This was of course a luxury trade – but have not luxuries always been what instinctively “ seems the most necessary to man?” Fernand Braudel
Urbanity Love Regeneration Play
What is design without love? What is play without edge?
swollen
“ Swollen is what happens to your head when you pull off a trick for the first time. Swollen is what happens to your knee or elbow when you slam…swollen is what happens to your blood pressure when you are skating away from Johnny Law. Swollen is what you want to do to your girlfriend but she just won’t let you. Swollen is what happens to your heart when that same girl breaks it…swollen is that feeling you get at the end of the day when you had a perfect game of skate.” Spencer W.
Science Park?
The Fringe: Cape Town’s Design and Innovation District….
“The Fringe is based on an urban “science park” model, as defined by the International Association of Science Parks; an organisation managed by specialised professionals, whose main aim is to increase the wealth of its community by promoting the culture of innovation and the competitiveness of its associated businesses and knowledge based institutions” Andrew Boraine
The Fringe: Cape Town’s Design and Innovation District….
“An important element of modern day science parks are cafes, bars and other venues for networking and gathering – the area already has many of these: The Field Office, Charlie’s Bakery, Dias Tavern, The Fugard Theatre, the District Six Museum and its Homecoming Centre, ‘38 Special, the Assembly, the Book Lounge and the Kimberley Hotel…Proposals for relevant public space improvements have also been made, in the interests of increasing opportunities and interest in the area” Andrew Boraine
How about a Swollen Park?
satisfaction edge creativity risk community bliss
My car is a wooden plank with four wheels, one speed manual transmission. No seatbelts. No headlights. No air bags.No climate control or power steering, or premium sound system. The suspension sucks, the paint is scratching off, and there is this incessant clacking noise as it rolls down the road. I have to press my foot down every couple of seconds to keep it moving. But its still cool, I guess.

Krotoa - Cape Town’s first hipster ?
“ She herself made wonderful progress with Dutch, and a lot of Portuguese she picked up from our slaves, and can you believe it, I even heard Malay and English words from her mouth. That she would have learned from the young clerks. They liked showing off to her. Some days it is here as if one is walking about in Malacca or Batavia. And when she crosses the courtyard in her sarong and badjoe, everthing jerks to a standstill from the kitchen all the way to the back of the hospital. The East, its pure East. And very intelligent, I tell you.” Dan Sleigh, Islands
