Studying in theSixth FormWhen you decide to join the Sixth Form, you’re making an active choice to take control of your education and continue your studies. You’ll have more freedom to manage your own time and workload, but your teachers will be on-hand to help you at all times if you need them.

During your time in the Sixth Form, you may have the opportunity to participate in the Community Service programme that aims to provide help and support to organisations in the local community.

Whilst undertaking this programme, you will regularly visit a place of work and really become involved in its operation - you won’t just sit and watch! This is a great chance to get some work experience and really make a difference in the local community.

Sixth Form Life

LEISURE PROGRAMME

The Leisure programme encourages a healthy, active lifestyle and we would recommend that all our students partake in one or more of the activities and accredited courses available. A range of timetabled and extra curricular sessions run throughout the week and allow you to participate in sport and exercise for fun and/or at competition level.

In the Sixth Form we work really hard but we play hard too! We’ve got loads of activities and events for you to get involved in, so why not give it a go?

DEBATING SOCIETY

The Debating Society is a great way to develop your debating skills and have fun! There are fortnightly debates, which include staff, students and outside speakers. Skills gained in The Debating Society are easily transferable into University studies and employment, so it’s a great addition to any University application or CV.

World Challenge is a once in a lifetime experience of organising and undertaking volunteering abroad.

In the summer of 2010, after 18 months of fundraising and preparation, a team of 18 Sixth Formers embarked on a 3 week ‘World Challenge’ expedition to Tanzania.

The expedition included:

The whole expedition was planned and organised by Sixth Form students. They planned the itinerary, booked accommodation and transport, shopped for food and even cooked the meals! It was a fantastic experience for the whole team, not only did they discover a lot about themselves, they have taken home many lasting memories of a truly unforgettable experience. A new team are currently preparing for a three week expedition to Nicaragua in July 2012.

WORLD CHALLENGE

The Young Enterprise Programme is an international scheme that gives you the opportunity to work in a team to actually set up and run your own business.

Not only does this scheme give you the chance to experience running a business first hand, you will also have the option to sit the Young Enterprise Exam, which is now a level 3 qualification that gains you valuable UCAS points. Young Enterprise is also recognised by many Universities and employers, who acknowledge the entrepreneurial skills students gain from the scheme.

The de Ferrers Academy is one of the most successful schools in the area for Young Enterprise achievements. In 2010, a team of students represented the West Midlands in the national final at the Hilton Hotel in London. So, if you want to be the next Sir Alan Sugar or Dragon in the Den this is the programme for you!

YOUNG ENTERPRISE FUNDRAISING

Our students have put on some great fundraising events and raised lots of money for local and national charities. If you want to help make a difference, why not take part in a sponsored event or help distribute Harvest and Christmas parcels in the local area?

We’re always looking for new ways to raise money for charity and help out the local community. If you have a new idea to put forward, let us know and we’ll help you make it happen.

APPLICATION DEADLINES

If you would like to join The de Ferrers Academy Sixth Form, please apply between November and January during Year 11 to ensure your application is given the best opportunity of success.

You can download the Sixth Form application form at: www.deferrers.com or you can come into the Academy and collect one from reception. All students should return the completed application form to us by 31st January 2012 at the latest to ensure your application is received and reviewed in time.

EXTERNAL STUDENTS

If you’re not currently a student at The de Ferrers Academy, but you think you would like to join our highly successful Sixth Form, we’ll be happy to accept your application.

Each year we are delighted to welcome a number of students from other schools who choose to join our Sixth Form. The criteria will be the same as for internal candidates (set out in the table above).

2012 ADMISSIONS

To join the Sixth Form, you will need to achieve at least 5 A* - C passes at GCSE, including English and Maths.

We encourage students who gain 8 A*- C grades at GCSE to follow our Baccalaureate route as this best prepares them for applying to and studying at University. Those aiming to enter Universities must remember that GCSE passes in English and Mathematics are needed as a basic matriculation requirement.

Courses Available We have a wide variety of academic and vocational subjects available for you to choose from. You can choose up to 5 subjects at AS Level, depending on which route you follow, and will carry 3-5 subjects forward into A2 Level.

Specific course information can be found on the course digest sheets, which are available from the Academy reception, website or from the relevant member of teaching staff.

It is our priority to ensure you’re happy with your final subject choices and feel that they are right for you. Although we will do our best to accommodate all your subject choices, sometimes it may not be possible to timetable all subject combinations that you request. If this issue arises, we’ll ask you to choose another subject and provide you with the advice and support you need.

