SKF precision rail guides

Introduction

As world leader in the manufacture ofrolling bearings, SKF supplies practic-ally every kind of bearing for rotationaland linear motion.

SKF is therefore in a position tomeet almost any customer require-ment both technically and economi-cally.

This catalogue covers the SKF range of precision rail guides and accessories.

SKF precision rail guides are preci-sion products for linear motion andare therefore ideally suited for usewith in wide variety of machine tools, work centres, handling systems, special machinery, measuring andtest equipment.

The “Modular range” has intro-duced a new concept to the market ofinterchangeability of all the well knownguidance systems including the highcapacity LWRE type guides. This matrix range of rail guides is suitablefor almost every area of application.

SKF precision rail guides are avail-able in many different designs, sizesand standard lengths, incorporatingball, roller or needle roller assembliesand plain bearings. Suitable accesso-ries are also available for attachmentand sealing.

The use of SKF precision rail guidesfacilitates the construction of econo-mical, clearance-free linear guides ofpractically any type and length, according of the building block prin-ciple. The characteristics of the guidesinclude:

– a constant, high degree of runningaccuracy

– low-friction stick-slip-free operation– high speed of travel– low heat generation– low friction and high reliability– high stiffness– excellent load carrying capacity

For applications where high acce-lerations occur or where strokes areshort and of high frequency, SKF railguides with dry sliding liners are re-commended.

These guides are also suitable formachine tool applications where thegood damping properties of these

plain bearing guides is of greater im-portance than the lower friction of therolling element rail guides. For thoseapplications where rail guides, for in-stance because of their limited travelare unsuitable, SKF can supply alter-native forms of linear guidance systems. If you would like further de-tails, please contact SKF for technicaladvice. We will be pleased to providethe required information without obligation and at no cost, or to pre-pare a technical proposal.

Product range

SKF Modular Range rail guidesThe SKF Modular Range consists of amatrix range of rail guide moduleswhich enable an individual choice ofcombinations of rails and rolling ele-ment assemblies. Different require-ments for the guides do not call forchanges in the design or mechanicalenvironment. The choice of appropri-ate rail guides is determined solely bythe mechanical conditions underwhich the guide system is to operate. The operating requirements are covered by five different models (fig 1)which may be defined as rail guideswith:– crossed roller cage assemblies of

the standard LWR series

– ball cage assemblies of the LWR series

– crossed roller cage assemblies ofthe optimised LWRE series

– needle roller cage assemblies ofthe LWRM/LWRV series

– slideway liners of theLWRPM/LWRPV series

Increased performance achievablewithout design modificationThe Modular System is based on thewell-proven LWR design which coversa wide range of applications. The newoptimised LWRE series offers eitherdoubled stiffness and a load carryingcapacity increased by a factor of fiveor, alternatively, for a given load carry-ing capacity, a 50 % reduction inbearing size compared with the standard LWR design (fig 2).

carried out simply and with the mini-mum of delay.

Above all, where the user needs toincrease machine performance, a unitwith a higher load rating can be fitted.In-situ replacement is made easier bythe fact that no new attachment holesor fixing devices are required whenusing rail guides of the Modular Range. An additional advantage is theworld-wide availability through distri-butors, simply by quoting the appro-priate catalogue number. The internaldesign of the LWRE Series assures in-creased operational life through theeven distribution of load. This resultsfrom the optimisation of the cross-section, enabled through the use oflarger rolling elements. The new de-sign allows a significant improvementin the roller/raceway contact perfor-mance. An important additional bene-fit from the updating programme isthe introduction of the practicallymaintenance-free cage made of POMwhich matches are stringent demandsfor long operational life of the rollingelements and maintains is dimensio-nal stability up to +80 °C. The indivi-dual rollers are well covered and thespace between the rails is almost filled, thus providing good protectionagainst contamination. A special cha-racteristic of these cages is that theyconsist of ‘snap-on’ elements and canbe adapted to suit individual needs(fig 3). Conventional crossed roller cages have their rollers arranged alternately evenly spaced, so that onlyhalf the rollers in a preloaded guideare load-bearing while the remainderact as idlers. In the new LWRE cagethese essentially unused rollers cabbe partially turned in the direction ofthe load. For this purpose each indivi-dual cage segment is designed to beturned through 90° about the longitu-dinal axis. These are manual adjust-ments and no special instructions arerequired when ordering from the cata-logue.

