The best thing about thebeing in the Seaway Cruisersis simply the fun of it.However, the SeawayCruisersdefine fun in termsof shows, events and drivingclassic cars. Fun.to us. isnotbreaking the law or actinglike an idiot.

The Seaway Cruisershave agood reputation with thearea's law enforcementagencies, and it's notsomething we are willing topart with. Almost all of ourmembers respect thisphilosophy.

Recently, however, severalCruisers had chance towitness a fellow membershowing off - squealing histires, slamming the pedal tothe floor and in generalacting like his engine wasdestined to heaven.Obviously, people who actthis way are not needed inthe club.

Therefore, to prevent thistype of occurrence in thefuture, you'll find the officialbylaws of the SeawayCruisersClassic Car Club inthe listthat follows.

Bylaws End Note

To 99% of the SeawayCruisers, the list od bylawswill have very little impact -these bylaws are a naturalpart of their respect for theclub and the hobby. To theremaining 1%, however, these rules will carry weight -any offenses which arereported by any clubmember will carry the notedpenalty.

After reading this, you likelyhave one feeling or another:"good" or "the board ofofficers are idiots." If it's"good" read on, and forgetyou read this altogether;you're most likely "good" outof instinct: If you're the otherhalf. thank you. And readthis column again.

August 3, 1991

Congratulations to DaveReynolds, Mark Snider andKelly Tiernan for the greatafternoon of entertolnrnentlMembers of the SeawayCruisers enjoyed atWaddington Homecoming'sannual display, and alsotook in the craft show andchicken barbecue. Theweather was *hot*, buteveryone's car made itthrough the parade withouta hassle.

Well, maybe a slight hassle -you see some horses wentahead of the cars. Needlessto say, they left presentsbehind for Dale Gonio,Gene Wright, Tom Sawyerand others. Despite thehorse droppings, it was agreat afternoon for all.

The highlight of the carclub's afternoon was theofficial unveiling of MarkSnider'scar. For quite sometime, Mark has been lookingfor a 1961car - as long as itwas a '61, it didn't matterwhat it was. He ended upwith a 1961 FordThunderbird. It's a gorgeoushot red, and looksabsolutely wonderful I

Seaway Festival

Events

Seaway Festivalweek was abusy one for the Cruisers.Three separate events tookplace, and for the mostpart, everything was a blast.

The Festival began for theCruiserswith a sock hop anddisplay in Library Park.Approximately 20 Cruisersand their classic cars werepresent. Music from the 50'sand 60's rang out across thefield while Cruisers Ron andSue jitterbugged their wayto fame and fortune. Randyand Shawn Sawyer, meanwhile, sat around andmade fun of Brenda's food(okay, so it was grosslyovercooked).Unfortunately, the show wastarnished by vandals who"keyed" and scratched BrianDezell's 1968GTO and Doug& Sally Hazelton's 1955Chevrolet.

The Seaway Festival Parade, thankfully, went muchbetter. Cars were placedthroughout the parade, andthe audience enjoyed eachand every one of them. Many senior citizensfrequently commented "Iremember when ..." as theoldest cars in the clubpassed. The parade, as allCruisersknow, isone heck of

(Festival... continued)

a route... almost two mileslong at five miles an hour. All members cameprepared however, and theparade went extremely well.

There was, however, oneminor exception. RobinRamm's 1959Cadillac died. The extra cooling fan sheput in got hostile and put apinhole leak in her radiator. As Robin and I (Brenda)cruised down the streettoward the reviewing stand, there were moments when I r I.

worried weather or not she \ i

would take out a Chevette ~to make herself feel better. ~I

The Caddy wasn't able tomake the parade, but atleast we became part ofthe dignitaries (and that, Iassure you was hilariouslyfunny). Anyway, after theparade, all the Cruiserswentout to Dale and BettyGonio's for a picnic, a boatride and a bit of swimming.

Overall, it was a greatweekend. Let's hope nextyear's Seaway Festival is justas greatl

Ode To Classic Cars .

Cruisers' Cars Damaged

It'sbeen a great summer forthe Cruisers, but regrettably,it winds to a close on a sadnote. The week after theSeaway Festival, twovandals decided to go joyriding in two of Bob Layng'sclassic cars: a . 1970Mustang and a 1968 GTO.The cars were stored atBob's businessbehind metaldoors. These doors weresubsequently bashed downwith the cars. Needless tosay, the cars sufferedextensive damage to theirbodies, but the motors areokay. Adding insult to injury, however, the vandals leftthe Mustang in Bob's frontyard. Hisson Robert, one hisway to Syracuse, discoveredthe car. Later that morning,he also discovered the GTOcruising down the road;Great driving and a lot ofheart helped Robert tocatch the GTO. Thevandalswere eventuallyapprehended, and arecurrently awaitingprosecution.

