Examples of ExcellenceExploring Sustainability Through the G.R.E.E.N. – Green Roof Environmental Evaluation Network – program, students have an opportunity to explore green roof technology and influence future environmental trends. Located on the roofs of the Engineering Building and Student Success Center, the green roof installation is part of an effort to evaluate green roof performance including plant growth, roof coverage, and thermal characteristics.Recently, the ABC-TV network show Extreme Makeover Home Edition took an interest in the green roof research happening at SIUE.

Sculptures on Campus Art students have an opportunity to create large scale artwork in a wide variety of mediums. This art is displayed on campus throughout the year and many are then moved to public parks for permanent display.

Discovering Underground HazardsGeography students are involved in a new pilot project launched by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to digitally archive maps of abandoned mines throughout the state.

Hands-on Performance LearningFrom working backstage to stage management, technical experience and performance, music and theater students learn through hands-on experience. Music students perform in concert on campus and go out into the community to play for business and community events.

According to an estimate by the National Science Foundation, the shortage of engineers in the U.S. will reach 70,000 by the year 2010. The SIUE School of Engineering prepares students to meet this demand with a spirit of creativity and innovation. There is more to becoming an engineer than excelling in math and science classes. www.siue.edu/engineeringWhat do engineering students do for fun?Paddle a Concrete Canoe The American Society of Civil Engineers National Concrete Canoe Competition challenges civil engineering students from across the country on their knowledge, creativity and stamina. It’s all in the mix. The concrete canoe team spends months developing a concrete mix light enough to float yet strong enough to hold the weight of several students. The team carefully fabricates a canoe with concrete, carbon fiber and fiber glass mesh. The builders must be as strong as the canoe to compete in the sprint and endurance races.

Build a Steel Bridge Civil Engineering students design and fabricate a 20-foot-long bridge using only steel members and connectors to compete in the American Society of Civil Engineers Steel Bridge Competition.

Rock Crawling and Mud Bogging – Mini BajaMechanical Engineering students compete each year in the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) design and racing competition. The SAE is an organization of automakers dedicated to advancing mobility engineering worldwide. Each team creates a reduced-scale off-road (Mini Baja) vehicle to be tested against schools across the globe.

Race a Formula Car Few things are more exciting than racing a car that you built from the ground up. The SAE hosts an international competition that challenges students to design, fabricate and race a formula car. Vehicles are tested on acceleration, fuel economy, braking and endurance.

School of NursingThe SIUE School of Nursing is an excellent environment to learn and prepare for a career in health care. The School is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), the gold standard for baccalaureate and graduate degree nursing programs. In fact, this year, SIUE was awarded an impressive 10-year accreditation by the CCNE. This means that SIUE nursing students can be assured of receiving the highest quality education. Also, the agencies who hire SIUE graduates can be sure they are getting an excellent nurse.

Human Patient Simulation

Simulated learning is quickly becoming the standard in nursing programs and the SIUE School of Nursing is leading the way. SIUE students have access to one of the most technologically-advanced simulated learning centers in the region. The Nursing Curriculum Includes

Service Commitment Service learning is a priority for SIUE nursing students, in fact, it’s recognized as part of the curriculum. Nursing students spend 15-hours per semester in service activities such as:

• Working with children in the Head Start Program

• Tutoring students at area elementary schools

• Working with patients in hospice or nursing homes

Course Content The learner-centered curriculum model engages students in active learning and focuses on the nurse’s role as part of the health care team.

Portfolio Students write about three critical incidents each semester, reflecting upon a patient care experience that had a significant impact on them as a student.

Faculty Mentors Each nursing student is assigned a faculty mentor who provides support throughout the course of study. Approximately 85 percent of our faculty has the doctoral degree and another 10 percent are enrolled in doctoral programs. Students work alongside faculty with national and international reputations for their scholarship.

Clinical Experience

The SIUE School of Nursing has partnered with more than 800 healthcare agencies in Central and Southern Illinois and the St. Louis region. The clinical experiences, combined with the simulated lab experience, give SIUE students a competitive advantage when it comes time to look for their first nursing job.

The SNAP Program

The Student Nurse Achievement Program (SNAP) is a five-year bachelor of science in nursing program (instead of a traditional four-year program). Students sign contracts agreeing to return to their communities for at least one year after graduation to provide quality, competent nursing services through the region’s health care agencies.