Complete rangeIn order to simplify the application ofModular Range of rail guides even easier, all guides within a given sizerange have the same external dimen-sions and thus fit the space require-ments of most commercially availablerail guides. This results in a very wide choice in terms of load carryingcapacity, stiffness and operating cha-racteristics.

From the economical point of view, the use of the optimised LWRE Seriesoffers a double advantage. Firstly (although the initial cost is higher) therange of application is extended signi-ficantly as regards stiffness and loadcarrying capacity; this results in a bet-ter price/performance ratio. Secondly, the replacement of other rail guides, even those supplied by other manu-facturers and already installed, can be

The Modular Range of guide railsThe blue shaded areas in the chart indicate the sizes included in the Modular Range. Some 80 % of appli-cations can be covered by these (fig 4).

These standard, interchangeablerails of the Modular Range comprisemost of the currently available typeson the market (fig 5). The choice of aspecific rolling element or, for extremeconditions, of a slideway liner, is de-termined only by the actual operatingconditions (fig 6). Generally, any railguide can be operated in the ‘clamped’or ‘floating’ mode. The design of therail guides does not impose any special space requirements.

LWR seriesThis basic series of the Modular Range covers a wide range of appli-cations for linear bearings with limitedtravel. Where low friction is essential, ball cage assemblies are recommend-ed. If, on the other hand, high loadcarrying capacity is the chief require-ment, crossed roller assemblies are tobe preferred. The LWR series is manu-factured in nine sizes based on rollingelement dimensions.

LWRE seriesFor a given load carrying capacity, thedimension of the LWRE series are sig-nificantly less than those of the corre-sponding member of the LWR series. Thus, for instance, an LWRE 6 guidewith a cage length of 100 mm has agreater load carrying capacity than a standard LWR 12. The LWR 12 measures 58 x 28 mm whereas theLWRE 6 measures only 31 x 15 mm(fig 2).

LWRM/LWRV seriesThese guides are used principallywhere high load carrying capacity iscalled for in combination with highstiffness, for instance on grinding machines. This series is fitted withneedle roller and cage assembliesconsisting of two rows of needle rollers at right angles to each other.

LWRPM/LWRPV seriesWhere short strokes of high frequencyoccur, this version with sliding liners isan essential alternative to those withrolling bearing assemblies. In the caseof balls or rollers subjected to hightransverse acceleration, pitting of thetracks may occur as a result of theunfavourable tribological conditions.Sliding rail guides are preferred insuch circumstances. The liner materialis based on PTFE and is bonded on tothe unhardened LWRPM rail guideand then ground to the correct dimen-sion.

These wear-resistant guides arecharacterised by their stick-slip-free,vibration-damping running properties,at the same time offering excellentstiffness and emergency running pro-perties. These guide rails are largelyunaffected by dirt, coolants and lubri-cants.

Materials and precisionThe rails of the Modular Range guidesare manufactured from tool steel 90 MnCrV 8 with a hardness of be-tween 58 and 64 HRC. If required bythe application, the rails can also besupplied in special stainless steel, e.g. X 90 CrMoV 18 in all standard di-mensions. The rolling elements aremade from carbon chromium steel100 Cr 6 with a hardness of between58 and 64 HRC. The parallelism of theraceways is divided into three clas-ses. Class P10, with a maximum de-viation of 10 µm per 1000 mm length, meets most of the demands for nor-mal machinery. Where greater preci-sion is required, tolerance classes P5and P2 are also available.

The range is complemented by various accessories specially de-signed for the Modular Range of guide rails. These include end pieceswith or without wipers, also specialmounting screws.

Computerised Modular Range dataData relating to the Modular Range ofrail guides is also included in the LinCAD software program.

LinCAD consists of a selection anda graphics program, enabling thechoice of rail guide and of its incorpo-ration into a drawing.

SKF precision rail guides

Other productsIn addition to the Modular Range, the selection of SKF products also includes a wide variety of rail guidesand rolling elements.

LWM/LWV rail guides(see table on pages 34 – 36)LWM/LWV rail guides differ from theLWRM/LWRV guides of the ModularRange only in their external dimen-sions. The internal geometry is identi-cal and the same needle roller assem-blies are therefore used.

