Rev. Fr. Maxim Dias SJPrincipal, St. Joseph’s Evening College .
Rev. Fr. Victor Lobo SJ Principal, St. Joseph’s Evening College.
Thank You
Welcome
Welcome to another edition of the college annals; a year that saw Fr. Victor Lobo SJ, Principal of
St. Josephs Evening College steering the institution with his stout, disciplined, tolerant and sagacious leadership, as the college prepared for NAAC reaccreditation and peer team visit, as well as the Autonomy evaluation committee’s visit.
This year the college bid farewell to Prof. C. Ravishankar (Department of History), Prof. Joy Alex (Department of Economics) and Mr. Arunodhaya Mahanta (office staff). They contributed selflessly to the growth of the institution in various capacities over several decades. The college bows in veneration to these three stalwarts and wishes them well in all their future endeavors.
The College continued to strive as in previous years, for the oppressed, the distressed and the lost; ensuring that these students get every possible opportunity to scale great heights. The Management and staff untiringly ventured to enhance this commitment The academic year ended with the unexpected transfer of Fr. Victor Lobo SJ, as Principal to St. Josephs College. His affection and compassion for the evening college, sharp intellect, astute leadership, discipline, articulation, untiring accessibility and collective decision making stand admirable at all times. We at St. Joseph’s Evening College take this opportunity to congratulate
Fr. Victor Lobo SJ on his new assignment and wish him all the best. Nevertheless, the college will miss his presence.
We congratulate Fr. Maxim Dias SJ on being appointed as the new Principal of SJEC. We wish him all the best and a fruitful stay in the evening college.
During the year, academic work progressed with conviction; many activities were organized collectively and successfully. Three dynamic leaders Fr. Anthony Joseph SJ, Rector, Fr. Victor Lobo SJ, Principal and Prof. Joy Alex, Vice Principal extended solidarity to the activities of the year.
This College Annual is a compendium of what we have undertaken and achieved in the last academic year, and thereby points the way to what rest ahead. We would like to sincerely thank Fr. Victor Lobo SJ and Fr. Maxim Dias SJ for placing trust and giving another opportunity to the Editorial Board to bring out this record. We are also deeply indebted to the student editorial team, consisting of Supriya, Rakshit and Vinod. We invite you to peruse the achievement of our young band and draw inspiration from them just as we have.

The evening college has a special place among the educational institutions in India as it enjoys the special status as one and only autonomous college in the country. Ever since its inception among other objectives and concerns the college has been catering largely to the needs of the students who are economically backward and those students who can’t afford to pursue their studies in the day colleges. The college has been faithful to its objective and has been preparing and training the students to equip themselves with the skills , adequate knowledge and a touch of spiritual, cultural ,emotional and intellectual spheres so that the students are well trained to handle any good tasks that are offered to them and live a life which is exemplary.
The Jesuit education strongly believes in the overall and all round development of its students and it is beautifully expressed in the decree of General Congregation 35; “A thorough and sound intellectual formation includes mastery of basic humanities and scientific discipline through careful and sustained study that is based on competent and well – motivated teaching… In Jesuit education
, particular care is given to the development of the imaginative , the affective , and the creative dimension of each student in all courses of study” The objective of Jesuit education is to assist in the fullest possible development of all the God – given talents of each individual person as a member of the human community”
I am happy to note that the college is moving in the right direction and is offering ample opportunities to all the students to avail of all the facilities so that they can truly learn things pertaining to their subjects and imbibe all the virtues and good qualities to be men and women for others. It is our aim and wish that the students who pass out of our portals truly become the agents and catalyst of change and transformation so that a society based on equality, peace, love and justice may be ushered in.
Rev. Fr. Anthony Joseph SJRector,
St. Joseph’s Institutions, Bangalore.
recTor’s message
I saw a child carrying a light.I asked him where he had brought it from.He put it out, and said:‘Now you tell me where it is gone.’
These lines from the poem “Where it Went” by Hasan of Basra give a picturesque cum symbolic glimpse of St Joseph’s Evening College. Yes, it is a feeling with an admixture of pain and pleasure, sorrow and joy, agony and ecstasy to see the budding youngsters toil day and night to eke out a living, and burn the midnight oil in order achieve their humble life goals. These are the little guiding lamps which will shine over the world, driving away darkness and gloom. Of course, it is a joy to see these young sons and daughters of our motherland blossom and then quietly settle their ways without much noise and din. True to the motto of St Joseph’s Evening College Fide et Labore i.e. Faith and toil, these younglings coalesce faith with toil literatim to effectuate their life-goals. The words of Richard Bach, “Your harshest truths are dreams, and your gentlest dreams are true” are a living testimony in the life of these little men and women at St Joseph’s Evening College. ‘The only
thing that shatters dreams is compromise’, and these have never compromised. For, life has told them nothing, it has shown them everything.
Having climbed certain peaks these enthusiasts, who have tasted life in its both sweet and bitter portions, will descend no more, but spread their wings and fly beyond... For, life the teacher has acquainted them with a triad - foresight, far sight and insight - and knowledge with wisdom, both on the torment seas tossed with the storms of life and on the safe harbors of the tranquil shores.
I draw the curtains on this brief reflection with the words of Richard Bach in his Messiah’s Handbook: “You are a creature of light. From light have you come, to light shall you go, and surrounding you through every step is the light of your infinite being.”

