ORDER OF WORSHIP JUNE 10, 2018

Gathering for Worship (Please note your attendance by signing the pew register.) Announcements Prelude No. 1 from Six Preludes for Organ Ernest Bloch

*Call to Worship (Psalm 34:1, 3 – New Revised Standard Version) Leader: I will bless the LORD at all times; People: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. L: O magnify the LORD with me, P: and let us exalt his name together.

*Hymn #154 All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name Opening Prayer

God, of your goodness give me yourself; for you are sufficient for me.

I cannot ask anything less, to be worthy of you.

If I were to ask less, I should always be in want.

In you alone do I have all. Amen.

~ Juliana of Norwich, England, 15th cent. (UMH #495) Young People’s Message Meg Baker All children will be invited forward for the Young People’s Message, after which children ages 2-10 will transition to Summer Sunday School classes in Rooms 200 & 203. Pastoral Prayer Rev. Claire Matheny

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Proclamation of the Word

Scripture Reading 1 Samuel 8:4-20 4Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, 5and said to him, “You are old and your sons do not follow in your ways; appoint for us, then, a king to govern us, like other nations.” 6But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to govern us.” Samuel prayed to the LORD, 7and the LORD said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them. 8Just as they have done to me, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so also they are doing to you. 9Now then, listen to their voice; only – you shall solemnly warn them, and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them.” 10So Samuel reported all the words of the LORD to the people who were asking him for a king. 11He said, “These will be the ways of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen, and to run before his chariots; 12and he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and some to plow his ground and to reap his harvest, and to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots. 13He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 14He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive orchards and give them to his courtiers. 15He will take one-tenth of your grain and of your vineyards and give it to his officers and his courtiers. 16He will take your

male and female slaves, and the best of your cattle and donkeys, and put them to his work. 17He will take one-tenth of your flocks, and you shall be his slaves. 18And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves; but the LORD will not answer you in that day.” 19But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; they said, “No! but we are determined to have a king over us, 20so that we also may be like other nations, and that our king may govern us and go out before us and fight our battles.”

Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

O Lord of Hosts, how lovely are Thy dwellings. My soul longs for Thy courts, O Lord. How lovely are Thy dwellings, O Lord of Hosts. My heart and flesh cry out; O Lord, for Thee my heart and flesh cry out.

O blest are they whose hope is forever in Thee, Who praise Thy name, who sing their songs within Thy holy house. O Lord, incline Thine ear; Look down, my spirit longs for Thee. A Sun and Shield is the Lord of Hosts.

O Lord of Hosts, how lovely are Thy dwellings. My soul longs for the courts of the Lord. My soul, it longs for Thee. O Lord, for Thee my heart and flesh cry out. In Thee I trust; look down and hear my prayer. O hear my prayer. O Lord, hear my prayer.

Announcements

Welcome! – If you are a guest today, thank you for worshiping with us! Please sign the pew register and introduce yourself to one of our pastors today. Ushers are available at the back of the Sanctuary to provide large print Bibles, Hymnals, and hearing assistance devices. Helpful volunteers at our Visitors’ Center can assist with other questions. A handicap-accessible restroom with changing table is located past the church office and down the hall. We understand young ones can get wiggly during worship, so if you desire, parents may make use of our nursery for children age 2 and under, or may take children into the Octagon room just off the Narthex where the audio feed of the service can be heard. “Busy bags,” children’s bulletins, and other items are available at the Visitors’ Center desk. Children and Youth, age 2 through grade 12, are invited to attend Sunday School most Sundays during the 10:30 AM worship time; please see below for weekly Sunday School Details. Sunday School Details – Children age 2-10 are encouraged to come to our Summer Sunday School. Today, Sunday June 10, children will begin in the Sanctuary with their families and will transition to classrooms 200 and 203 with their teachers following the Children’s Moment. We will be exploring a brand new “no prep” summer curriculum from Children’s Illustrated Ministries. Children will engage with biblical stories to discover ways we join God at work in the world. Older children and youth will be in worship in the Sanctuary. Here’s how summer at St. Paul’s is shaping up:

• June 10–July 8: Children’s Moments & Summer Sunday School – Each Sunday, children will begin in the Sanctuary with their families at 10:30 AM. Following the Children’s Moment, children ages 2-10 will transition to Summer Sunday School classes in Rooms 200 & 203.

• July 15: Musical Theatre Camp – No Summer Sunday School; all children will be in worship to enjoy the Musical Theatre Camp’s presentation of “It’s Cool in the Furnace,” a musical about Daniel, King Nebuchadnezzar, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

• July 22-September 2: Summer Sunday School – All children ages 2-10 are invited to join the Summer Sunday School classes in Rooms 200 & 203 starting at 10:30 AM.

