It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to

go and bear fruit.— John 15:16

This Thursday, May 10th, we celebrate the memorial of a recently canonized saint whose story has captivated the world’s attention for many years. The future Saint Damien was born to a working class in Belgium. He early on discerned a vocation to the religious life, so as a young man he joined a missionary order, the Congregation of the Sacred Heart. He later volunteered to go to Hawaii where he was ordained a priest in 1864. For 10 years he worked tirelessly on the main island helping to build hospitals, schools and parishes. He learned the Hawaiian language and familiarized himself with the culture. It was while visiting some parishioners who lived on a remote part of the island, that he became acquainted with the devastating illness of leprosy which at that time was epidemic in Hawaii. The government, out of fear, had decided to isolate people diagnosed with leprosy. They forcefully removed them from their homes and families and shipped them off to the island of Moloka’i which in those days was nearly inaccessible. Once the ship reached the rocky coast of the island, the lepers were simply thrown overboard to make it to shore as best they could. Of course, many of them died. Damien, hearing of this tragic situation, got permission from his bishop to go and minister to the people on Moloka’i. When he arrived there, he found conditions of appalling squalor. The shelters and the sanitation were almost non-existent, and as a consequence the poor lepers were reduced to desperation, dying miserably with no one to care for them. Damien set to work at once and despite many obstacles he managed to organize the health care and also the religious life on the island. People who had fallen into despair were given back their human dignity; the younger lepers were taught trades and skills they could use to make a living; music, worship and recreation were organized. An order of Franciscan sisters came to help, and soon the island was a real community. Eventually, word of Father Damien’s work on Moloka’i began to circulate around the world. The famous writer Robert Lewis Stevenson visited from Europe and wrote about what he saw. The Queen of Hawaii also came to see for herself what this foreign priest had done for her people. Damien’s life, like that of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, was one of total and complete dedication to Christ in the guise of these outcast lepers. Eventually, Damien himself became infected with the disease. As he lay dying he said, “I make myself a leper with the lepers, to gain all for Jesus Christ.” Damien of Moloka’i was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1995 and Pope Benedict XVI canonized him in the year 2009. Fr. Ulysses

P. Ulises
