Your chairman of today

• Full Professor, K.U.Leuven• Research & Education in

Manufacturing Processes and (CAD)/CAM• Research in Advanced Manufacturing

Processes• Multi-axis Machining, EDM, Hybrid Processes,

…• Machining of advanced materials (ceramics,..)• Advanced tool path planning and generation

(CAD/CAM, CAPP) – digital factory

• Inspirer of importance of the “Manufacturing Industry” in our regions (via KVIV,..)

The manufacturing industry...

• Manufacturing industry essential for welfare and prosperity• 20…25% of our jobs• Stimulates R&D and need for services• Without manufacturing no need for services, logistics, ... • Driving force for indirect job creation• Manufacturing (“maakindustrie”): the engine of welfare

• Manufacturing sector in Belgium (Wetern Europe) under pressure• Re-location and utsourcing• High costs• Mass customisation• ...

3

Do we need to transform ?

Page 4: Sirris manufacturingday2011 introduction_bert-lauwers

EFFRA Reserach Priorities

• (1) Sustainable Manufacturing• People-friendly Factories• Eco-friendly

• (2) ICT-enables intelligent Manufacturing• Smart Factories• Digital Factories• Virtual Factories

• (3) High-productivity Manufacturing• Adpative production equipment• High-precision manufacturing• Zero-defect manufacturing

• (4) Materials in Manufacturing• Materials efficiency• Manufacturing processes for new high-performing materials

Transformations have also been defined for Belgium

Page 5: Sirris manufacturingday2011 introduction_bert-lauwers

Digital & Smart factories...some definitions

• Digital Factories• General digital support of all the activities within the process

chain from development over process and product planning to production by using virtual working techniques

• Information flow within companies• Digital models (product, processes, business,..)• ..

• Smart Factories• The Smart Factory represents a context-sensitive

manufacturing environment that can handle turbulences in real-time production using decentralized information and communication structures for an optimum management of production processes

• Cost efficient, flexible, Mass customisation• ...

• In addition: Virtual factories, Networked factories,..• Large need for computer support !!! (PLM, PDM,...)

Page 6: Sirris manufacturingday2011 introduction_bert-lauwers

Example: The EuroShoe Project

• The whole digital chain (from client to final product) • Design and develop together (different actors)

10/05/2011© sirris 2011 | www.sirris.be | [email protected] | 6

The challenge of EUROShoE Project is the design and manufacturing of customized shoes at a reasonable price for consumers at a much higher level of individual satisfaction

Our kids have interest…

• The way they use computers• Functional features & full simulation !• We can learn from these games !• Projects in that topic are being formulated !• Digital models should include as much as possible information

we need within further steps of the product life cycle• Manufacturing, use phase,… (fully paperless )

Digital and smart models of everything...

• Digital and smart models not only for products, but also for production systems and business processes

• Machine tools / production systems are intelligent, stand-alone and act like “printers”• The network of machine tools and systems ! • Machine tool behaviour is known to the system

(even outside the company) after plug-in • “Add Machine Tool”• Tool path planning• Manufacturing simulation• …..

Page 9: Sirris manufacturingday2011 introduction_bert-lauwers

How to get our kids interested...

• New ways of education• Example: FabLab Leuven (FabLab = Fabrication

Laboratory) !• Everyone can model and make

• Students (bachelor), secondary school, public

• Concept of digital modeling & manufacturing• Software tools should be easy to use !• Tendency towards Fab@home !

Have a nice day

Page 12: Sirris manufacturingday2011 introduction_bert-lauwers

Lunch break at discussion tables

• (1) How to increase the efficiency of operators before switching towards automation?

• (2) How can you combine extreme cost reduction with an excellent perceived customer value?

• (3) How to decrease time between a pilot production system and a flexible mass production system?

• (4) How to overcome the lack of technologically skilled workforce in a production environment?

• (5) How can we master a cost estimation in a early development stage?

• (6) s there a need for software for production scheduling & execution, or can a self organizing system suffice?
