As many of us already know, the Canton Jewish Community Center will close the doors of the building located at 2631 Harvard Ave. NW in the latter part of July. However, the CJCC will continue to operate from offices relocated to Shaaray Torah Synagogue, 432 Thirtieth Street NW.

This necessary step is the result of the economic realities of our community that have driven the Kadima process over the past several years.

Currently, the Jewish community is operating in buildings totaling over 140,000 square feet. This is an unrealistic amount of space for our current and expected population. The board of the CJCC has determined that the continued operation of our Jewish Center building is

no longer fiscally feasible. Some of the Jewish Center programming, in conjunc-

tion with the Jewish Federation, will continue to be offered from their offices in Shaaray Torah Synagogue. We will continue to celebrate our Jewish holidays, Book Fair, the Northeast Ohio Photo Show, Shabbat Under the Stars, and more. Programming will take place at Shaaray Torah Synagogue or Temple Israel.

As we move forward with the Kadima process and begin to realize the goal of a one-campus community, we expect a very bright and dynamic future for our com-munity. It is up to us, the Jewish community, to make our lives rich with Jewish events and programs.

STARK JEWISH NEWS • JUNE/JULY 2010 • www.jewishcanton.org4 SHALIACH

A long time ago there was a forty year old man by the name of Shlomo, who got tired of his meaningless life, so he woke up one day and decided to go talk with God and ask for a new life.

On his way to talk with God, Shlomo met a drought stricken tree and asked it “how s̓ life?” The tree responded “life sucks, Iʼm dying because I canʼt get any water.” “Iʼm going to talk to God, when I see God, I will also tell him about you, I promise.”

Later on his way, our hero met a nice lonely woman seating by a big house. “How s̓ life?” he asked. “Disappointing” she replied. “Iʼm sitting here alone and no guy ever shows up.” “Iʼm going to talk to God, when I see God, I will also tell him about you, I promise.”

Continuing his journey to meet God Almighty, Shlomo ran into a gaunt fox that complained about the fact that he s̓ that skinny because he got almost nothing to eat. “Iʼm going to talk to God, when I see God, I will also tell him about you, I promise.”

Finally after a long excursion, our protagonist got to talk with God. Shlomo told God about all his “tsores” and all about the “tsores” of his new friends he had met on the way. God answered, “Iʼm changing your luck, but, it s̓ up to you to be smart enough to catch it.” In addition to that, God also gave Shlomo a letter to each one of his three new miserable friends.

On his way back home to his wonderful new life, Shlomo saw the tree he met earlier that day and told

The Forty Year Old Idiotit that he spoke with God about its problem and God gave him this letter. The letter said “You canʼt get water, because, there s̓ a big bag of diamonds stuck in your roots blocking the way for the water.” The tree asked Shlomo to get this bag of diamonds out but he refused by saying “Sorry, I got to hurry up. God said he will change my luck, Iʼve got to run and catch it.”

A few hours later, Shlomo saw the woman he met. He told her that he spoke with God about her problem and God gave her this letter. The letter said “The first man that will be willing to marry you, will have my promise that both of us will forever be happy and rich.” “Would you go out with me?” she asked. “Sorry, Iʼve got to hurry up. God said he will change my luck, I got to run and catch it” he replied.

Almost at home, Shlomo sees the fox. He gives him the letter. The fox reads the letter, jumps and bites Shlomo in the neck. A short moment before he loses consciousness, he saw what the letter said – “If the idiot gets to you, eat him”.

Friends, you must understand that we are at the beginning of the summer. The summer will bring heat, humidity, flies, mosquitoes, sun burns, and many more wonderful things, but, it s̓ also a time for new opportunities. The summer is your time to experience, to learn new things, to discover, to explore, to play, to spend quality time with your family on a good vacation, to love, to laugh, to swim, to play ball, and simply live.

When you think about a “change”, think about “change” as the middle of an intersection. The intersection of Opportunity St. and Will Ave. Understand that change will happen when the two roads meet. If you drive along Opportunity St. and donʼt turn on Will Ave. there will be no change. If you drive on Will Ave. and donʼt turn on Opportunity St. there will be no change. It s̓ not enough

to ask for and wish for opportunities or chances to change things, to make your life better. It s̓ not enough to pray to God for a better future and simply exclude yourself from the responsibility of changing your self. Rather, it s̓ up to you to have the will to change and grasp the moment.

