness,” but they all appropriately illustrate the elegantly minimal Atrium House by Fran Silvestre Arquitectos. While most minimalist structures seem to carry a stigma of pretentious provocation, this residence is modestly immersed into the beauty of its surroundings.
