Siren’s SongThe Baron of Illiton

March 2014

The Barony of Illiton is looking toward a big year.

This will be the second year in a row that we have

hosted royalty at Rites of Spring. This is most

definitely a good thing, especially when you

consider that there is a short list of events sharing

that rarified perennial distinction. The goodwill of

the Tanists engenders and grows into the fond

regard of an incoming Crown, a goodwill that

enriches the entire Midlands region.

So let us discuss the things that make two years

running into an ongoing tradition, the same sort of

tradition that all-but-guarantees the presence of the

Crown at events like the Festival of Maidens,

Simple Day, and Candlemas. Treat Rites of Spring

as if it were a wedding day, so that we can celebrate

a long series of anniversaries.

Let’s make the event an easy and pleasant day for

Her Highness. Let’s ensure that She has people to

unload Her vehicle, to set up Her Throne, to serve

as retainers and guards throughout the day, and to

repack Her vehicle at the end of the day. As much

as the presence of royalty makes our event special,

we need to make our event special for the royalty,

because the two are inextricably linked.

Siren’s song Page 1 March 2014

As with every event at which royalty is present, Rites

of Spring must transform into royalty’s show.

Perhaps there will be a Regency Court – perhaps not.

Regardless, let’s ensure that Her Highness’ day is

something she can’t stop talking about. That part of

this equation is easy – have fun, and welcome Her

Highness in to share in that fun. Be the people I

already know we are, and Her Highness cannot help

but want to join in.

Her Excellency and I will do our part. Rites will be

part of the lead-in for this year’s installment of

Baroness Wars, and we all remember how much fun

that became. So we’ll play our roles in the escalating

farce which will result in Baroness Wars II, and we’ll

invite Her Highness to become a part of that game as

well.

The Barony of Illiton can make Rites of Spring a

destination event for the Tanists of the Middle

Kingdom. All we need do is show Her Highness the

sort of people we are, the people I’ve been proud to

serve.

Yours In Service,

Baron Wilhelm

ODYSSEY ABRIDGED

Music and Lyrics by John InchinghamCopyright © 2013 Steve Katlack

CHORUS:He put the odd in Odyssey. His wooden horse made history. No hero of antiquity faced more catastrophes. When monsters and myths met aSailing trip from Troy to Ithaca,Ten years he wandered lost across the sea.

VERSE ONE:Now, according to old Homer, Trojans fought those sneaky Greeks.Over Helen they did battle with great ferocity. But valor was defeated by a gift of trickeryAnd clever King Odysseus won a dreadful destiny.

VERSE TWO:Sly Odysseus yearned to his queen return but the Fates were really mean.He encountered stern Ciconians and Lotus-Eater dreams,And giant Polyphemus, Posidon’s cyclops progeny. He braved the winds and cannibals and sorcerous Circe.

VERSE THREE:Bold Odysseus spoke to spooky ghosts in shady gray Hades,Dodged deadly roving rocks and sinister Siren melodies. He slipped past gruesome Scylla and Charybdis the Slurpy,But the cattle of Hyperion brought him udder misery.

VERSE FOUR:Poor Odysseus floated all alone on a raft of ship debris,After Zeus on Mount Olympus thunder-bolted his galley. He was rescued by Calypso—they fooled around—finally heHome to Greece high-tailed, wrapped in Ino’s veil, swimming like an anchovy.

VERSE FIVE:Damp Odysseus woke up on the shore where Nausicaa washed laundry. She sang. He cried. He bummed a ride back to Queen Penelope. Then, with son Telymachus, a hundred suitors he sushi-ed.And we’ll just pretend that’s a happy end ‘cause it’s epic poetry.

POSTSCRIPT (after final chorus):That’s a brief synopsis of the Odyssey.Muse well upon this tale of calamity.Bad luck may suck but it makes . . . a great story.

I here swear fealty and do homageTo the Crown of the Middle Kingdom

To serve the Crown in all thingsTo remember courtesy and kindnessTo prize justice above personal gain

To labor for the common goodTo enrich the Kingdom and the Society

So they may flourish and growAnd to be worthy of the title of Pelican.

Here by my honor, my handand my heart swear.

Order of the Pelican

Baroness Alzbeta Michalik being elevated to Pelica at Feast of St. Ethyl, Baroness

Wars I.

August 23, 2013

In the Shire of Swordcliff

The Pelican Peer: (http://middlewiki.midrealm.org/index.php/Pelican)

A Society wide order that carries a Patent of Arms. This is the highest recognition one can receive for service to the Society. The badge for this order is, a pelican in its piety. Companions of this order are titled "Master" or "Mistress" of the Pelican and may use the abbreviation OP behind their name.Masters and Mistresses of the Pelican may wear a cap of maintenance as a symbol of their station. The cap of maintenance is a red hat with a turned up brim of ermine similiar to those worn in the late 15th and into the 16th centuries. However, few Pelicans in the Middle Kingdom wear one, preferring to indicate rank with a medalion of the badge of the order. The cap of maintenance is most often seen being worn in court.

The dependant of a Pelican is a protege or associate whom they give guidance and instruction in service to the Society.

It is equal in rank to the Chivalry (containing the Master at Arms and Knight) and Laurel. The Order of the Pelican is a polling order; members meet regularly in person (and electronically) to discuss potential new inductees and give their advice to the Crown. It is a frequent misconception that the Pelicans elect new members, they merely advise the King and Queen of whom they feel is ready to join the Order, it is the Crown that chooses who to induct and elevates them.

A conversation with her Excellency Alzbeta Michalik on her elevation to Pelican.By: Lady Eva Wurster

How long have you been with the SCA and Illiton? Alzbeta: always, with Illiton and since Jubilee Olde English Festival of 2005.

How does becoming a Pelican change your perspective as an SCA member? Alzbeta: I feel it is a role similar to Baroness on a broader scale.

Why would you take on the responsibility of a peer? Alzbeta: For the honor of serving as a Pelican after my role as Baroness has come to completion and for the opportunity to grow and develop in the Society as a whole.

Tell me something I should know about Pelicans? Alzbeta: Pelicans are dedicated. A Pelican helps everyone develop themselves and their role in the Society, Pelicans are self-serving for the betterment of others, they are also there to be sure everyone is enjoying themselves.

"Pelican's make things happen." How does that statement fit your view of a Pelican? Alzbeta: A Pelican is one step in making things happen. It's also important for a Pelican to give an opportunity for others to do and to learn.

During your vigil, is there one word of wisdom or piece of advice that you received that stands out? Why? Alzbeta: Yes, one peer told me that "if the SCA is a party the peers are the host" This statement is a reminder our first goal is to be sure everyone else is having fun.

I've read a statement from a blog, where a Pelican stated "we are the protectors of tradition" Is this you? Alzbeta:I disagree, while tradition is important and I appreciate tradition this is not my entire roll. I believe you have to be open to improvement and new ideas so you don't go stagnant.

I then asked about a Pelican's Protégé. For those who may not be familiar a Protégé is a student of a Pelican. Protégé is a role, not a rank.

Where you a Protégé of a peer? Alzbeta: No

Do you have a Protégé? Alzbeta: No, not at this time. Possibly, after my role as Baroness has come to an end.

What will you look for in a Protégé? Alzbeta: We have to be compatible; the relationship will be similar to a marriage. It's important for everyone that it is a good match.

Baklava Recipe

Ingredients: Yields 25 servings

Filling-1 (5 inch piece) Cinnamon Stick,

broken into 2 to 3 pieces or 2 teaspoons ground

15 to 20 whole allspice berries6 ounces Blanched Almonds 6 ounces Raw or Roasted Walnuts 6 ounces Raw or Roasted Pistachios 1 cup Bread Crumbs2/3 cup Sugar 1/4 cup Water1 teaspoon Rose Water1 pound Phyllo Dough 8 ounces of butter regular or clarified

Syrup-1 ¼ cups Honey 1 ¼ cups Water1 ¼ cups Sugar1 Cinnamon Stick1 (2-inch) piece of fresh Orange Peel

Equipment-Small spray bottle 4-quart Sauce Pan13x9x2 Metal Pan (Glass Can be used also)Spice Grinder and or Food Processor..Method:• Heat the oven to 350 degrees F.• Place the Cinnamon Stick and Allspice

into a spice grinder and grind.• Place the Almonds, Walnuts, Pistachios,

Sugar and freshly ground spices into the bowl of a food processor and pulse until finely chopped but not powdery (approx. 15 pulses). Stir in Bread Crumbs Set aside.

Combine Water and Rose Water in a small spray bottle and set aside.

Trim the sheets of Phyllo dough to fit the bottom of a 13x9x2 inch metal pan, reserve trimmings. Brush the bottom and side of the pan with butter. Lay down 2 sheets of Pyllo Dough, using a pastry brush, butter the 2nd sheet lightly. Repeat this 6 more times brushing butter on the 2nd sheet each time

Top with 1/3 of the filling mixture and spread evenly and thinly. Spritz thoroughly with the rose water. Layer 6 more sheets of Phyllo buttering the 2nd sheet each time. Place another 1/3 of the filling and spritz with rose water.

Repeat with another 6 sheets of Phyllo, buttering every other sheet. Place the last 1/3 of the filling mixture. Spritz for a final time and layer the remaining Phyllo on top, still brushing every other sheet with butter. Work the reserved trimmings into this last layering. Brush the top layer generously with butter

With a sharp knife cut the baklava into pieces. Dipping the knife into warm water between each cut makes it easier. Place in 350 degree oven for 50 to 60 min. until golden brown

During the last 15 min of cooking combine the syrup ingredients in a 4-quart sauce pan. Place over high heat. Stir occasionally until the sugar dissolves. Once boiling, boil for 10 min. After 10 min remove from heat and discard the orange peel and cinnamon stick. Retrace cut lines with knife and pour syrup over baklava.

Let sit uncovered for at least 8 hours or overnight for all syrup to be absorbed. Store covered at room temperature for up to 5 days.

Scribal Newsletter by Lady Eva Wurster

Happy 2014, I hope everyone is faring well. Please take a moment to think about what scribal/illumination accomplishments you wish to complete for this year. I will not be collecting your goals in writing as I had in 2013; however I challenge each of you to push yourself to set a goal for yourself and see it through.

We have inspiration… A collection of reference books have graciously been donated over the last year and are available to borrow. Please contact me if you would like to “check out” any of the following from the Illiton Scribal Library.
