Introduction

This report is to illustrate about the construction site and tell what we have learnt and seen from the construction site, The Andes. The site visit is held on Friday, 26th June, 2015. It was organized by Sr. Ang Fuey Lin. We were separated by 2 buses to the site and RM15 per person is for the bus fees.

The site is located at Bukit Kinrara 1, Puchong. The Andes is strategically located between the borderline of Puchong and Bukit Jalil, The Andes can be easily accessible via a wide network of major expressways.

Before going to the site, every one of us need to buy a safety helmet. We also need to give our name as per IC, student ID and IC number to the lecturer, Ms Ang. An idenmity form is necessary before going to the construction site as well.

Objectives

To become a professional quantity surveyor, there are a lot of things need to be learnt. The most important point is to understand the basics of the construction process. Visiting the construction site can make us understand the practical aspect of construction techniques in comparison to the theory aspect in books and its application on site.

Other than that, visiting a construction site can let us know the exposure to actual working environment on site including uncertainty circumstances, like weather.

Besides that, this report also improves our ability to communicate with the construction team members on site and to see the importance of teamwork in the building team. Witness the usage of construction equipment on site including mechanical plants also one of the steps of becoming a professional quantity surveyor.

One of the important objectives of visiting construction site is to explore and identify various types of building materials and technology on site. The importance of safety on site and understanding of safety problems and site conditions have to aware. We are able to recognize the items measurable for sub-structure and reinforced concrete frame works.

Technical Observation

Before going to the site, we have prepared the safety helmet for visiting the construction site. Wearing a safety helmet is to protect our safety. On the day of the site visiting, we gathered in front of 7-eleven located in Taylor’s University at 930am. We took about 15 minutes to reach the destination.

Once we reached the construction site, the first thing I saw is the information board of the construction. Then, we were asked to gather under a tent. James Siow who is the project manager gave us a brief what they have finished and what they are still doing. Then, we were separated by 3 groups and there’s a leader for each group.

Firstly, we followed our leader to the basement floor level. We saw columns, slab, wall, a lot of steel bars, links, pile caps, concrete cover, etc. We were told that the types of foundation of this construction is bored piled foundation.

The concrete grade of column is Grade 40 while the concrete grade of beam, slab and pile cap are Grade 35. Grade 35 reinforced concrete is cheaper than Grade 40, which is why it is widely used in the construction. Grade 35 reinforced concrete has better resistance to fire and low maintenance cost. However, Grade 35 reinforced concrete has lower strength, it can get cracked easily.

On the other hand, Grade 40 is expensive but it is highly compressive strength, it can extend its life cycles. When you use Grade 40 reinforced concrete, the size of the structure may be reduced, so that you can save the costs.

Types of foundation

PILED FOUNDATION

It’s a group of piles that supports a superstructure. It can be used with multi storey buildings. One of the function of piled foundation is too transmit load through weak and unstable soil conditions. Pile cap will connect the piles together and distributes the superstructure loads the layer beneath.

In this construction, they used concrete bored piling. The concrete grade of pile cap is Grade 35.

Piled foundation inadequate bearing capacity of shallow foundations. This type of foundation prevent uplift force and reduce excessive settlement.

Advantages:

1. Piles of any size and length may be constructed at the site.2. Damage due to driving and handling that is common in precast piles is eliminated in

this case.3. These piles are ideally suited in places where vibrations of any type are required to

be avoided to preserve the safety of the adjoining structure.4. Suitable in soils of poor drainage qualities since cast-in-situ piles do not significantly

disturb the surrounding soil.

Disadvantages:

1. Installation of cast-in-situ piles requires careful supervision and quality control of all the materials used in the construction.

2. The method is quite cumbersome. It needs sufficient storage space for all the materials used in the construction.

3. The advantage of increased bearing capacity due to compaction in granular soil that could be obtained by a driven pile is not produced by a cast-in-situ pile.

4. Construction of piles in holes where there is heavy current of ground water flow or artesian pressure is very difficult.

Conclusion

Site visiting was not as tough as I thought. The half of the reason is the weather that day is not too hot. It was fun about looking at those building elements which we have learnt in the class. Basically, after visiting the construction, I understand the construction process, like how did they start and construct everything step by step.

Site visiting also improves my communication ability with the team and understand that teamwork is important in site visiting. It improves my understanding of theories of building structure can able to apply in practical tasks. My eyes were widely open after I had seen various types of construction equipment and its application on site. I found that the awareness of safety on site is very important which you have to be clear with it before going to site.

Besides that, I believed that writing the site report shows that our understanding level of everything that we have learnt before. From recognize the items measurable for sub-structure and reinforced concrete frame works, I am able to do better in every practical tasks.

The most important thing that I have learnt about is I think in a construction, every roles are important. No matter small until workers of carrying heavy materials or big until a project manager. They are all very important, not even one can be lost. It is because every finished buildings are done with teamwork and cooperation.

In the conclusion, I have gained a lot of knowledge in this construction site visit. I am glad that I have this chance to visit a construction site before I go to work. I wish there is another chance to visit another construction site.