In contrast to the LWRM/LWRV(two series) the LWM/LWV guidescomprise 6 series up to size of A x B = 80 mm x 50 mm. LWM/LWVrail guides are supplied as standardwith holes of type 15, namely through holes with counterbore. If for designreasons, it is necessary to screw bothrails from the same side, then one ofthe rails should have holes of type 13,i. e. with thread insert.

LWML rail guides(no table)The LWML rail guide consists of amodified LWM rail guide with the addi-tion of an adjustment wedge. Used inconjunction with an LWV unit and aneedle roller assembly this providesan adjustable rail guide. The inclina-tion of the wedge surface is 1,5 % sothat a displacement of the wedge by 1 mm brings about a 15 µm alterationin the height.

LWM/LWV rails are supplied asstandard with holes type 15 or, if re-quired, with holes of type 13, i. e. withthread insert.

LWML rails can be supplied to tolerance classes P10 and P5.

The LWML rail guides, as well asthe appropriate needle roller assemb-lies and end pieces, are made to order.

Because of the many permutationsavailable, each par of an LWML/LWVrail guide system must be ordered separately, e. g.:

1 rail LWML 552004001 rail LWM 402004002 rails LWV 40200400

2 end pieces LWEML 40202 end pieces LWEM 4020

It should also be stated whetherthe holes are required for right-handor left-hand mounting.

LWN/LWO rail guides(no table)LWN/LWO rail guides differ from theLWM/LWV rail guides only in theirheight, width and attachment holes. The internal geometry is identical tothat of the LWM/LWV types, i. e. theyhave the same load rating.

LWN/LWO rail guides are availablein tolerance classes P10, P5 and P2to order.

LWW/LWZ flat rail guides(no table)LWW/LWZ flat rail guides are used inconjunction with LWR rail guides forthe construction of slides. LWW/LWZflat rail guides and the appropriate rolling bearing assemblies and endpieces are made to order.

LWJ/LWS flat rail guides(no table)LWJ/LWS flat rail guides are used inconjunction with LWRM/LWRV,LWM/LWV or LWN/LWO rails as non-locating rail guide assemblies. Theyare used in the construction of slides.

LWJ/LWS flat rail guides, as well asthe appropriate rolling bearing as-semblies and end pieces are availableto order.

Special rail guides and recirculatingroller guidesIn addition to the standard rail guidesincluded in this catalogue, SKF alsomanufactures flat rail guides with recirculating roller assemblies as wellas special rail guides to customers’own drawings for such applicationsas machine tools, handling systemsand robotics.

Further information on these specialversions and their availability will besupplied on request.

Technical data

Precision of rail guidesSKF precision rail guides, regardlessof type, are available in the same tolerance grades as indicated below.

Raceway accuracyTo meet the different requirements interms of precision of linear bearing arrangements, the rails are producedin three different tolerance classes. These are classified according to theparallelism between the raceways andthe support surfaces A and B (fig 7).

P10Tolerance class normal. This meetsthe requirements of general engineer-ing applications. The deviation fromparallelism for a 1000 mm long rail isapproximately 10 µm. See also adjac-ent table 1.

P5 This corresponds to the normal pre-cision requirements for machine toolapplications. The deviation fromparallelism for 1000 mm long rail isapproximately 5 µm. See also adjac-ent table 1.

P2Higher accuracy than P5 for the mostexacting demands in terms of accu-racy of a linear guidance system.Rails made to this tolerance classshould only be used when the asso-ciated components can be made to acorrespondingly high degree of preci-sion. Rails to tolerance class P2 willbe manufactured by SKF to specialorder, the maximum available lengthbeing 1000 mm. The deviation fromparallelism for a 1000 mm long rail isapproximately 2 µm.

If no mention is made of the requi-site accuracy on the order, rails madeto normal P10 tolerances will be sup-plied.

Dimensional accuracySKF rail guides with limited travel areproduced to the following tolerances(figs. 8 and 9):

Width A: 0/-0,3mmAbutment heightT = B1 + B2 ± 0,02 mmRail height B: 0/-0,2 mmRail length L: ± 0,001 · L mm

For rails composed of two or moresections the tolerance for the totallength is ± 2 mm.

SKF precision rail guides

GradingPrecision rail guides are generally mounted in pairs. In order to obtainthe same assembly width A andheight T (fig 8) the rails are gradedand supplied in pairs.

