O M S We, the Roman Catholic churches of Holy Rosary,

spread God's love, through our actions and words, strive to bring into an intimate relationship with Jesus all those

living in North Central Washington County.

Dear Sisters and Brothers, As of July 1, 2020, we are now officially the Parish of

Saint Oscar Romero. It has been a challenging few months leading up to the beginning of our new parish, but with the grace of God, we will be able to accomplish great things. It is important for us to understand the difference between a parish and a church. A parish is a geographical area and a church is a building in that geographical area. The geographical area of the new Saint Oscar Romero Parish is the North Central part of Washington County, including the boroughs of Canonsburg and Houston and the townships of Cecil, Chartiers, North Strabane, South Strabane and parts of Peters. Our parish is now made up of the three churches of Holy Rosary, Miraculous Medal and Saint Patrick. These facilities will serve the worship, ministerial and programmatic needs of our parish. We are blessed to continue to offer the Holy Mass and other ministries at these churches.

Because of the Covid-19 Pandemic, we had to postpone a number of important events including the Sacraments of Initiation of Adults, as well as the Sacrament of Confirmation and a Baccalaureate Mass for our graduating seniors. I am pleased to announce that we will be celebrating the Sacraments of Initiation of Adults on Sunday, July 26 at the 11 a.m. Mass at Saint Patrick Church for the English-speaking new members of our Faith and on that same Sunday at the 1 p.m. Mass at Miraculous Medal Church for the Spanish-speaking new members of our Faith.

We will be celebrating Baccalaureate Masses for our graduating seniors on Sunday, Aug. 2 at 9 a.m. at Holy

F C ’ C Rosary Church, 10 a.m. at Miraculous Medal Church and 11 a.m. at Saint Patrick Church. Finally, we will be celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation for our candidates on three different evenings on Monday, Aug. 3, Wednesday, Aug. 10 and Thursday, Aug. 20 -- all at 7 p.m. at Saint Patrick Church.

This is a great way to inaugurate the beginning of our new parish with these celebrations for our youth and young adults. It will be the mission of our new parish to find innovative ways to share our Catholic Faith with the generations to come and to learn from the example and witness of Saint Oscar Romero. May we benefit from his intercession as we continue to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.

In Christ’s love, Father Carmen

W S O R ? Born in 1917 in El Salvador, Oscar Arnulfo Romero was ordained a priest in 1942 and worked 35 years as pastor, administrator and journalist. In February 1977, Fr. Romero became archbishop of San Salvador. The following month, his friend and fellow priest, Rutilio Grande was murdered.

Romero saw that the people in power in his country were violent men. The wealthy families supported this violent government.

During this time, the poor people suffered the most. Romero spoke out against the soldiers and the government who were attacking the poor. Romero believed that the church needed to work to change the government, because the government was going against the teachings of Jesus. Saint Romero used his sermons to call for peace; he was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1979. The following year, he was shot and killed while celebrating Mass.

On Feb. 3, 2015, Pope Francis authorized a decree recognizing Oscar Romero as a martyr for the faith. His beatification took place in San Salvador on May 23, 2015. He was canonized on Oct. 14, 2018.

Visit our website to watch a video about this amazing priest who did so much for the poor of his country.

S B Since our brothers and sisters who are high risk for

contracting COVID-19 need to stay home for their safety, we have found that our Welcome Ministry needs assistance from our younger and lower risk parishioners. We are asking that if you are in the low risk category, that you consider being a greeter, ushers, and/or light cleaner. Deacon Tony is having a Zoom meeting where we will go over the responsibilities for this ministry. Please contact Deacon Tony at [email protected] to sign up for the meeting. We ask you to prayerfully consider if God is calling you to serve our new parish in this manner.

P R H Wake me up Lord so that the evil of racism finds no home within me. Keep watch over my heart Lord and remove from me any barriers to your grace. Fill my spirit Lord so that I may give services of justice and peace. Clear my mind Lord and use it for your glory. And finally, remind me Lord that you said, “Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called children of God.” Amen.

(Temi spirituali, Biblioteca Francescana, Milán 1967, 281-282; cf. If you receive a text apparently from a member of the staff, often claiming to come from Father Carmen, asking for you to reply, or to send gift cards, but the phone number doesn’t match that staff member’s phone number on the back of the bulletin, it is a scam. Block that number and delete that text conversation. You will know it’s not from Father Carmen if it is signed something like: “...Rev. Carmen D’Amico”. He doesn’t sign texts that way.

