You’re probably wondering why OneNote is so wonderful. You’re also
likely questioning the need for another app where you type notes.
Word and Excel could be used however, OneNote can be used in con-
junction with Word, Excel and even Outlook, giving it a ton of flexibility.
We haven’t enough space here to explain all the ways in which this
snazzy program can be used but, we hope to show you enough features
to inspire you to explore its full capabilities.
In its simplest form, OneNote is great for taking meeting notes and
jotting down ideas. And, because it is designed as a notebook, you can
add tabs for different subjects and pages within tabs. The first Feature is
that there’s auto-save built right into the program. There’s actually no
SAVE function because there’s no need for one!
On a Surface Pro or other stylus-equipped tablet you can write or draw
directly on the screen. Feature #2: If you prefer ruled lines to guide your
writing, change the background to look like ruled paper or graph paper!
When you’re done, if your device is touchscreen-capable, (Feature #3
here) OneNote can convert your handwritten notes to text with its Ink
to Text command. What’s more, once you’ve converted handwriting to
text…Feature #4 coming…you can email that page of notes directly from
OneNote because it’s connected to Outlook.
And, speaking of Outlook, when you’ve scheduled a meeting in your
Outlook calendar, have you noticed that OneNote icon in the ribbon
when you open an appointment or meeting? Click on that and Feature
#5 opens OneNote and automatically inserts all the meeting details: its
date, time, and place, the invitation message and attendees. If you’re
responsible for meeting minutes, when you email them directly from
OneNote, the attendees are automatically put in the recipient field of
the email! That’s pretty cool.
Feature #6 does some information organizing for you. There are pre-
designed templates to help you format a big-picture project overview,
meeting minutes (simple to formal), several types of to-do lists or, to
just simply decorate your background.
Go ahead...organize a meeting just to play with all these OneNote
features. We know you want to!