WHY STUDY THIS COURSE?●● If you wish to follow a creative course that combines

practical and intellectual skills●● You want to specialise in the art and design field

ASThe course comprises of two units:

●● Portfolio: Developed over the year through a range of experimental work and major project

●● Controlled assignment

You will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of materials and techniques including:

Most students choose to specialise in Fine Art, however there is opportunity for selecting pathways in Art, Craft, Design, Textiles and 3D. During the course you will also study and analyse relevant artists and designers in your chosen pathway.

A2At A2, you will be expected to exercise a greater degree of independence and decision-making in your approach to study.The course builds upon the knowledge gained at AS and is made up of two units, designed to further develop your intellectual and practical skills: Personal Investigation: This is a practical piece, supported by a written investigation of 1000-3000 words. You will be expected to choose a suitable topic in consultation with your tutor.

A2 controlled assignment

Throughout both years of the course you will be encouraged, and given the opportunity, to visit a range of galleries and exhibitions so you can see and study original works of art.

ASAssessment comprises of a portfolio unit and an examined unit, which have a 50/50 weighting. The examined unit comprises of pre-released questions in which you select one and respond to prior to the exam session. This is a 5hr controlled piece that is then extended into completion within the exam period.

A2Assessment comprises of a portfolio unit supported with a written essay and an examined unit, which have a 50/50 weighting. The examined unit comprises of pre-released questions in which you select one and respond to prior to the exam session. This concludes in a 15hr final piece conducted at the end of the exam period.

ASThe work builds upon the material at GCSE to develop a deeper understanding of basic life processes and how our activities are influencing our health and the wider environment. An essential theme throughout is ‘How Science Works’.

Unit 1: Topic 1: Lifestyle, Health and Risk Topic 2: Genes and Health

Unit 2: Topic 3: The Voice of the Genome Topic 4: Biodiversity and Natural Resources

Unit 3: Practical Biology and Research Skills A written report of 1500-2000 words of a visit to a site of biological interest or report of biological topic.

There is also a visit to an area of biological interest in AS level.

A2A2 develops and extends work at AS especially ‘How Science Works’, giving more relevance to science in society.

ASUnit 1: Developing New Business Ideas

This unit covers the characteristics you would need in order to be successful in business and how new or existing businesses generate their product or service ideas and test them through market research. You will consider the competition in the market, the economic climate, how the business might be financed and how much revenue the idea might generate.

Unit 2: Business Economics

This unit considers the market that the business may be operating in, how competition in the market and macroeconomic change is likely to affect it and how businesses can seek to minimise uncertainty through their actions.

A2Unit 3: International Business

This unit provides an introduction to the world of international business and explores issues that a company trading internationally would have to consider.

Unit 4: The Wider Economic Environment and Business

During this unit, you will consider why certain markets fail, how government decision-making affects the economy and markets in which companies operate and the income and welfare of private individuals. By the end of this unit, you will be able to assess why government economic policy can succeed or fail and why regulation of some markets is necessary.

WHY STUDY THIS COURSE?This course will teach you to:

●● Understand and apply the language of reasoning and the different patterns of reasoning

●● Recognise and evaluate special kinds of reasoning●● Judge the credibility of sources●● Assess arguments ●● Develop and present relevant arguments●● Recognise and apply basic logical ideas

Critical thinking is also the best preparation for aptitude tests for Oxbridge, Law and Medicine. It is a must for those students considering a career in Law, Media or anybody who likes to argue!

ASAt both AS and A2, Critical Thinking teaches practical thinking skills and brings together thinking and arguing in a critical and logical way. The course provides you with a framework that can be applied to a range of materials, situations, problems and issues and the skills learnt in Critical Thinking are easily applied to your other AS/A2 courses.

You will develop a knowledge and understanding of a wide range of materials and processes used in the field of design and technology. You will also learn about industrial and commercial practices and the importance of quality checks and the health and safety issues that have to be considered at all times.

Design & Technology in Practice

You will produce a portfolio, which will demonstrate evidence of your creative, technical and practical skills through a series of product investigation, design and manufacturing activities.

This section will cover:

A2Design & Manufacture

You will develop knowledge and understanding of a range of modern design and manufacturing practices and contemporary design issues. In addition, you will acquire a good knowledge of the ICT, systems and control technology in the design and manufacture of products. You will also study the importance of the contributions of designers from the past, which may provide inspiration for future design.

Design & Making Practice

You will identify a client for which you must design and make a 3D model for a single major coursework project. You will need to regularly liaise with your client to develop a commercial product.

WHY STUDY THIS COURSE?●● If you want to study textiles, fashion or design

in Higher Education●● If you’re interested in a career in design

You will be encouraged to take a broad view of design and technology and to develop your capacity to design and make products within the exciting world of fibres, fabrics and fashion.

ASYou will work with a wide variety of fabrics and components used in the design and making of textile products, gaining an understanding of industrial and commercial practices within the area of design and manufacture.

Unit 1 will cover:
