BOARD MEMBERSAt 30 June 2016

In accordance with good Governance Principles, the Montefiore Home seeks to maintain a Board composed of members whom, collectively, provide a broad range of skills and expertise that will support strong corporate governance and strategic planning.

The current Board consists of well-respected individuals that have a history of involvement with the Home and who possess a range of skills and expertise that includes, but is not limited to; finance, law, property, medical & clinical, aged services, food & beverage, education, IT and all round business acumen.

Consistent with the organisation’s Philosophy of Living, Board

members have a passion for supporting a high standard of care which optimises the older person’s quality of life, delivered within a sustainable financial model.

MONTEFIORE BOARD OF MANAGEMENT AND EXECUTIVE

YOUR BOARD

The Home is managed and administered by an elected Board of Management. All Board members act in a voluntary capacity and oversee all facets of the Home’s administration, with the support of a number of different committees. The Board is responsible for the continuing financial viability of the Home.

Today, the Board faces the challenge of the demanding economic environment, a growth in the number of elderly people in our community, and the need to provide appropriate care for the ever-increasing number of people with dementia.

This climate has strengthened the Board’s resolve to continue developing and promoting best practice in all aspects of aged care, constantly reviewing and improving the services we provide to ensure that the elderly in our community receive the care and quality of life they deserve.

BOARD MEMBERS CONTINUED.

Jeremy Waine is an investment banking and financial services professional with more than 18 years’

experience with leading Australian and international companies. He began his career as a corporate

lawyer at Mallesons and then moved into investment banking, principal acquisitions and funds management with UBS Investment Bank, CBA, Westpac and GE Capital. Jeremy is a Director of the Children’s Medical Research Institute and serves as its Treasurer as well as Chair of the Finance and Investment Committee.

I look forward to this time of the year as it gives me the opportunity to reflect on the activities of the past year and to highlight those that truly epitomise what we stand for as an organisation.

There are many achievements and milestones on which I could comment, such as the receipt of an unprecedented 9th Better Practice Award for excellence from the

Commonwealth Government, the appointment of our CEO, Robert Orie, to the position of Deputy Chair of the aged care industry’s national peak body, Leading Age Services Australia, and the overwhelming demand for our residential and homecare services, to name a few.

These are all achievements of which we are justifiably proud and which you can read about in greater detail

throughout the pages of this year’s Annual Report, along with other notable highlights.

In addition to showcasing significant achievements and milestones, this year’s Annual Report also seeks to highlight some of our key challenges.

Within the CEO’s report, for example, you can read about the opportunities and challenges faced

Renée is a Clinical Psychologist and holds a degree in Education. Renée was elected to the Board in 2001, having already been an active member of the Operations Committee.

In her years as a Board member she has written papers, presented at conferences on aspects of ageing, dementia, placing one’s relative in the Home and life within the Home.

Renée is passionate about contributing to the education of staff. She authored and was instrumental in setting up the Montefiore Staff Holocaust Awareness program which is conducted monthly at the Sydney Jewish Museum. This program which trains Montefiore staff to deal with the special requirements of our survivors, has, to date, won 2 prestigious awards for Montefiore. As a child of Holocaust survivors, this is very close to her heart.

PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT CONTINUED.

by our HomeCare service as we prepare for significant changes driven by the Government’s reform agenda and which come into effect in February 2017.

In the Treasurer’s report you will gain a greater understanding about tightening Government fiscal policy and the impact this has on our aged care funding and how this makes delivering complex health care to many of our residents even more challenging. Specifically, the Government has reduced care funding applicable to those requiring a high level of care and which represents a large proportion of our current residents.

Whilst we all appreciate the Government’s budgetary constraints, in addition to reducing care funding, the current legislative framework has the perverse effect of also limiting our ability to increase fees and charges to our residents to compensate for the loss of Government funding. This restriction applies to all residents regardless of their capacity to afford any such increase in fees and charges.

We understand the limitations on Government funding but the current limitations imposed by the legislative framework is unsustainable and a matter that the Government needs to urgently address.

EXPANDING THE RANDWICK CAMPUSIn my report I wish to firstly focus on the significant milestone of securing approval from the NSW Department of Planning to construct 3 new buildings on the Randwick Campus.

Readers of Montefiore LIFE and last year’s Annual Report would be aware that the buildings envisaged for the site include a dementia specific vertical village located on the corner of King and Dangar Streets, and 2

Seniors’ Living Apartment buildings located along King Street.

