Lean Enterprise and Six Sigma
Lean Enterprise about transforming the old mass production capabilities into new lean capabilities
Extends efficiencies of lean manufacturing to the supply chain, logistics, administration and service operations
Strives for just-in-time operations and continuous flow via…
tight relationships with customers and suppliers
synchronization of distribution and transportation systems
cellular manufacturingStreamlined, information-enabled workflows
Emphasizes integrated, cradle-to-cradle design, incorporating design for manufacturability, reproducibility, product lifecycle, etc.
Six Sigma emphasizes improving existing capabilities
Set of structured methodologies, problem-solving tools and advanced statistical methods for analyzing and improving processes, products and servicesApplies across broad range of metrics, especially cost, quality, time and variability
Moves beyond treating symptoms and short-term problems to the lasting elimination of root causes
Infrastructure required for Lean Enterprise and Six Sigma to be effective
Guiding infrastructure of business strategy, business planning, enterprise leadership, program management, and team management
Supporting infrastructure to enable change management and workforce training and development
2
Motivation
Lean Enterprise and Six Sigma experts are in strong demand in Silicon ValleyAs Silicon Valley’s premier teaching university, San José State University has an important role in…
Providing graduates with the expertise to serve Silicon ValleyOffering a pool of faculty experts with deep subject matter expertiseFacilitating university-to-company and company-to-company interactions
Department of Industrial and Systems EngineeringHas long had a forward-looking curriculum covering much of six sigma, just-in-time manufacturing, supply chain, logistics, value engineering, integrated product life cycle, environmentally conscious manufacturing
College of EngineeringFunded relevant work

Several certification levels
Six Sigma Lean
Master black belt: black belt + overall six sigma orchestration
Gold (master): silver + strategic (flows and infrastructure for
entire organization; e.g., new product development, supply
chain, order-to-delivery, administration)
Black belt: green belt + statistical tools
Silver: bronze + integrative (flows from suppliers through
customers)
Green belt: basic problem-solving methodology and tools
Bronze: tactical (local process)
Yellow belt: broad overview

Should lean six sigma black belt certification be done by professional organization?
YesAdds independent credibility and branding beyond degreeCloser to practice, ensuring curriculum meets needs of industry
NoSJSU brand is strong; no need for external brandNo other universities found that require independent certificationsExtra layer of bureaucracy, delay: students will need to take tests, wait for results, and show certificatesExtra cost for students (~$1500)Lack of academic freedom
Over-emphasis on implicit correctness of methodsOver-crowding courses with material to “teach to the test” rather than develop critical thinking abilities