You see, in life, we have oppor-tunities, and itʼs up to us to catch them. It is up to us to grasp the moment and take advantage of the opportunities we are given. If someone prays for patience, do you think God gives him patience, or does he give them the opportunity to be patient? If heʼd prayed for courage, is God giving him courage, or the opportunity to be courageous? If someone prays for his family to be closer together, do you think God graces them with warm fuzzy feelings or does he give them the opportunity to get closer together?

Friends, it s̓ up to each and everyone of you to take the bag of diamonds under the tree, to say “yes” to the woman from the story, to grasp the moment, to catch the opportunities, to live your life knowing you at least tried to catch every bone God threw at you and opened the door when an opportunity was knocking.

I want to wish you a wonderful summer time. I wish for you to enjoy your family, your friends. I wish you to finish the summer with tons of new experiences and stories to talk about for years to come. I wish you that this summer, will be one that youʼll remember for the rest of your life, because this summer, is the one you have decided, that no matter how good, fortunate and happy your lives are, you are still going to make them even better. This is the summer that you promised to yourselves, “Iʼm not going to be like that forty year old idiot”.

IPeace of Mind

This month Martha Lottman and Bonnie Manello will be traveling to Israel for the annual meetings of

the Partnership. Why is this necessary you might ask? Because in Israel, we meet our partners who work in so many of the programs that we have been helping along. Because in Israel, volunteers who make things work on the Israeli side can join in the decision making process. Because in Israel, we can go first hand and look at the results “on the ground” of our assistance. This includes everything from a new emergency room in the Western Galilee Hospital, funded in part by Partnership dollars, to the “House on Wheels” where disabled children in wheelchairs come to learn together and spend time together in a nurturing environment.

Going to Israel also means investigating the work of artists who may some day show their work in Canton and elsewhere in the Partnership communities as a follow up to the Israeli Performing Artists Series. Going to Israel means strengthening relationships with the political leaders of Mate Asher and Akko so that they can work with our city on joint programming that is beneficial to both sides.

I wish I was traveling with Bonnie and Martha, and hope to next time. But, so can you if you want to become involved. Just email me if you would like to come to our next planning meeting following the return of our emissaries and hear their reports of the meetings.

AIPAC: A Voice for the U.S. – Israel Relationship

For more than half a century, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee has worked to help make Israel more secure by ensuring that American support remains strong.

Political advocacy is one of the most effective ways in which AIPAC works to accomplish its mission.

AIPAC works to secure vital U.S. for-eign aid for Israel to help ensure Israel remains strong and secure. AIPAC is working to promote strategic coopera-tion between the two nations, to devel-op sound U.S. anti-terrorist policies, to share homeland security techniques and technologies, and to stop rogue nations such as Iran from acquiring weapons of mass destruction.

Creating Citizen AdvocatesThe core of AIPAC s̓ mission is build-

ing a base of citizen advocates who team with our expert staff to educate America s̓ elected officials, policy mak-ers and opinion leaders. But we also engage in many important initiatives to ensure that whatever the future holds, AIPAC will be positioned to effectively promote the U.S.-Israel relationship.

About our OrganizationAIPAC is registered as a domestic

lobby and supported financially by private donations. The organization receives no financial assistance from Israel, from any national organization or any foreign group. AIPAC is not a political action committee. It does not rate, endorse or contribute to candidates. Because it is a lobby, contribu-tions to AIPAC are not tax deductible.

J Street is the political home for pro-Israel, pro-peace Americans.

J Street s̓ mission is two-fold: first, to advocate for urgent American diplomatic leadership to achieve a two-state solution and a broader regional, comprehensive peace and, second, to ensure a broad debate on Israel and the Middle East in national politics and the American Jewish community.

J Street supports diplomatic solutions over military ones, including in Iran; multilateral over unilateral approaches to conflict resolution; and dialogue over con-frontation with a wide range of countries and actors when conflicts do arise.

JStreetPAC is the first political action committee to endorse and raise money for federal candidates based on their sup-

port for Israel and for American policy in the Middle East that promotes security through peace, a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and active diplomacy to address regional conflicts.