Whilst we had achieved a master-plan approval for the site in 2011, a change of the mix between the 2 styles of accommodation was significant enough for us to require an amendment to the approved plans.

Over the past year we have been working diligently with the architects, consultants and various regulatory bodies in order to achieve the relevant amendments to the approved plans. As mentioned earlier, I am delighted to advise that, in August this year, we received the approval we sought.

As the largest charitable organisation within the Jewish community our primary purpose is to provide aged care services that meet the needs of the community and to deliver those services to everyone who requires support and care, regardless of their individual financial means.

Over the past few years we have experienced increasing demand and ever lengthening wait-lists for residential care, particularly in our high-care and dementia specific areas. More recently, there has been increasing interest expressed by members of the community for Seniors’ Living Apartments for those that do not require the higher levels of support offered by residential aged care but who would still benefit from access to some support services offered by campus living.

The Board of Management understands the importance of planning to meet the future needs of the community and had the foresight to embark on a complex master-planning process for the Randwick Campus so it could be in a position to expand services when necessary. That time has arrived and, with the support of the community, we are hoping to commence construction in early 2017. It is likely

we will commence with the new residential care building followed closely by the first of the Seniors’ Living Apartment buildings.

RANDWICK CELEBRATES 10 YEARSIt seems somewhat appropriate that securing approval from the NSW Department of Planning in relation to the next stage of development of the Randwick Campus should coincide with the facility’s 10th anniversary.

After 10 years of operating it is remarkable that the facility is still regarded as one of the finest in Australia. Having received a number of awards for excellence and innovation in design, including a prestigious award from the Property Council of Australia, it continues to be regularly visited by various Australian and International aged care providers seeking insight into our design philosophy as well as the care and services we provide.

By the time you read this, our Randwick 10th anniversary celebrations will be over. Thanks to those who attended this significant milestone for the Home. I still remember admitting our first residents on 8 November 2006, 5 to be precise, and the realisation that we had a long way to go before we were at full capacity of 276 residents. My trepidation at the time was clearly unfounded as we work towards delivering more accommodation in the face of ever growing demand.

DEMAND ACROSS ALL CAMPUSES AND SERVICESDemand for accommodation is not limited to our Randwick Campus with our Hunters Hill Campus also experiencing a wait-list, particularly in the high-care nursing areas. Our Woollahra Manor Home remains well sought after as is our Maroubra

facility, which services the needs of the wider community and which has recently benefited from some planned upgrading work.

Whilst residential aged care remains our core business, there is no doubt that growing demand for our homecare services will see this division gain greater prominence in the years ahead. We are extremely proud about the manner in which our HomeCare service has grown since being established in 2009 and the broad range of services it provides to support those still living in their own home. As mentioned, in the CEO’s report you can read about our HomeCare service in greater detail, including the potential impact of Government initiated changes to come into effect in February 2017.

PROFESSOR HENRY BRODATY HONOUREDCongratulations to Montefiore Chair for Healthy Brain Ageing and one of our esteemed Ambassadors, Scientia Professor Henry Brodaty AO, who was awarded The Ryman Prize, an international prize that rewards the best work in the world that has enhanced quality of life for older people and which is widely considered to be the ‘Nobel Prize’ for ageing.

Professor Brodaty has had a stellar career working tirelessly over 30 years to combat dementia. We are truly fortunate to have Professor Brodaty as our research Chair with the purpose of identifying better practice in terms of dementia care and to enable this research to be transferred, in a practical sense, to the delivery of care services at our various campuses.

Meanwhile, in collaboration with the NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation, I am also pleased to advise that Montefiore was recognised for its important role in the development of a NSW Blueprint for Palliative Care.

WITH THANKSAs always, it isn’t possible to thank everyone within the confines of this report but I would like to single out a few individuals and groups for special mention.

Firstly, I’d like to thank our volunteers who contribute so much to the wellbeing of our residents and clients as well as the members of the Ladies’ Committee, ably lead by Co-Presidents, Annette Joseph and Wendy Engelander, for their efforts in raising much needed funds for the Home.

The Home benefits from a richness of Jewish culture and tradition and this is in no small way due to the efforts of our wonderful Rabbi and Rebbetzin David and Vicky Rogut.