School of PharmacyThe SIUE School of Pharmacy graduated its first class in 2009. Our graduates will benefit from an unprecedented demand for pharmacists in a wide variety of professional settings such as community pharmacies, hospitals, the pharmaceutical industry and academia.

Pharmacy students work alongside other health professionals. This team approach allows health care professionals to optimize drug therapy and offer the highest quality of patient care.

• Pharmacy students enjoy new laboratory and learning facilities. Each incoming student receives a laptop for use during their time at SIUE.

• Students work closely with faculty on research projects that will improve drug design and development, drug delivery, and disease and pain therapy.

Senior AssignmentSlUE is one of only a few universities across the country to offer a capstone undergraduate project that allows students to apply what they have learned prior to graduation. The Senior Assignment (SRA), the hallmark of a baccalaureate education at SIUE, has captured national attention as an innovative learning opportunity. In fact, for the past four years, U.S.News & World Report has ranked SIUE among the best universities in the country for the capstone senior project program.

SIUE Honors Scholars Program Some of the nations best and brightest are Honors Scholars. New freshmen with high academic qualifications are invited to become Honors Scholars. Selection is based on academic history and letters of recommendation. With the help of distinguished faculty mentors, Honors Scholars can design a curriculum to explore their intellectual interests. Classes are small and restricted to Honors Scholars. These students can study one or two academic areas in depth, or a variety of courses outside their major. All Meridian Scholars are automatically admitted into the Honors Scholars Program.

Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities Program Through the SIUE Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities Program (URCA), our students work closely with faculty mentors on research or creative activities typically available only to graduate students. Students have the option to work as either associates or assistants. URCA assistants work on faculty-led projects and gain an introductory experience of research or creative activities in a specific field. URCA associates, working with a faculty mentor, lead their own research project or creative activity and participate in the URCA Symposium.

Private or alternative loans are available through private lenders.Student Employment Each year, more than 1,200 students are employed on campus. Job roles can range from food service to research assistant. Students receive a bi-weekly paycheck to offset living expenses and tuition. Federal Work Study is an option but not a requirement.

Freshman Admission to SIUE

Freshman Admission Requirements Applications will be considered using the following factors

Deadline for Freshman Admission Applicants can apply beginning June 1 prior to their senior year. Admission decisions will be made beginning September 15. Priority consideration for admission will be given to students whose applications and all supporting documents are postmarked by December 1. Applications and supporting documents postmarked after December 1 may be subject to additional review by the Admissions Review Committee. Applications and/or supporting documents postmarked after May 1 may not be considered for admission.

Springboard to Success (Fall Term Entry)Once admitted for fall, it’s mandatory that you attend the Springboard to Success registration program. Springboard invitations will be mailed within a few weeks of being admitted to SIUE. Plan to sign up online for Springboard to Success and pay the registration/enrollment fee by May 1. The nonrefundable fee ensures your spot and confirms your intent to enroll in the fall. Springboard registrations and/or fees received after May 1 will be accepted on a space-available basis.

Getting Started Checklist - Freshmen • Take the ACT or SAT as early as possible and have

scores sent to SlUE (ACT code is 1147; SAT code is 1759).

• Visit the campus for the annual PREVIEW SlUE in October or November or schedule a personal visit and campus tour.

Transfer Admission Requirements Students who transfer with 30 semester hours or more from an accredited institution will be admitted to SlUE with a minimum cumulative 2.0/4.0 (C) grade point average.

Students who transfer with fewer than 30 semester hours must also submit a high school transcript and ACT/SAT test scores. These students must meet freshman admission requirements.

SlUE TRANSFERmation All transfer students should plan to attend TRANSFERmation. This program gives you an opportunity to learn more about what you need to get started at SlUE. Highlights include: Introduction to academic programs and requirements Opportunities to explore campus and meet other

transfer students new to SlUE Information about residence life, commuter

resources, Health Services, Student Affairs, and the Career Development Center

Transfer Credit SlUE general education requirements are considered met if Students have received an A.A., A.S. or A.S.A.

degree from an accredited two-year institution that conforms to the Illinois Community College Board

SIUE does not limit the number of transfer credits from other schools; however, at least 60 semester hours of credit must be earned at a four-year college or university.