Honourable Chief Guest of this evening, M. Joseph S. Mariraj, Asst. Commissioner, Urban
Infrastructure and Development Financial Corporation, Fr Anthony Joseph SJ, the Rector, Principals of our sister institutions, Rev. Fathers, Rev. Sisters, Respected Members of the Staff, Press and Media Personalities, Parents, Benefactors, Well-wishers, Alumni/ae, ladies and gentlemen and my dear students. A very good evening to you all. I am very happy to present this 43rd Annual College Report.
When he had been asked how far educated men were superior to those uneducated, Aristotle had answered, “As much as the living are to the dead.”
Ever since its inception, this temple of learning has constantly been striving to reach greater heights of excellence and glory in tune to the motto of the Jesuit Order - “Ad Majorem Dei Glorium” or For the greater glory of God.A blind man had asked Swami Vivekananda, “Can there be anything worse than losing eyesight?”
To which Swami Vivekananda had replied, “Yes, losing your VISION.”
Yes, here at St Joseph’s Evening College our vision is “Empowering youth through excellence in education to shape a better future for humankind.” Guided by the motto “Fide et Labore” (Faith and Labour) we train men and women for others, who are academically accomplished, emotionally balanced, morally upright, socially responsible, ecologically sensitive and professionally dedicated, so that they become a powerful force for the transformation of society.
An educational institution is the corpus of a vision incarnate. For, it invokes alchemy of a great vision. Moreover, it must also instill vision into generations of learners who tread its sacred portals, invigorating life and spirit into their mortal selves. Hence every learner must be imbued with a vision as high as the farthest sky, as profound as the deepest ocean and as wide as the endless universe, thus inspire to widen one’s horizons, deepen one’s faith and broaden one’s perception.

“I would give all the wealth of the world, and all the deeds of all the heroes, for one true vision” were the words of Henry David Thoreau. Yes, St Joseph’s Evening College is born with and lives for such a great VISION…
The goal of education we impart is the integral formation of our students helping them to become men and women for others. By striving for excellence in learning, creative and practical thinking, and co-operative leadership, we stress both academic excellence and human excellence, inspired by genuine religious and moral values, and commitment to the cause of justice, with a practical awareness of the prevailing social conditions. Thus a Josephite • lives with a commitment for justice• acts from a strong self-concept• thinks critically and creatively• communicates effectively• exercises power appropriately• cultivates a positive sense of direction and evokes hope
The purpose of such education is the ‘overall development of personality’ of every student who passes through the portals of this College, in order to make him/her better citizen of the city of God and the city of man, inculcating in him/her 3H’s and 4 C’s. The 3 H’s are: • Head - which includes deep intellectual pursuit,• Heart - the affective or the ‘agapeic’ dimension. That is, the sacrificial love,• Hands - service of God realized in and through the service of humanity, especially the last, the l east and the lost. And the 4 C’s are: Competence, Conscience, Compassion and Commitment.

India, A Cashless Society
In the process of completion of the ‘One World Government’, every single citizen is catalogued and registered under the government through retinal scans, finger prints, and ultimately an implantable microchip. In India, right now it is happening to the tune of one million people being processed every 24 hours. India has launched a nationwide programme involving the allocation of UID number (Unique Identification Number) to its 1.2 billion residents. Each of the numbers is associated with the biometric data of the person in whom it is implanted. For this three different information is used- fingerprints, iris scans, and pictures of the face. All the ten digits of the fingers will be recorded, and both eyes will be scanned.
The project will be directed by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). This scheme will prevent identity theft, social welfare frauds. This is also useful for medical support and assistances aimed to help the poor. Fraud and corruption is the biggest problem in India, especially in relation to the corrupt politicians and bureaucrats who fill welfare rolls with fake names and make use of the money for themselves. This new data mining effort by the Indian Government will develop an electronic surveillance grid capable of tracking, tracing and recording every single movement and communication of every single citizen within the nation and also outside its borders. Major banks,

state/local governments, educational institutions, hospitals, super markets, etc., are planning to use the UIDAI for payment and accessibility of the data. This scheme focuses on the technological development and high standards of living. The alternative methods are ruled out and kept outside the box, and this has become mandatory which was once a choice.
As soon as Indian banks, businesses, and government social service offices begin to require identification using the UID through RFID chips (Radio Frequency Identification). The race will be towards the cashless society, which is the ‘ultimate goal’. All vendors will have a biometric reader and citizens will pay for the things with a scan of the chips implanted. All the buying and selling will be done through this chip including water and a bag of rice. All the essentials of mankind- food, clothing, shelter and education revolve around the implantation of the chip. Will people accept it due to technological development or reject it due to confidentiality of their private details?

A DREAM IS COMING TRUE
“Make your Old Students’ Association the backbone of St. Joseph’s Evening College,’’ thundered the then Principal Rev. Fr. L.A. Rasquinha, S.J. while addressing us in the late 1970s. He was the one who encouraged us to form the association. For us, the newly graduated students, it was an uphill task. As a result, it remained as a dream. Years rolled by.March 8, 2015 Sunday – Annual Alumni Meet at the college premises. The hall was jam packed. Various programmes from morning to night. Event after event. Eyes could not believe. Angels were singing and dancing, eloquent speakers reminiscing Cicero to Edmund Burke. Everywhere there was joy, happiness and enthusiasm. Students were full of promises. Agenda for the year was announced amidst applause.
May 9, 2015 Saturday election was held. A versatile genius John Shanth Kumar Joseph was unanimously elected as President with a talented team of eight intellectuals full of zeal and passion to assist him as office bearers in all his endeavours. For guidance and support, the Rector, present Principal Fr. Maxiam Dias, S.J. who has recently taken charge from Fr. Victor Lobo S.J. and Vice-Principal Joy Alex are always there for the asking, the task of
making Alumni as the backbone of our college will be accomplished. Yes, the long cherished dream is being realized.

Meal was cooked and served by our own students. We shared the little gifts, we could with them. The day was overwhelming and unforgettable for all. The sad part of our visit is the children holding on to us and did not allow us to leave, it culminated in a tearful farewell. Fr. AdvertirThere was a time when products would sell themselves and the best form of advertisement was by ‘Word Of Mouth’ - free and reliable. Unfortunately, today it is all about advertisement and visibility. Advertisement represents the 4th ‘P’of the Marketing Mix (as advertisement is a part of promotion).
The Advertisement industry started from zero and grew to a multi-million dollar one. The birth of this
industry took place back in the 19th century London, with the work of Thomas J. Barratt, also known as “the father of modern advertising”. Working for the Pears Soap Company, Barratt created an effective advertising campaign for the company products, which involved the use of targeted slogans, images and phrases. One of his slogans, “Good morning”. Have you used Pears’ soap?” was famous back in his day and well into the 20th century. Under Barratt’s guidance, Pears Soap became the world’s first legally registered brand.
Today, the Indian advertising industry has evolved from being a small-scale business to a full-fledged industry. It has emerged as one of the major industry. Indian advertising industry, in a short span of time, has carved a niche for itself and placed itself on the global map. Indian advertising Industry which has an estimated value of Rs.13,200 crore has made jaws drop and eyeballs roll with some astonishing pieces of work that it has produced in the recent past.
Advertisements usually amaze people with their creativity and presentation, whereas some are just horrible in the depiction of their ideas. However, advertising media includes wall paintings, billboards, street furniture components, printed flyers, and rack cards, radio, cinema ,and television adverts, web banners, mobile telephone screens, shopping carts, web popups, skywriting, bus stop benches, human billboards, magazines, newspapers, town criers, sides of buses, banners attached to or on the sides of airplanes, in-flight advertisements (on seatback tray tables or overhead storage bins), taxicab doors, roof mounts and passenger screens, musical stage shows, subway platforms and trains, elastic bands on disposable diapers, doors of bathroom stalls, stickers on apples in supermarkets, shopping cart handles, the opening section of streaming audio and video, posters, the backs of event tickets, supermarket receipts – name it and it’s there!
Today almost everything has an advertisement on them and everything is advertised. As quoted by Mark Twain, “many a small thing has been made large by the right kind of advertising”.