This ensures that any two similarrail guides in a system will have thesame height. The grading accuracy isalways within the appropriate toler-ance class for the parallelism.

If two or more rolling element assemblies are to be mounted imme-diately behind each other in a rail gui-de, the rolling elements must have thesame tolerance grade. On request, graded rolling element assembliescan be supplied.

Rails of the same profile for recir-culating roller assemblies, which areto be mounted immediately adjacentto each other or immediately behindeych other should be ordered spe-cially. These will be graded in heightor in height and width depending onthe design and then delivered as asingle package.

Built-up rail guides are always matched so that it is not necessary to request this when ordering.

Tolerance of interval between holesThe maximum deviation in the intervalbetween holes measured from centreto centre is ± 0,8 0/

00 of the rail lengthL for one-piece rails (fig 9). The toler-ance for built-up rails is also ± 0,8 0/00

but related to the length of the longestsection. Rails having tighter toleran-ces for the interval between holes canbe supplied on request.

Marking of matched setsMatched components are marked withconsecutive numbers as indicated infig 9a.

13

Accuracy of adjacent componentsAn important criterion for the correctperformance of a rail guide system isthe accuracy of the associated com-ponents. The higher the demands foraccuracy of guidance and for smooth, easy operation, the greater the atten-tion which must be paid to the accu-racy of form and position of the asso-ciated components. Generally thesame accuracy requirements shouldbe applied to these components as tothe rail guides themselves. The adjac-ent table shows the values, for eachtolerance class, of the surface rough-ness, rectangularity and parallelism ofthe adjacent components.

To assure an even load distributionover the roller length, the maximumdifference in height of the supports fora rail guide should not exceed

∆h = 0,1 · B1

where∆h = Maximum height deviation, µmB1 = mean distance between two

rail guides, mm

To obtain good support for the railson the associated components theattachment holes should be carefullydeburred (figs 10 and 11).

Selection of a rail guide for limited travelWhen selecting a rail guide for limitedtravel, the length of travel, load carry-ing capacity, requisite life and stiffnessare governing factors. Other factorsare also important, including the requisite speed of travel, lubrication, operating temperature, ease of move-ment, environmental influences andcertain design constraints, for in-stance whether “clamped” or “floa-ting” guidance is required.

The most important considerationswhen selecting the size and length ofthe rolling element assembly are loadcarrying capacity, life and stiffness.

For light, centrally acting loads andmoderate demands for speed of tra-vel, it is possible to use practically allthe types of guides listed in this cata-logue. However, technical and eco-nomic reasons often dictate the choice

of the most appropriate model for agiven application.

In selecting the length of a rail guide and of the individual rails, thetravel as well as the load carrying capacity and the main factors, thelength of the cage assembly beingchosen to give the requisite life.

The following relationships serve as guidelines in making such calcula-tions:For a given length to travel:

Cage length = stroke, at least

For a given cage length:

Rail length = cage length+ 0,5 x stroke

For a given rail length and stroke, thecage length is given by:

Cage length = Rail length– 0,5 x stroke

LWR Precision rail guides

LWR rail guides are well-proven, limited-travel, linear guides used innumerous applications. They consistof two identical rails between whichcrossed roller assemblies or ball as-semblies are inserted, depending onthe application.

LWR rail guides with crossed rollerassembly are robust linear bearingswith high load carrying capacity. Theirspecial characteristics make themsuitable for a large proportion of linearbearing arrangements with limited travel.

LWR rail guides will ball assemblycan be used to advantage where loads are light and easy running is required.

Rails with a length greater than1200 mm are supplied in sections.

Because of the many permutationsavailable, each part of an LWR railguide system must be ordered sepa-rately, e. g:

4 rails LWR 906002 crossed roller cage assemblies

Ball and crossed roller assembliesfor LWR rail guides

Ball assembliesWhere moderate loads are to be sup-ported by a rail guide and greater priority is given to smooth operationand low friction, the use of ball assemblies is recommended.

LWJK ball assemblies are providedwith a plastic ball-retaining cage. These are available for sizes 1 to 12,the cages for sizes 6 and upwardsbeing reinforced with steel wire.

LWJJ ball assemblies with brass cage are available in sizes 1 to 24. For sizes 6 to 12, the balls are retained through staggering or theapertures.