Policy

J Street advocates for American poli-cies that, in our view, advance the nation-al interests of the United States, as well as the long-term interests and security of the state of Israel.

Central to our approach is a negoti-ated end to the Arab-Israeli conflict, which we believe must be an American foreign policy priority and can lead to a much-needed new regional security architecture.

Pro-Israel, Pro-PeaceJ Street is the political home for pro-Israel,

pro-peace Americans. J Street unequivo-cally supports the existence of the State of Israel as a democracy and a national home for the Jewish people and believes that the best way to guarantee its future is through the realization of a two-state resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and a comprehensive regional peace.

We share a vision of Israel laid out in its Declaration of Independence – of a country that Jews can always go to be safe and as a thriving democracy that reflects the highest values of the Jewish people: justice, equality, treating your neighbor as you wish to be treated yourself.

The positions of each organization is taken from their individual websites: www.aipac.org and www.jstreet.org

As America s̓ leading pro-Israel lobby, AIPAC works with both Democratic and Republican political leaders to enact public policy that strengthens the vital U.S.- Israel relationship. With the support of its members nationwide, AIPAC has worked with Congress and the Executive Branch on numerous critical initiatives – from securing vital foreign aid for Israel to passing legislation aimed at stopping Iran s̓ illicit nuclear program.

Our son-in-law, Ted Deutch, ran and was elected to the Florida State Senate representing Florida s̓ 30th in 2006.

When Congressman Robert Wexler announced that he was resigning his seat, Ted took the challenge, ran to replace him and with a tremendous amount of work, won the special election on April 13, 2010.

The celebrations began on the evening of election day. Congratulatory phone calls and e-mails from all over the country kept both his and our phone lines busy. His congratulatory phone call from President Obama was a highlight!

With many friends, we left on Wednesday to witness his swearing-in ceremony in Washington, D.C. That evening, some of the family walked to the Capital grounds where we looked in awe at the magnificent Capitol build-ing which would soon become Ted s̓ place of work. (He is maintaining his residence in Boca.)

Saragale and I lived in Washington years ago, and we again marveled at the beauty of the city. The most notice-able changes were the tremendous traffic congestion and the intensified security in many buildings and museums. We needed prior security screening for many of our visits and had to supply our social security numbers, picture ID s̓ and have our names on a prearranged list.

Thursday morning we had a tour of the White House and saw a number of the famous rooms. No cameras or cell phones are allowed in the White House, or in many other venues.

Former shaliach Maya Abarbanel receives ROI grant

Congratulations to our former shaliach, Maya Abarbanel, Executive Director of Parallel Lives, on receiving one of 35 ROI grants for her agency.

ROI stands for “return on investment”, a common business term which refers to achieving a desirable outcome through wise investment. Furthermore, roʼeh in Hebrew alludes to the word Shepherd which in our tradition has always symbolized a position of leadership.

ROI is a global community of young Jewish inno-vators, created as a partnership between the Center for Leadership Initiatives and Taglit-Birthright Israel. The ROI community is a dynamic network engaged in a wide range of projects and initiatives aimed at changing the Jewish World. After a long and rigorous selection process, the grant winners were selected for their diverse, innovative, entrepreneurial and collaborative projects.

Parallel Lives, or in Hebrew – “Zehut leʼChaim”, deals with Jewish Identity as a bridging factor between young Israelis and Diaspora Jewry youth. They bring together combat soldiers from Special Operations Units of the Israel Defense Forces with young Jews from around the world, with the goal of creating a dia-logue and long lasting bonds between them.

The soldiers and Diaspora youth – Jews of the same age living parallel, but very different lives due to the exigencies of life – conduct deep discussions aimed at the enhancement of Jewish identity for both sides, the creation of bonds of friendship, increasing solidarity with Israel within the realm of Diaspora youth, and the creation of awareness as to the Jewish world, amongst the soldiers.

