“Seemingly inexhaustible numbers of objects, environments, landscapes, cityscapes, mindscapes, and interventions could be filled under the terms of site-specific and installation, terms that

have an equally complex history.”

“Content could be space, space could be content, as sculpture was extrapoled into and upon its site.”

“During the 1960s, minimal sculpture launched an attack on the prestige of both artist and artwork, granting that prestige

instead to the situated spectator, whose self-conscious perception of the minimal object in relation to the site of its

installation produced the work’s meaning.” Douglas Crimp*

Site-specificity Noções, definições e abordagens ao lugar

“If one accepts the proposition that the meanings of utterances, actions and events are affected by their ‘local position’, by the

situation of which they are a part, then a work of art, too, will be defined in relation to its place and position.”

Site-specificity Noções, definições e abordagens ao lugar

“Since the eighties, ‘site-specific’ also has been applied to exhibitions including a number of artists whose works reference

or are inspired by the site where they are shown. Preferred venues include buildings not associated with art or locations out

of doors. With both individual projects and exhibitions, site-specificity connotes the inseparability of location in relation to

signification.” Reesa Greenberg*

Site-specificity Noções, definições e abordagens ao lugar

1. A necessidade, por parte da vanguarda artística, de ir mais além dos limites impostos pelos meios ditos tradicionais (pintura e escultura), bem como dos locais convencionais de exposição;

2. O desafio em transpor o significado do objeto artístico para o contexto onde ele se insere;

3. A reestruturação do sujeito enquanto ser capaz de uma relação e experiência real e física com a obra de arte no espaço onde ambos se encontram;

“[site-specific] is applied rather indiscriminately to art works, museum exhibitions, public art projects, city arts festivals,

architectural installations; and it is embraced as an automatic signature of “criticality” or “progressivity” by artists, architects,

dealers, curators, critics, arts administrators, and funding organizations .”

“[…] site-specific art initially took the site as an actual location, a tangible reality, its identity composed of a unique combination of physical elements: length, depth, height, texture, and shape

of walls and rooms; scale and proportion of plazas, buildings, or parks; existing conditions of lighting, ventilation, traffic patterns;

distinctive topographical features and so forth.” Miwon Kwon*

“Tilted Arc was conceived from the start as a site-specific sculpture and was not meant to be

‘site-adjusted’ or… ‘relocated’. Site-specific works deal with the environmental

components of given spaces. The scale, size, and location of site-specific works are

determined by the topography of the site, whether it be urban or landscape or

architectural enclosure. The works become part of the site and restructure both conceptually

and perceptually the organization of the site .” Richard Serra*

“The modern gallery/ museum space […] with its stark walls, artificial lighting (no windows), controlled climate, and pristine

architectonics, was perceived not only in terms of basic dimensions and proportion but as an institutional disguise, a

normative exhibition convention serving an ideological function.”

“The ‘work’ no longer seeks to be a noun/ object but a verb/

process, provoking the viewer’s critical (not just physical) acuity regarding the ideological conditions of their viewing.”

discursive entity.” James Meyer*

“[…] the art work’s relationship to the actuality of a location (as site) and the social conditions of the institutional frame (as site) are both subordinated to a discursively determined site that is

delineated as a field of knowledge, intellectual exchange, or cultural debate.” Miwon Kwon1

“[…] Site as unique, demarcated place available to perceptual experience alone – the phenomenological site of Serra or the

critical site of institutional critique – becomes a network of sites referring to an elsewhere.” James Meyer2

3. Abordagem “discursiva” (functional site)

Page 29: Site-Specificity Powerpoint

• compreensão “discursiva” do lugar / functional site

Meyer: 1. Literal site

2. Critical site 3. Functional site

“(…) factories and forests, slaughterhouses and opera houses, churches and psychiatric hospital and private homes, all have recently been opened up as spaces for a new kind of artistic

collaboration or intervention.”1

“The preferred place for exhibitions of contemporary art is no longer the house or apartment turned into a gallery but a former

factory or warehouse.” Reesa Greenberg2

“Alternative spaces were not in the business of selling art and because they did not have permanent collections, they could be

free of the weight of art history. They could also provide a physical alternative to the pristine conditions of a museum or

“The intention was to enable viewers, once having entered the interior of the installation, to find the exterior to be as important

as the interior... I wanted to merge interior and exterior conditions, that is, exterior noise, air, light, and pollutants with

the conditions existing in the interior.” Michael Asher*

“Typically, an artist (no longer a studio-bound object maker, primarily working on call) is invited by an art institution to execute a work specifically configured

for the framework provided by the institution (in some cases the artist may solicit the institution with a proposal). Subsequently, the artist enters into a contractual agreement with the host institution for the commission. There

follow repeated visits to or extended stays at the site; research into the particularities of the institution and/or the city within which it is located (its

history, constituency of the [art] audience, the installation space); consideration of the parameters of the exhibition itself (its thematic structure, social

relevance, other artists in the show); and many meetings with curators, educators, and administrative support staff, who may all end up “collaborating” with the artist to produce the work. The project will likely be time-consuming and in the end will have engaged the “site” in a multitude of ways, and the documentation of the project will take on another life within the art world’s

publicity circuit, which will in turn alert another institution for another commission.”