Christian Educators Recognition – As another school year comes to a close, St. Paul’s wishes to express its appreciation for all who contribute their time and energy in teaching the faith. In addition to our 40-strong Sunday School teaching team, countless others have been engaged in faith formation at St. Paul’s by teaching short- and long-term adult studies, developing educational programs, or serving on the Adult Education Committee. A brief video highlighting the Sunday School program will be shown during worship this morning, June 10, and all teachers will be invited to stand and be recognized for their service by a very grateful congregation. For more information about teaching, or to learn other ways to be involved in Christian education at St. Paul’s, please contact Meg Baker at [email protected] or 301-933-7933, ext. 104.

Prayer Bowl of Well-Wishes – If you would like to offer a personal note, card, or letter wishing Rev. Claire farewell, you may place your well-wishes in the Prayer Bowl found in the Narthex on June 10 and June 17. We will collect the notes and present them to her on her final day at St. Paul’s. All other gifts may be brought to the church office. Please contact Erin Steele at [email protected] with any questions. VBS is Coming Up! – Youth Helper training for VBS will take place in the Chapel on Monday, June 18. Campers age 3 through those entering 5th grade will fill our rooms June 19-22, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. All applications and camper fees were due on May 31. For Camper questions, please contact Robin Mayhew at [email protected]. Youth Helpers should contact Meg Baker ([email protected], 301-933-7933 ext. 104) with any questions. What do Jimmy Carter, Stephen Colbert, Anne Lamott, and John Grisham have in common? – The answer may surprise you: they are all Sunday School teachers! Join their ranks by taking one hour to teach Summer Sunday School this summer. We need at least two adult volunteers to lead classes each week during the 10:30 AM worship hour: one for children ages 2-5, and one for ages 6-10. All materials – curriculum, suggested activities, and snacks – will be provided. Youth helpers are also welcome and encouraged to participate! Dates are available now through Sunday, August 26. Sign-up online at http://stpaulsk.org/community/children or contact Meg Baker ([email protected], 301-933-7933 ext. 104). Thank you to those already signed up to help in this important way! Prayer Lift and Bible Study Schedule – The weekly Tuesday gatherings of the Prayer Lift group and the drop-in Bible Study class will meet as usual on Tuesday, June 12, then will take a break during the summer months before we reconvene in September. June Choir – Have you been thinking about singing in the choir but worried about the rehearsal schedule or commitment? Then welcome to June Choir! Just come to Room 211 (Choir Room) on June 10 or 24 at 9:30 AM. We rehearse together before the 10:30 AM worship service and sing music specifically chosen by Director of Music Tom Pedersen to be meaningful and accessible to this pick-up choir. There will be extra music on Sunday, June 17 so if you are interested in singing that day, make plans to attend a special rehearsal on Saturday, June 16 at 10:00 AM. Questions? Contact Tom at [email protected]. Church Picnic – Mark your calendars now for the annual St. Paul’s Church Picnic. Lunch will be served in Reinhardt Park, directly across the street from St. Paul’s main doors, on Sunday, June 17 following the 10:30 AM worship service. Children will enjoy a moon bounce and face painting, and all will enjoy opportunities for fellowship and a time to bid farewell to Rev. Claire Matheny.

Missing Something? – Over time, we’ve collected a number of dishes, storage containers, baskets, and other items left behind after gatherings and events here at the church. If you might have left an item, please look for it in the Narthex between June 10 and June 17, and take it home with you. All items remaining at the church after that time will be donated to charity. Counters Wanted – We are looking for a few new counters to join our team. Each Sunday after worship small groups of counters take the church offerings, count the contributions, and record the week’s financial numbers. If your skills align with this area, we welcome your help. Please contact Rev. Adam Snell directly to discuss this volunteer opportunity ([email protected], 301-933-7933 ext. 101). Still Wednesday – Feeling called to stillness and community in a world that is all too loud? Still Wednesday is held in either the Sanctuary or Octagon at St. Paul’s each week. Join us 7:00-8:00 PM on Wednesday for an hour of prayer and quiet. Still Wednesday facilitators lead the evening in a variety of formats that could include walking meditation, lectio divina, poetry, journaling, art, or music. Most evenings will include about 20 minutes of silent prayer. Simply come as you’re able. We will meet June 13, 20, and 27, then take a break in July and August. SPY News – The SPY Briefing Newsletter for June-July features a special photo montage with some of our activities from 2017-2018. Even though we take a break from regularly scheduled weekly meetings during the summer, we still have some activities planned. There are still spots available for Senior High (including current 8th graders) for Group Work Camp headed to Virginia Beach to work on house repair projects June 24-30. Both Middle and Senior High youth can participate as Wilderness Trail hikers, taking in the beauty of God’s creation on the Appalachian Trail – spots are still available for July 22-28. Parents! We will be launching exciting new projects in the Fall, so keep an eye on your inboxes for a survey in the coming weeks to help capture your feedback. For other details, please contact Micah at [email protected], go to http://stpaulsk.org/community/youth, or pick up a copy of the SPY Briefing newsletter in the church office. Communion Collect – The next Communion Collect will be July 1, but we welcome donations any time! You can place non-perishable grocery items in the bins in the Narthex, pre-pack full bags using a shopping list provided, or donate Safeway or Giant grocery store gift cards ($10 value each, please). Volunteers will be needed after each worship service to help sort and bag contributions. We also invite volunteers for distribution night on Monday, July 2 starting at about 6:45 PM in Heavener Hall, when we get ready for the families to arrive later that night. We are also in need of drivers! Please contact coordinators Kim Longsworth ([email protected], 301-580-8832) or Jean Langbein ([email protected], 301-622-0737) if you can volunteer as a driver, even occasionally, to help deliver groceries to those who are shut-in, disabled, or otherwise unable to make it to the church.