Parallel Lives ̓alumni community aim at strength-ening Jewish identity among young Israeli and Diaspora Jews, who are often at their “non identified” phase of Jewish life, by belonging to a global alumni community, based on a meaningful Mifgash experi-ence they have had in the Parallel Lives program. This innovative project offers a sense of belonging and of meaningful Jewish action, for young adults who do not yet identify with an institutional Jewish structure. For Israeli young adults this offers a unique experience of Jewish community, which is otherwise rare in the Israeli social structure. Together they will create a sustainable community that will generate change, create global network and answer the needs of todayʼs world.

Maya and Lior Abarbanel were shlichim to the Canton and Akron Communities from 2005-2007. They currently live in Rehovet with their son, Elay.

The Journey of a LifetimeRunning for political office – from the family s̓ perspective

Frank J. Weinstock, MD, FACS

After that, our entire group, 115 people (the larg-est single group to witness a swearing-in for a special election) gathered in Ted s̓ new office in the Capitol. Normally, in January, when the entire Congress is sworn in every two years each Congressmen is only allotted one ticket to the event.

A small number of the family escorted Ted to a private office where he signed official docu-ments and Ted and Jill received their official pins designating them as Congressman and spouse. More pictures were taken. We had the opportunity to meet the House Sergeant- At- Arms who, besides overseeing a security force of over 2000 peo-ple, is the person who introduces the President every year immediately before the State of the Union address.

As a group, we were escorted to the

House Gallery where we waited for the ceremony. Interestingly, no one is allowed on the floor unless under the age of 12. This meant that Tedʼs son, Cole, was able to accompany Ted on the floor during the entire ceremony, proudly standing at his fatherʼs side and meeting many of the Representatives. Ted was sworn in on the floor of the House of Representatives with the entire Congress present. He was introduced to the House by the Dean of the Florida delegation, Representative Alcee Hastings. Boyce Invests Additional $10 Million in Israel Bonds

Columbus, OH—Treasurer Kevin L. Boyce announced today that the Ohio Treasury has purchased an additional $10 million in Israel Bonds. These high quality bonds receive an A rating from Standard and Poor s̓ and have never defaulted on payment.

“The Ohio Treasury is making a sound finan-cial investment by purchasing Israel Bonds,” said Treasurer Boyce. “We are proud to support the nation of Israel and we are pleased to be a part of their growth.”

Earnings from these bonds are used by Israel s̓ Finance Ministry to fund important economic projects. Much of Israel s̓ current infra-structure has been supported by these bonds. Joyce Garver Keller, Executive Director of Ohio Jewish Communities, applauded Treasurer Boyce for his continued commitment demonstrated by this recent investment. “This $10 million investment is good for Ohio and good for Israel,” said Keller.

The mission of the Ohio Treasury is to protect and invest state funds while providing innovative financial education and resources, empowering you to make Smart Money Choices.

done by Speaker Nancy Pelosi. After this the entire House stood, faced the Gallery and gave a standing ovation to Jill, Gabriel, Serena, Cole and Tedʼs mother, Jean Deutch of Bethlehem, Pa. Then Ted had one min-ute to address the House. After having been required to resign from his law practice and his Florida Senate position, he was employed again.

Ted and seven of us in the immediate family were invited to Nancy Pelosiʼs office where a private swear-ing-in ceremony was held, in order to take pictures and document the occasion. The Speaker was abso-lutely charming and personable, remembering all the childrenʼs names as well as our own.

Our small group then had lunch in the Memberʼs dining room.

Later in the afternoon, there was a reception at the Library of Congress. Besides many friends from Boca, we had a chance to spend time with family members from around the country.

Due to the large number of people, we separated into Weinstock and Deutch family dinners in the eve-ning. Saragale and I had the chance to entertain the Weinstock family (32), and had a chance to reunite with family members of all ages.

On Friday we went to the Capitol where Tedʼs newly acquired Representative pin took us to the front of the line for a private tour just before the Capitol opened.

A walk around the Mall allowed us to see a little of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. After- ward, seven of us went on a personal tour of the Dome of the Capitol. It was a somewhat scary walk up 365 steps. It was worth it, though, when we saw the magnificent panoramic view encompassing, not only the District, but extending well into Virginia and Maryland.

Saturday morning was occupied with a tour of the Holocaust museum – a first for many of us. It was truly impressive and humbling.

Saturday afternoon ended with the return to reality with an uneventful trip back home, with many unique memories of a truly historic and wonderful event.