My sincere appreciation goes to our CEO, Robert Orie, the management team and all the staff who, on a daily basis, care for our residents and homecare clients.

The Home operates with a dedicated and cohesive Board of Management and I would like to take the opportunity to thank my Executive; Gary Inberg, Tom Mautner and Associate Professor Peter Gonski, along with our fellow Board members for their professionalism and guidance.

Finally thanks to the community – our Members, benefactors, bequestors, Life Governors and supporters who enable us to continue to provide world-class accommodation and care for the elderly in our community.

CEO’S ANNUAL REPORT FY2015-16

‘WHILST ANY MAJOR CHANGE TO GOVERNMENT REGULATION,

SUCH AS THE UPCOMING CHANGES TO HOMECARE, IS NOT WITHOUT RISK, WE ARE

CONFIDENT THAT WE ARE WELL PREPARED FOR THE CHALLENGE.’

As I prepared to write my Annual Report this year I found myself looking back to the first time I reported to members and supporters about the operations of the Home. That was in 2002 and in my report at the time I shared why I decided to join Montefiore.

The reason, as I explained, was because in your career you are often given only one opportunity to do something truly special, to be involved with an organisation that has the commitment to leave an indelible mark in the area of aged care and Montefiore provides me with this opportunity.

Now, 14 years later, I realise that this hasn’t changed. The organisation may have changed, in that it has grown substantially since when I began, but the passion and commitment to continuously raise the bar and make a meaningful difference to the lives of those it cares for has certainly not changed.

I put this down to the fact that the Home operates with a simple set of strategic goals. These include the desire to provide services that meet the needs of the community and, in so doing, providing the highest standard of service that it can reasonably afford.

Over the years this has led the organisation to adopt a vision that sees the Home as the pre-eminent provider of aged care services, effectively delivering a full suite of services and accommodation options in order to support the delivery of a continuum of care to the elderly of the community.

As noted in the President’s report, we took a significant step towards achieving our vision when we successfully entered the homecare market in 2009 and as we embark on the next stage of development of the Randwick Campus the inclusion of Seniors’ Living Apartments will complete the full suite of services and accommodation options and realise the vision of being able to provide a continuum of care to those requiring care and support.

STRATEGIC PRIORITIESIn late 2013 we published our strategic plan which included a number of key areas we wished to focus on over the short to medium term. Since then we have provided regular updates of our progress and I am pleased to advise that all have progressed and will continue to evolve based on feedback, industry reform, and the needs of the business moving forward. Here is a brief update regarding these planning priorities;

u PHILOSOPHY OF LIVING (POL)It is now almost 2 years since we formally launched our POL strategy which took Person Centred Care (PCC) to the next level. It continues to gain interest from our peers in the industry as a representative model of PCC within residential aged care. You can read elsewhere in this Annual Report regarding the launch of our POL Unit Certification Program to monitor the delivery of care and services in accordance with our POL and which we look forward to reporting further on in the year ahead.

u WORKFORCESupporting POL is our workforce strategy where we have focused on upskilling staff through, for example, our Internal Scholarship Program, Silver Service Fine Dining Training, and Diploma in Leadership and Management. We have also introduced a Staff Wellbeing@Monte Program such as Pilates and Stretch Classes.

Therapists to Dietitians. A perfect example of this is the role of our Dietary Co-ordinators which has recently been recognised for excellence by the Federal Government through the receipt of a Better Practice Award. u RESEARCH, EDUCATION AND TRAININGOngoing investment in Research, Education and Training with partners such as Scientia Professor Henry Bodarty AO and UNSW helps identify better practice and refine education and training programs. We have also achieved considerable savings in staff training costs as well as more effective knowledge transfer since the introduction of our award winning iTraining Program which was developed in-house and which continues to receive growing interest from the industry in relation to our innovative approach to eLearning.

u CAPITAL INFRASTRUCTUREFinally, ongoing investment in our capital infrastructure has occurred across all of our campuses ranging from new carpeting to furniture to major refurbishments. As mentioned in the President’s report, the exciting news of approval from the NSW Department of Planning to expand at Randwick heralds the beginning of the next major capital project for the organisation.

To further support our strategic direction, we have also reviewed our marketing plan in line with our 3 core businesses: homecare (including adult day care services), residential care (including respite care) and Seniors’ Living Apartments. Details of our marketing plans will be available in the coming months.

HOMECARE Marketing our homecare services has gained even greater importance since the Government announced changes to come into effect early next year.

In February 2017 supply restrictions that currently apply to the provision of Government subsidised homecare services will be removed. The provision of funding packages by the Government has, to date, been highly controlled and has rarely met the actual demand for services.

For this reason, many older people who have been assessed and who are eligible to access a funded package are unable to find a provider that has a package available. This is certainly the case for Montefiore’s HomeCare service which, despite having an allocation of 96 packages, is often unable to provide care services on a subsidised basis to a particular client because of the lack of an available package at the time.

Montefiore supports the removal of restrictions on supply, since its inception in 2009, our accredited homecare business has experienced strong demand both on a Government subsidised basis as well as a fee for service basis.

Whilst any major change to Government regulation, such as the upcoming changes to homecare, is not without risk, we are confident that we are well prepared for the challenge.

Systems and processes are now in place such as: a dedicated 1-800 care hotline available 24/7, inter-disciplinary skilled co-ordinators, scheduling and tracking software, access to more than 200 Allied Health services including our wellness and hydrotherapy centres at Randwick, and of course Club Monte and the Burger Centre. All of this will allow the HomeCare team to hit the road running come February 2017.

IN APPRECIATIONAs always, I would like to acknowledge the efforts of my Leadership Team and all the senior managers within the organisation as well as over 1000 staff members that are dedicated and committed to the wellbeing of our residents and clients.

Our volunteers are also a valuable part of our workforce and I thank them for donating their time and skills to enhance the quality of life of our residents. Additionally, those people in the community who support us through bequests, donations and memberships – you have my deepest gratitude.

Thank you Rabbi David Rogut OAM, and Rebbetzin Vicki Rogut for the spiritual and cultural support and guidance you provide our residents, staff and family members.

My personal thanks go to the Home’s President, David Freeman AM, and the other members of the Executive and Board for their guidance and support.

Finally, I’d like to sincerely thank my Executive Assistant, Lynn Mele, who after 15 years at the Home has recently retired from her duties. Her dedication and tireless commitment will be greatly missed.

TREASURER’S ANNUAL REPORT FY2015-16

‘WE HAVE NOT SEEN THE END OF THE GOVERNMENT’S

DETERMINATION TO CONTAIN EXPENDITURE.’

The Montefiore Home operates within a complex and highly regulated financial model which is sensitive to a number of internal and external factors which at times are outside of the organisation’s control. In residential aged care, for example, income is derived from a combination of resident contributions and Government care subsidies.

With regard to resident contributions, a significant proportion of this income comes from the proceeds of investing refundable accommodation deposits held on behalf of residents. Understandably, the current economic environment with historically low interest rates has a material impact on the level of income generated from this source.

In relation to Government care subsidies, these have been subject to the effects of tightening Government fiscal policy for many years and particularly over the last 5 years. During this period indexation applied to care subsidies at the beginning of each financial year has been inadequate and well below the actual increase in cost associated with providing care and services.

In addition, Government instigated changes to the Aged Care Funding Instrument (ACFI), the tool used to allocate care subsidy funding, has resulted in a reduction in funding in real terms, particularly for those requiring complex health care.

As you can read later in my report, we have not seen the end of the Government’s determination to contain expenditure with further changes to the funding tool anticipated to have a significant impact on the level of care funding provided during the current 2016-17 financial year and beyond.

CONSOLIDATED RESULTNotwithstanding the challenges noted above, I am delighted to advise that the organisation returned a consolidated surplus of $9.659 million for the financial year ending 30 June 2016, before depreciation and other adjustments.

This is a pleasing result, particularly when you take into account the large number of residents with limited financial means and who are only able to contribute a portion of the aged pension towards the cost of their accommodation and care.

Montefiore has a proud tradition of providing exceptionally high standards of care to the elderly of our community regardless of the

older person’s financial means. This philosophy strikes at the heart of Montefiore’s charitable endeavours and has earned the Home the reputation of not only being one of the finest aged care providers in Australia but also one of its most respected benevolent institutions.

All residents, irrespective of their financial means, have access to the Home’s full range of clinical and support services. This included access to Allied Health services such as Physiotherapy, Social Work, Creative Arts and our outstanding Cultural and Spiritual services.

Following the inclusion of depreciation, which totalled $8.702 million, a reduction in the market value of financial assets as at 30 June 2016 of $3.065 million and minor adjustments relating to the sale of financial assets and a modest income tax liability, the Home returned an overall deficit of $1.737 million.

The reduction in the market value of financial assets relates to the Home’s listed investments and reflects the volatility of the market and the correction being experienced at the time of the revaluation. In the previous two years the listed investment portfolio produced capital growth of $7.418 million.

With regard to the modest income tax liability, this relates to National Nurses Plus, a labour hire firm of which the Home owns a majority interest.

INCOMEGovernment subsidies remain the largest single income source and contributed $45.025 million or 47.1% of total revenue. This was closely followed by income from client fees and associated accommodation payments which totalled $27.961 million or 29.2% of total revenue.

In relation to income derived from the investment of refundable accommodation deposits, during the year the Finance Committee reviewed its investment strategy and rebalanced the spread of its investments between cash and listed securities whilst ensuring at all times that the overall portfolio complied with the Home’s Investment Management Strategy and the Government’s prudential requirements.

I am delighted to advise that the strategy was highly successful with income from investment sources totalling $16.989 million for the year or 17.8% of total revenue.

Bequests contributed $2.895 million towards the overall fundraising receipts of $4.660 million or 4.9% of total revenue. Sundry other income accounted for the remaining 1.0% of total revenue.

I remain extremely grateful to donors and benefactors whose generosity helps to support the many financially disadvantaged residents currently being cared for by the Home.

EXPENDITUREThe provision of aged care services is extremely labour intensive. Approximately 77% of the Home’s entire operating expenditure relates to the wages paid to our staff. This is similar to the proportion experienced in previous years and is relatively consistent across the industry.

Catering and cleaning supplies, utilities (power & gas), care supplies and property maintenance are the next most costly expenses and collectively accounted for 18.6% of total expenditure.

STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL POSITIONThe Home’s Statement of Financial Position (Balance Sheet) remains exceptionally strong with net assets of more than $321 million as at 30 June 2016.

The Home continues to have no external debt apart from the refundable accommodation bonds and interest free loans held on behalf of residents and which represents 93.9% of its total liabilities. This is a remarkable achievement and would compare favourably with the best performing corporate institutions.

In addition to its listed investment portfolio, which represents about 19.8% of total assets, the majority of the Home’s liquid assets are invested with major banks on term deposit.

Over the past 2 two years the Board has taken advantage of the buoyant property market by auctioning a number on non-aged related investment properties which have realised sales figures well above recent valuations. This highly successful strategy, which has now been finalised, added around $34 million to the organisation’s cash holdings which represented a net overall capital gain of more than $7.1 million.

The high level of liquidity represented by cash and cash equivalent deposits ensures that the Home can comfortably refund accommodation bonds as and when necessary.

THE YEAR AHEADAs mentioned earlier, the Government has announced further changes to the ACFI funding tool, the first of which occurred on 1 July 2016 with the next, and more significant change, occurring in January 2017.

The result of the above changes is estimated to reduce critical care funding in real terms by $3.1 billion over the next 4 years. The changes have specifically targeted funding provided to those requiring complex health care, including those with chronic pain, degenerative disease, severe arthritis and complex wounds.

Montefiore is not immune to the impact of reduced Government funding. Whilst the Government has announced that changes to ACFI will only apply to new residents admitted after the implementation of the changes or to those whose care needs change overtime, it will clearly have an impact and challenge our ability to maintain the high standard of care and services the community expects.

Whilst the increasing frailty of our residents, which will naturally attract higher subsidy levels overtime, helps to dilute some of the impact of the Government changes to ACFI, the reality is that we are being asked to do more care with less funding. For this reason it is essential that we continue to receive the community’s ongoing financial support.

WITH THANKSManaging the financial affairs of an organisation as large and complex as the Montefiore Home requires a dedicated and highly professional team. In this regard I would like to thank the Home’s Director of Corporate Services, Andrew Kew, Chief Financial Officer, Nick Pezikian, and the members of the Finance Department for their assistance during the year.

On behalf of the Executive and the Board, I would also like to thank our benefactors, volunteers, Ladies’ Committee and other supporters of the Home for their efforts and continued support.