Crossed roller assembliesWhere greater stiffness is required, crossed roller assemblies are recom-mended. Various cage types are avail-able, depending on the size of the rollers.

LWAK crossed roller assemblies are fitted as standard with a plasticcage to retain the cylindrical rollers.

From size 3 upwards, metal cagesare also available:LWAA crossed roller assemblieswith retained rollers in pressed steelcage for sizes 3 and 15.

LWDD crossed roller units with non-retained cylindrical rollers and brasscage are available from size 3 to 24.

LWAL crossed roller assemblies are available in sizes 6 to 12 with alu-minium cages. In this case the rollersare retained. An overview of the vari-ous rolling element assemblies will befound on page 18.

End pieces for LWR rail guidesEnd pieces prevent the drift of the cage away from the loaded zone.

LWERA end piecesfulfil these requirements in low-loadconditions combined with horizontalmounting.

LWERB end pieces should be usedfor high loads and vertical mounting.

LWERC end pieces have the additi-onal feature of a felt wiper with sealinglip to keep the track free from dirt.

All end pieces are supplied withattachment screws.

LWGD special attachment screwscan be used for all rails within the Modular Range.

SKF Modular RangeThe LWR rail guides form the basis forthe whole Modular Range system. Inthis catalogue all guides with designa-tions commencing LWR... are inter-changeable with each other within agiven dimension series. All externaland attachment dimensions corre-spond with those of the LWR series.

LWR rail guides are available in antotal of nine sizes. Within the “ModularRange” sizes 3, 6 and 9 are includedwhich, according to experience, cover80 % of the normal market require-ments. To enable prompt delivery fromstock, certain standard rail lengthshave been defined.

Please refer to the tables for furtherdata on the Modular Range of rail guides. Further information can alsobe found on pages 6 to 9.

LWRE rail guides

LWRE rail guides are a logical deve-lopment of the proven LWR rail gui-des.

Within the Modular Range systemthe LWRE rail guides offer an out-standing price/performance ratio.Alongside the familiar characteristicsof the LWR series, the new LWRE railguides offer the advantages of a five-fold increase in the load carrying capacity and a doubling of the stiff-ness, achieved through optimised internal geometry in conjunction withlarger roller diameters.

LWRE rail guides offer a greatly increased safety margin, thus a verymuch smaller LWRE rail guide can beused in a given design space while

maintaining the same load carryingcapacity as the LWR.

The mounting and attachment dimensions of the LWRE rail guidesconform to those of all the SKF Modular Range rail guides includedin this catalogue.

Rail guides of more than 1200 mmin length should be built up of sections.

Because of the large number ofpossible combinations, each of thecomponents parts of LWRE rail guidesmust be ordered separately, e. g:4 rail guides LWRE 62002 crossed roller assemblies

Crossed roller assemblies for LWRE rail guides

LWAKE crossed roller assembliesare fitted with a plastic cage with retained rollers.

The elements of the cage are as-sembled using a ‘snap in’ techniquewhereby each element can be rotatedmanually through an angle of 90°. Theload rating and stiffness can be en-hanced by this technique. Dimensionalstability of the LWAKE crossed rollerassembly is maintained up to a tem-perature of +80°C. The cage retainsthe rollers and at the same time almost fills the free space between

the rails, thus providing good protec-tion against the ingress of dirt.

End pieces for LWRE rail guidesEnd pieces serve to restrict the drift ofthe crossed roller assemblies awayfrom the loaded zone.

LWERE end pieces are generallyused for horizontal and vertical appli-cations.

LWEREC end pieces should be usedwhere it is necessary to reduce therisk of contamination of the raceways. These end pieces are fitted with a plastic wiper with a sealing lip.

All end pieces are supplied with appropriate fixing screws.

Special attachment screws for LWRE rail guidesFor designations and dimensionsplease refer to page 19. The LWGDspecial attachment screws listed inthe tables may be selected to suiteach size of LWRE rail guide.