C Confirmations will be on the following dates:

Monday, August 3 Wednesday, August 12 Thursday, August 20

For all three dates, Confirmation will begin at 7:00 p.m. at St. Patrick Church and will not include Mass. To comply with CDC and diocesan guidelines, attendance is limited so please let us know which date you would prefer. If you’re reading this online, click here to submit your preference. Or email Sean at [email protected].

C S D C 19 Until we return to normal collections at all Masses,

these are two options for you to consider to support your parish during these unprecedented times: 1. There will be a basket placed somewhere on or near the

altar during Masses in which to place envelopes. 2. You can either mail or drop off your envelopes in the

mail slot at any of the parish offices. 3. If you have online banking you can send your

contribution using your bank’s bill pay option. Give the bank the church name and address and the bank will send the payment directly to the church.

If you have any questions, please contact the administrative office at 724-745-6560. We are very grateful for your generous support. Please know of our continued prayers for you and for your loved ones.

Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson Oh, to think my morning bowl of Wheaties is filled

with something grown on a field! I marvel when I think of all the steps involved in the notion of “farm to table.” I should never forget, first of all, the labor of farmers that is involved. Same goes for the railroad personnel, and the truckers and the grocery workers that link farm and my breakfast table. Our enemy, the Covid 19 virus, brought that home.

Jesus’ parable got me thinking about all this. I got to wondering just what Jesus intended in telling it. Certainly He is issuing a call to be patient in a world, indeed in His earthbound kingdom, where both saints and sinners are allowed to flourish between now and Judgment Day. His leniency balances His justice.

That mustard seed which comes next and the yeast after that in Matthew’s compilation both teach us something more. When God’s plan is behind some effort, however small, there is a surprising effect on the whole world. May I suggest that there is comfort and peace in this fact?

There is still more, albeit a side effect in all three parables. We get to learn that God is present and active in even the little everyday events in our everyday lives. Poets seem to have a lock on this kind of perception, because they can look at ordinary things with a sense of wonder. That patch of wildflowers spread over the highway median gets missed so easily as we zoom past it over the legal speed limit. Yet we know the poets are right. Somewhere deep inside us is the truth that now and then we all have to stop, literally, and “smell the roses.”

One positive effect of the Covid 19 lockdown is that we are now compelled to stop or at least slow down long enough to take genuine notice of the people, places and

things that make up the content of our lives. That’s what’s real. Any hectic self-imposed agenda is artificial.

There is a parallel here with the subtle spread of God’s peaceable kingdom in the world. His quiet power is always at work, fulfilling His plan for us as well as His whole Church. We just have to notice and marvel. That in turn energizes our hope and maximizes our love. Then we become that “good wheat” that He will gather into His barn.

Michael E. DeBakey, a heart surgeon, once observed: “For me, the solitude of early morning is the most precious time of day. There is a quiet serenity that disappears a few hours later with the hustle and bustle of the multitude. God has granted another day of life, another chance for me to do something worthwhile for humanity.” May I humbly suggest that you follow up such lofty thoughts as his while eating a healthy bowl of Wheaties?

Reading I: Wisdom 12: 13, 16-19 God, being omnipotent, can also be just and merciful. His justice does not exclude His kindness. An uplifting truth for us, coupled with the fact that God desires us to repent of our sins, which adds hope to our belief.

Reading II: Romans 8: 26-27 Through the Spirit, the Christian becomes a child of God, and is thus entitled to the Spirit’s help in living with his weakness.

The Gospel: Matthew 13: 24-43, or 13: 24-30 Here is the first set of parables explicitly about the kingdom of God. He points out the power even of a small movement from God when it affects the whole of a society. Note here too the impartiality of Jesus, with His inclusion of a man and a woman in successive stories.

Eucharistic Adoration is being scheduled for August 7. However, we need to assure that at least two people are signed in for every hour between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. If you wish to attend, you need to contact Mellissa Slagle at [email protected] or 724-809-4935 or Joan Dristas at [email protected] or 412-997-4246. Please do so by August 3. A determination will be made on this date. Thank you.
