Border Streams
This 197-acre preserve is located on the Kent / Sharon town border in the Northwest Hills of Connecticut. Partial funding was provided by the CT DEEP Open Space and Watershed Land Acquisition Grant Program. The property was purchased from the Kent School Corporation in 2003 as part of a local conservation initiative to prevent its slated development as a medium-density residential subdivision. The preserve is predominantly forested but also encompasses several post-agricultural fields and extensive wetlands, like the “Pine Swamp” wetland which includes a rare red spruce wetland community, considered to be one of Connecticut’s critical habitats. The preserve contains critical upland and wetland habitats which support documented rare plants and wildlife species of concern, as well as an impressive diversity of breeding bird species, including interior forest species which are declining in Connecticut and are a national conservation priority. Parking: Trailhead and access are on Skiff Mountain Road, just inside the Kent border, past Marvelwood School and 1.3 miles from its intersection with West Woods Road #1.