Tom Sawyer's 1966 Bel Airalso suffered extensive.damage recently. Whiletraveling down Route 37,Tom watched the car

(Damage ... continued)

before him swerve, butdidn't have time to get outof the way - he thought itwas a Styrofoam cooler - hethought he could go over it.But he couldn't. It wasapproximately a 50-poundsalt block. Tom's radiatorand water. PLJmp weretrashed, and there's possibleframe damage.

Hopefully, Tom and Bob canget their cars back toperfection. Both membershave shown extensively thissummer and their cars arefavorite crowd pleasers. If·anyone has any knowledgeof any parts available forany of these cars, please letany club officer know. Bestof luck to both of them.

Black's motoring credits arenumerous. He created at500 cubic inch, all aluminumhemispherical block whichpaved the way for Chrysler'sHemi engine. He was alsorenowned Greer-Black-Prudhomme Top Fueler dragracer which raced in the1960's.

~IRestoration Tip #3

Krylon produces anotherpaint that's useful torestorers. When you'verefinished the metal underyour hood, spray non-heated parts with KrylonDullFinishClear Coat. The partswill not shine like other clearcoats, so they will retain atrue look. However, thepaint will stop them fromrusting, and will allow themto be cleaned eostv,

Winning Isn't Everythingby Robin Ramm

This sounds like a old cliche, but it is true in more thansports. There are so manythings that this applies to,including car shows. Somany people think that Ifthey go to a show andcome home emptyhanded, that they have lost.Yet, it is all in what you makeof it. Think of it this way ...how many new people doyou meet at these events, how many parts do you findthrough the connectionsyou make, isn't it nice to getout in the fresh air instead ofsitting home in front of theboob tube? You have toenjoy the time you have inthe summer, and whatbetter way is there than togo to the shows or displaysand sit and listen to thecomments on your vehicle (Ihad one of those when Igraduated from high school,or I got my first speedingtickets driving one of those). When you come away witha dash plaque, and. a newacquaintance, you havereally won more that yourealize. You can collectboth forever', and theymean so much more that atrophy that collects dust. Iknow. Having been tomany shows, I value thefriends I've made more thanany trophy I have or will everhave.

Weekend Wrench Widow'sCorner

by Brenda Garno

Last year at the Waddingtondisplay, I first met up with theSeaway Cruisers. I rememberRobin yelling, "Here comesKyle," as a black and redstation wagon pulled in. I alsoremember Sally Hughto's pinktruck and Tom Sawyer's 1966Bel Air before he detailed it sowell. Brian Dezell's GTO wasthere too, and I recall asking

(WIdow's continued)

him dozens of questions aboutit. It was that day, a year ago, that Chrisand Ijoined the club.At the time we had two cars, a'70 Chevelle (which we havesince sold) and a '72 Buick(which was my daily driver). Now we own a lot of oldercars, but none really qualifiesas "classic" yet. Still, withouteven a car to show, thissummer has been quite anenjoyable one... and for that, Ihave to thank the Cruisers. Forstarters, I've met so manypeople through the club that Ican't even remember all thenames. Secondly, the Cruisershave also helped my career (Iam a writer). As I look abovemy desk to the chart where I list"Stuff to Write" all but threearticles have to do with cars, the club or people In the club. And, thankfully, a goodpercentage of the articles arewritten for cold cash. Formanyof my writing jobs, I owe muchthanks to Robin Ramm whoconstantly tells people, "Yeah, Iknow someone who could dothat for you,' and to othermembers of the Cruiserssuchas Dave and MaryHebert,Butch Deon, Steve Deon, WaltWelch, Tom Sawyer, BrianDezell,Dave ReynOldsand PaulEllis who took the time toanswer my questions aboutcars, engines and the hobby Ingeneral. Because of theSeaway Cruisers, I'm now

writing a monthly column forthe a local paper on classics, and Ford Buyer's Guide IsInterested In the story I'vewritten on Mary & Dave Hebert(I promise,Hebert's,you'll see itbefore they print It). I neverwould have imagined that I'dget so much out of a car club:friends, fun and advancementIn my career. So It soundstockv. but it has happened. And to every member of theCruisers, thank you.

The Hankin'sPlymouth

Since leaving the dealer'slot in 1950, this two-doorPlymouth Sedan DeLuxhasstayed in and served theHankin's family for over 40years. Bob Hankins, theclassic's new owner, is amember of the SeawayCruisersClassicCar Club.

Bob's grandfather, MorrisonT. Hankins originallypurchased the car in 1950.He, in turn, passed it on tohis son, Samuel M. Hankins,in 1960. Bob is the proudowner in 1991. Havingbeen through threegenerations of the Hankinsfamily, the car holds manymemories for them.Certainly, there are more tocome for this generationand, with perseverance, the next.

The Plymouth has 37,000actual miles on it, andaccording to Bob, "showsit." But you'd never know itfrom the photo.

We look forward to seeingthis beauty restored, hopefully in time for the1992season.