Liturgists and Communion Stewards – We are looking for Liturgists to read Scripture and Communion Stewards to help serve communion during the first worship service on Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM. Dates are available in July and August. To sign up for one or both roles, simply add your name and email address to the sign-up sheet found at this site: goo.gl/Xz5T79. Cheerful Bakers Needed – Thank you to all the talented bakers who share the gift of baking with the church community! We are blessed with a time of fellowship after worship each week, and to enjoy coffee and baked treats. There are one or two slots available on the following Sundays: July 29; August 5, 12, 19, 26. Bakers are asked to provide about 8 dozen cookies or similar goodies (nut free, please). Sign up on the clipboard found in the Octagon on Sunday mornings or in the Octagon Kitchen during the week. Please contact the church office if you have questions. Great History – If our Heritage Sunday celebration in April sparked your interest, you can find the book The Spirit of Methodism in Kensington on sale in the church office during the week. The St. Paul’s history book is an award-winning trove of information about St. Paul’s and is full of historical photos and interesting stories, recounting everything from musical performances at the White House to cream pies being thrown at a former pastor. The cost is $10. United Methodist Camps – The Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church offers a number of exciting church camps during the summer months. Flyers are available in the church office with dates for activities at Camp Manidokan in the mountains near Harper’s Ferry WV, and West River Center on the banks of the Chesapeake tributary West River. Go to funfriendsfaith.com to learn more about the many camps for all different ages and interests! Concerns about cost shouldn’t keep you from participating, since St. Paul’s offers campership scholarships to help cover part or all of the fees associated with camp opportunities. Contact Micah Smartt ([email protected], 301-933-7933 ext. 111) to discuss camperships. Youth Choir Hiatus – The Youth Choir is currently taking a break and looks to re-launch in the 2018-2019 school year. Thanks to all who shared their gifts of music over the past year! To get involved in future activities, please contact Tom Pedersen at [email protected]. Associate Pastor News – Associate Pastor Rev. Claire Matheny has accepted a new call to serve as Enabling Minister at Kittamaqundi Church in Columbia, MD. Rev. Claire’s last day at St. Paul’s will be Sunday, June 17, 2018. Our next Associate Pastor will be Rev. Kate Mackereth Fulton, currently serving as Chaplain Resident at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. She will begin at St. Paul’s on July 1, 2018. FaithFlix – FaithFlix, our Sunday afternoon series of film viewings and faith-filled discussions, will not meet during the summer months but will resume in September. We hope you will join us then!

Christian Faith 101 – Christian Faith 101, an adult study class, will be offered on Tuesday mornings this fall. The course explores the religious, historical, and political context that shaped major components of Christian faith, doctrine, and practice as it developed over centuries. The course consists of 14 three-hour sessions, held each Tuesday morning beginning September 4, 2018. The class size is limited to 12 participants. The course content is appropriate for all Christian disciplines and does not require extensive previous knowledge of the Bible or Christian doctrine. A flyer with more details about the class is available in the church office. Please contact Brian or Therese Walden for additional information or if you are interested in participating (bewalden@verizon, net, 301-509-8129; [email protected], 301-509-8128). Announcements and Epistle Articles – If you have an upcoming St. Paul’s-related event and want to let church members and friends know about it with an announcement in the Sunday bulletin, please email Erin Steele in the church office at [email protected]. All bulletin announcements must be received by 12:00 noon on Wednesday. The suggested length is 75 words and should include date, time, and contact information. If you have an article to go in the monthly Epistle Newsletter, submit Epistle items to Erin Steele at [email protected] no later than the 15th of the month. Please send Epistle content as a Word doc attachment with “Epistle Item” in the subject line. Epistle articles should be about 250 words or less. Paper submissions may be placed in the yellow “Epistle” folder on the desk in the main office. Please note that Epistle articles are not automatically included in the bulletin announcements, or vice versa, so be sure to submit items separately if you want them to appear in both places. Thanks for staying connected to all that St. Paul’s has to offer!