Hill Ranger0 hill ranger, the conqueror of the forest.Walking all by self, holding nature the dearestOut in the open sky, out there to witnessThe hymns of nature, in the wild with redness Moving from one hill to another,As long as the signs are clear, the rest I will not bother. How many life must I live, before I can measureThis egoistic human self, naked against nature
O hill ranger, take me with youI want to witness the morning sun in the sparkling dew.Away from home, inside the larger homeFree from this concrete confinement & the conditioning of the spying droneIn the lap of nature where we all belongTake me with you & show me my home.

The little children burntheir eyes in the darkness of the night, to bring Diwali to light, are they destined for this plight? They can’t go to schoolthey know no light. They toil for someone else’s light. Can that light direct our pathsmaking it bright? Should we put to test their endurance?Answer yet to know Ignorance or arrogance?

The Future of BusinessBusiness is a very dynamic entity. The businesses of the past have seen radical changes with the advent of the modern civilization. Today we do not have the traditional methods of human intensive production.
This has been overcome by the mechanized methods of production. The future of the corporate world is expected to change with more intensity if not less. As the primary principle of the corporate society is the survival of the fittest, it is important that we understand this future of change.
We live in a fast-changing society. Expectations of what businesses can do and should do are changing as well. Companies are embracing novel approaches for their shareholders as well as society. Corporate Citizenship has identified four mega-trends that we believe are likely to shape the future of business over the coming decade:1. “CRUNCH” – rising demand and limited supplies means that it’s crunch time for key resources such as energy, food and water. Sustainable business models are becoming a value-added imperative.
2. “FRAGMENT” – traditional power structures are breaking down as government dominance gives way to diverse new actors including social enterprises, not-for-profits, corporations and engaged citizens. Businesses of the future will embrace this fragmentation and play their part in delivering society’s big goals.
3. “CONNECT” – new digital platforms allow people to share information instantaneously. Real-time exchanges amongst billions of people is fast becoming a reality. Privacy and security concerns will accelerate and novel forms of scrutiny will mean that companies are no longer able to hide from demands for transparency.
4. “RE-BALANCE”– New nations are growing in economic, political and cultural power. Massive opportunities are arising to meet the social, environmental and economic needs in these markets. Business in the coming decade will emerge from, engage with and be shaped by the ideological influences of countries like Indonesia, Brazil, Turkey, India and China.
The four mega-trends each present a strategic challenge to businesses. Business of the future should display acute importance to involve itself actively in all the above trends to be the ‘best survivor’.

Laudato Si, Pope Francis’ Encyclical on the Environment
Laudato Si means “Praise be to you” which is the first line of a canticle (hymn) by St. Francis that praises God and all his creation. Laudato Si is Pope Francis’ Encyclical on environment or more formally – On Care for Our Common Home.
It is a worldwide wake up call to help humanity understand the destruction that human being is rendering to environment and people at large. It looks at not only a person’s effect on environment but also the many philosophical, theological, and cultural causes that threaten the relationship of human being to nature in various circumstances. It is a document in many ways a epitome of Pope Francis. It presents Gospel truth and it provides a challenge for every believer (and non-believers too). Pope Francis states that the goal of the document is to enter into dialogue with all people about our common home and to shape the future of our planet.

The College AnthemRing out the battle call of duty!
Unfurl the flag of Faith and Toil!We deem our soul’s eternal beauty.A life-long Victor’s worthy spoil.
A thousand such are proudly gone before us.To win and spread our College’s renown;
‘tis ours to swell with our voices the chorusAnd with our deeds enrich her crown.
ChorusFaith and Toil! Conquerless alliance
Wherein we clasp human hands unto God’s!In His control find we true self-reliance;My hand and God’s what’er the odds ~My hand and God’s what’er the odds ~
My hand and God’sEvil’s onset hold in defiance!
