    Preliminary treatment

Screening coarse solids which mayclog the mechanical equipments andpipes

Communition grinding of coarsesolid into smaller and more uniformparticles

Flotation separation of suspendedand floatable solids particles fromwastewater. By air bubbles

    Grit removal

    Primary treatment

Removal of settle able organic solidsby sedimentation and the removal ofmaterials that float (scum) by

    skimming

    Secondary treatment

Dissolved and non-settling organicsolid from the primary effluent areremoved. Aerobic Anaerobic Facultative

Stabilitation of organic matter : Respiration Synthesis

    aerobic microbiological process (sludge)organic matter + O2 CO2 + NH3

    + H2O

    NH3 NO3-

    - lowers suspended solids content (intosludge)

    Tertiary treatment

If disinfection is practiced, it isalways the final process. It is alsocalled effluent polishing

    Filtration :

    Activad carbon removes residual toxins

    Lagooning :

Settlement and further biologicalimprovement in man made ponds.

    Highly aerobic and colonization by

    native macrophytes.

    Levels of Treatment continued

Tertiary (advanced) anaerobic microbiological process with a

different microbe where O2 is toxic (moresludge)

    NO3- N2 (escapes to atmosphere)

PO4-3 if not removed in sludge in secondaryprocess

    PO4-3 + Al+3 AlPO4 (s) (intosludge)

    - aeration to strip N2 and re-oxygenate (add DO)

    Why treat wastewater?

Causes a demand for dissolvedoxygen (lower DO levels of streams)

Adds nutrients (nitrate andphosphate) to cause excessive growth

Increases suspended solids orsediments in streams (turbidityincrease)

    When the treatment isdone

Effluent back to stream after a final carbon filtration and chlorination/dechlorination

Sludge very nutrient rich applied directly to land as fertilizer

incinerated (good fuel after drying) composted (Compro from WSSC)
