SWOT ANALYSIS

STRENGTH

UNDULATING SITE CONTOUR The gentle slopes are rather easy to

incorporate into a design compared to steep slopes

less prone to landslides provides different views at different levels

while progressing through site

VIEWS Site is placed strategically with many

beautiful panoramic viewpoints View of Gunung Jerai Surrounded by natural environment

SOUNDS Echoing of the stream Call of the birds Rustling of leaves Howling of the wind

WEAKNESS

LACK OF SIGNAGE Visitors usually miss the candis when

visiting the existing museum Prone to getting lost and not knowing

where to go without a guide

LACK OF DRAMATIC ELEMENT OF PATH LEADING TO CANDI Unwelcoming and causes uncertainty in

visitors, whether they are in fact allowed to proceed beyond the staircase

Fails to create a feeling of anticipation

INEFFECTIVE LAYOUT Without a guide, visitors would not know

which way to proceed and are at risk of missing certain exhibits because they are not indicated in any way

The exhibits are too far apart and there is nothing between them to engage the user’s interest

TREATMENT PLANT Unsightly Smelly Disrupts the experience

OPPORTUNITIES

WK - LACK OF SIGNAGE Through planning a circulation that clearly

indicates the direction in which the visitor should take, or certain structures that mark where exhibits are depending on the concept and design

WK - LACK OF DRAMATIC ELEMENT OF PATH LEADING TO CANDI Addition of structure, or manipulation of

the contour to create a dramatic element to incite a variety of feelings suiting to one’s design or concept

WK - INEFFECTIVE LAYOUT The fact that exhibits being too far apart can be

used to an advantage by adding items along the way to retain the user’s interest, for example, minor exhibits placed on pathways leading to major exhibits which also serves to guide them in the right direction while they are exploring

Or perhaps at the very least, some interesting landscaping or shading devices could be provided for pathways between major exhibits to retain visitor interest

STR - UNDULATING SITE CONTOUR and VIEWS Manipulation of the site contour and its

already present views, one may create a different experience and view while the user to progresses throughout the site due to the gradual elevation of the contour. The panoramic views are also a strong plus point to be exploited

STR – SOUNDS The all natural setting provides calming

and natural sounds which creates a tranquil atmosphere by default that can be implemented into one’s design

THREATS

PRESENCE OF VERMIN Through observation, there was no anti

vermin net observed which may result in animals entering the site or VIC

LANDSLIDE Though the risk of a landslide is minimal,

due to the low gradient of the slope of the undulating site, it is still there and is possible due to soil erosion witnessed on site

SECURITY ISSUES When on site, only one guardhouse was

detected, at the front gate, and there seemed to be no guard inside. The area near the candis were not guarded at all, and there was no fence protecting the area from any intruders, which may be a potential threat
