Greetings to all, It is my distinct pleasure to

be a part of this great Recreation & Activities Guide that, through the collaboration of many organizations, brings you and your family many exciting opportunities for the late Spring and Sum-mer months! Within the pages of this guide you will find activities as diverse as walking a cable 35 feet in the air at the Eagle Rock Challenge Course to making

sure that your old dog is learning new tricks through our Basic Dog Obedience instruction! Speaking of your forever best friend, the Mount Vernon Parks and Recreation Department is excited to be fund raising for the first ever City dog park! We are $3,000 away from our goal and breaking ground. If you can help in any way, we would like to hear from you! We are also excited to see the beginning of Phase II of Kiwanis Park break ground for the new Spray Park.

Construction has started and we are hoping for a June opening, just in time for the sun! Our Department strives to provide the best pro-gramming, parks, facilities and open spaces as we can during these difficult economic times. We hope you will spend your summer exploring the community through our parks, pathways and programs. Have a wonderful summer!

FROM THE DESK OF THE DIRECTOR • LARRY M. OTOS, CPRP

This is open to children age 2 to 4, and they must be accompanied by an adult during camp. For those ready to go to camp alone our first level independent pony camp starts with children 4 to 7 years at our Little Bucka-roo Pony Camp. The second level of this camp is called Little Wranglers. For children ages 5-15 years we offer Sibling Horse Camp, Morning Horse Camp, Amy’s Fun Pony Camp, and Trails-N-More Afternoon Horse Camp. For children age 7 to 15 years we offer All-Day Horse Camp from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For older campers we have Overnight Horse Camp for girls ages 9 to 15, and Teen Camp for girls 14 to 19 years with advanced riding skills. With one of the largest equestrian camps, we are proud of our staff and horses. We aim to meet the needs of beginning through advanced riders. Our campers can choose to ride English or western style. A typical day at horse camp includes grooming, saddling, taking riding lessons, playing games on horseback and preparing mounted drills to music. If you would like more information including dates, prices, and camp times: please check out our website at www.comeride.com, or call us to request our printed camp brochure.

For those who want to revel in their own backyard, Skagit County Parks, Recreation, and Fair will have a lot of summer activities to choose from in 2010. Why make a long trek to distant destinations when there are so many events to attend, sites to see, waters to craft, and other activities right here at home? With a little less far-flung touring, we can make Skagit County the most successful “staycation” destination on this side of Mount Liberty Bell. From the wayward Guemes Island to the quaint east county towns such as Lyman and Marblemount, there are mountains to climb and meadows on which to picnic. Although there are too many activities to recommend, I’ll give you three choices from each region of our county. To shake it up, I would recommend those on the east

county come west and those on the west side go east. Those in the middle should do both!

The Montgomery-Duban Headlands and Sharpe Park: These South Fidalgo Parks have astonishing wild-flowered laden rocky bald meadows with expansive views. The northern end of the park allows users the ability to directly access the rocky waterfront shores and enjoy the rich Puget Sound sea life such as Orca Whales, Harbor Seals, Dahl Porpoises, Sea Lions, Predatory Birds, River Otter, and on rare occasions, migrating Gray Whales and Orca Pods; all while immersing oneself in the rich tidal bluffs and crashing waves of Picnic Point.

Skagit County Fair, August 11-14: There is going to be all your favorite local foods, local bands, local farms, and local flavors. Come help us “Bring it All Back Home” by joining us at this summer’s Fair.

Howard Miller Steelhead Park: This Park on the upper reaches of the Wild and Scenic Skagit River has become one of the most popular campgrounds and day-use parks in the northwest. Each site at the park has sweeping views of the glacially nourished Skagit River. Crested mountains ring the lower hinterlands and day hikes abound. Eagles sit knowingly on large limbs and if you’re lucky a Roosevelt Elk may make a dawn excursion along the river’s edge.