Internal geometry of LWR and LWRE rail guidesNormal LWR rail guides utilise onlyabout 40 % of the roller length: Due toparallel displaced load direction forces on to the LWR rail guidesexerts an internal tilting moment onthe rollers. This can lead to high edgestresses and hence to a reduction ofload carrying capacity. LWRE rail guides, on the other hand, utilise thewhole roller length. The internal geo-metry is such that no tilting momentcan occur and there are no edgestresses. At the same time the diame-ter of the rollers has been considerablyincreased (+33%).These features provide the followingadvantages:– fivefold increase in load carrying

capacity– 100 % increase in stiffness

LWRPM/LWRPV rail guides

LWRPM/LWRPV rail guides are linearbearings for limited travel, with slide-way liners made in Turcite-B®1).

This material, based on PTFE, isself-lubricating and possesses excel-lent sliding properties.

The dry sliding liner is attached tothe unhardened LWRPM rail with adhesive and the surface is then gro-und. In order to avoid damage to thesliding surface, the leading edges ofthe LWRPV rails are slightly rounded.Dimensions of these rails are the sa-me as those of the LWRV series.LWRPM/LWRPV rail guides should beused where, because of external influ-ences, rail guides incorporating rollingelement assemblies are unsuitable.

Such applications include thosewhere high shock loads occur whichcould cause indentation of the rollingelements in the raceways, or whereextremely short strokes are required. The unfavourable tribological condi-tions produced by such operationwould give rise to raceway pitting in arolling element rail guide.

The mounting and attachmentdimensions of the LWRPM/LWRPVrail guides conform to those of allthe SKF Modular Range rail guidesincluded in this catalogue.

LWRPM/LWRPV rail guides are characterised by:

– stick-slip-free operation– smooth running– good emergency running

properties– low wear and high reliability– insensitivity to contamination– very good vibration damping

propertiesWhen ordering, the individual com-

ponents of the rail guides should bespecified, e. g:

End pieces

LWRPM/LWRPV rail guides, by virtue of their design, do not normally require end pieces.

For this reason, tapped holes on the end faces are also unnecessary.

However, for production reasons, LWRPV rail guides will in certain cases be supplied with end face tapped holes.

LWW/LWV rail guides

LWW/LWV rail guides enable the design of linear guidance systems forheavy loads with maximum stiffness. The internal geometry is identical withthat of the Modular Range rails of theLWRM/LWRV series. As the sameneedle roller assembly is used, the load bearing characteristics are alsothe same. The external dimensions ofthe LWM/LWV rail guides, however, differ slightly from those of theLWRM/LWRV Modular Range dimen-sions.

LWM/LWV rail guides find wide application in machine tools.

LWM/LWV rail guides have as standard attachment hole type 15, i.e.through hole with countersinking.

If attachment hole type 13 is or-

dered, corresponding threaded ins-erts are supplied along with the guide.

For new designs the choice ofLWRM/LWRV rail guides is recom-mended. These offer the advantageof being interchangeable with otherrail guides of the Modular Range.

Needle roller assemblies forLWM/LWV rail guidesLWHV needle roller assemblies havea plastic cage with retained needlerollers. The elastic connection be-tween the two cage sections for thetwo roller rows enables the cage tobend to any angle.LWHW needle roller assembliescomprise an aluminium cage withneedle rollers arranged at right angles

to each other. The needle rollers areretained by the cage.End pieces for LWM/LWV rail guidesEnd pieces serve to prevent drift ofthe cage away from the loaded zone.LWEM- and LWEV end pieces aresuitable for horizontally and verticallymounted rail guides.LWEAM and LWEAV end pieces have the addition of a plastic wiperwith a sealing lip which serves to keepthe track tree from dirt.

All end pieces are supplied to-gether with attachment screws.

Rail guides with a length of morethan 1200 mm should be made up ofsections. If, for design reasons,single-pieces rails are required, thesecan be supplied to special order.

LWML rail guides

LWML rail guides consists of a modi-fied LWM rail guide with the additionof an adjustment wedge. In conjunc-tion with an LWV rail guide and aneedle roller assembly this results inan adjustable linear guidance system. The wedge has a slope of 1,5 % sothat a displacement of the wedge by 1 mm brings about a 15 µm alterationin height.

LWML rails are supplied as stan-dard with hole type 15, i.e. throughbored and countersink or hole type13, i.e. with threaded insert. They areavailable to tolerance classes P10 and P5. Multi-section rails cannot besupplied.

LWML rails with the appropriateneedle roller assemblies and end pieces are available to order.

I should also be stated at the timeof ordering whether the mounting holes are required for right-hand orleft-hand mounting.
