What is CPR?

Page 6: Skill 15: CPR and Drowning. Learning Intention: To equip you with the knowledge to know when and how to administer Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

• Attempt to keep alive an unconscious casualty by simulating the actions of their lungs and heart

• 2 Rescue Breaths to• 30 Chest Compressions• Not intended to restart the heart, just

to keep casualty alive until medical help arrives (so call 999 before starting)

• Of limited use in a wilderness situation due to lengthy response time for emergency services

When should I use CPR?

Page 8: Skill 15: CPR and Drowning. Learning Intention: To equip you with the knowledge to know when and how to administer Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

• On an unconscious, non-breathing casualty

When should I NOT use CPR?

Page 10: Skill 15: CPR and Drowning. Learning Intention: To equip you with the knowledge to know when and how to administer Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

• On a conscious casualty• On a hypothermic casualty

Summary:• Open Airway• Call for/get help• 30 Chest Compressions• 2 Rescue Breaths• Repeat• If more than 1 first aider, swap every

2 minutes (4 repetitions)• Continue until: casualty recovers,

medical help arrives or too exhausted to continue

• The only wilderness situation in which performing CPR has a realistic chance of saving life?

• Open Airway (turn on side to clear fluid from mouth/throat)

• 5 Rescue Breaths• 30 compressions• GET HELP• Continue CPR as before