STRATEGIC PLAN UPDATE

CERTIFYING PHILOSOPHY OF LIVING

‘THE HOME HAS RECENTLY INTRODUCED A STAFF POL UNIT CERTIFICATION PROGRAM COMPRISING OF 6 KEY AREAS A CARE UNIT MUST REVIEW AND IMPLEMENT IN ORDER TO BE POL CERTIFIED.’

Our Philosophy of Living (POL) strategy is now into its second year both for our residential and HomeCare Services. In a world where there is greater emphasis on personalisation, POL is based on one’s way of life with the main focus on providing residents and clients with greater choice, dignity and wellbeing. Representative initiatives* currently in place to support POL include: greater choice of wake-up times, flexible shower times, extended meal times, revised cleaning and laundry times, and more meaningful activities. As part of this and in late 2015, the Home recognised Food Services with a POL award for the Department that has made the most changes to their day-to-day services in line with the objectives of POL.

In addition, the Home has successfully embedded a Staff Rewards and Recognition Program for staff members who demonstrate examples of enabling greater choice, dignity and wellbeing for our residents and clients. Such staff members can be nominated by residents, volunteers, families, their manager or colleagues. All winners are recognised at staff barbeques throughout the year, presented with an award certificate, and select a gift from a range on offer.

As with anything new, POL continues to evolve based on feedback from staff, residents, clients, families and other stakeholders. “To ensure support for the organisation’s POL strategy, the Home has recently introduced a staff POL Unit Certification Program comprising of 6 key areas a care unit must review and implement in order to be POL certified,” commented Alasdair MacDonald, General Manager Business Innovation and Quality.

The 6 areas include:

• Staff rosters - improves consistent and familiar staffing within the unit neighbourhoods

• Rising, showering, settling patterns - encourages residents to rise, shower and sleep within their normal life rhythms

• Revised meals, cleaning and laundry times - to better support residents’ individualised rising/showering/settling patterns

• Flexible activities and appointments - to better support residents’ individualised rising/showering/settling patterns

• Focused Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) - cross-departmental staff to ensure individualised choice, dignity and wellbeing is being maintained for all residents/clients

• Stakeholder engagement - engaging with residents, clients, relatives, staff, volunteers, etc.

Through these 6 areas of certification, a consistent POL approach is supported by the POL framework which includes the Neighbourhood Model of Living, IDT and Integrated Governance.

*may not apply to every unit

Our Strategic Plan continues to be the foundation for our day-to-day operations focused around 6 key areas with a status update shown herein. Support from the community and investment in the Home ensures ongoing growth for Montefiore resulting in cutting edge products and services for care recipients and staff.

able to continue providing excellent care to our aged community in a world class environment.”

The Home has chosen to name significant areas of the Randwick Campus in grateful recognition of these stalwarts of our community.

Our annual membership increased in number again this year. With membership we are able to offer the community a number of benefits, including being eligible to vote at the Home’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), updated information about our interesting events and developments through our LIFE publication and the Annual Report, invitations to special Member functions and activities; and automatic membership of the beautiful Cyril Rosenbaum Synagogue in the grounds of the Hal Goldstein Campus at Hunters Hill, and the Halevi Synagogue at the Randwick Campus.

Once again several Montefiore supporters were bestowed the honour of Life Governorship as they stepped up their donations thus demonstrating commitment to the Home. Our Junior Life Governor Program continued to be a means of involving the next generation. Meanwhile, several generous contributors honoured their commitment to perpetual scholarships for further education and continuous improvement for our valued staff to further enhance their skills.

Our first Jazz in The Grounds evening took place at the Randwick Campus with the wonderful sounds of The John Morrison Swing City Big Band with special guest Emma Pask, and with guest appearances by Moriah College’s senior music students who all but stole

the show. The evening included New York Deli style food ably catered for by Montefiore’s Hotel Services Team. The evening was a huge success.

The Yom Kippur Appeal, Ben’s Story, was overwhelmingly well received and gave people a sense of the many moving stories of our residents. This important initiative gives the community an opportunity to support our religious and spiritual endeavours thus improving the quality of life of our residents.

Another exciting new initiative this year was our Silver Ribbon Tea Club campaign. By donating the cost of a cup of tea a week or perhaps a few cups of tea a week, Montefiore assists in supporting The Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing (CHeBA). Through their dementia research hopefully one day they can find a cure to what is unfortunately the fastest growing disease in our aged population. On joining the Silver Ribbon Tea Club one becomes a part of an exclusive group of members who regularly receive newsletters with the latest on CHeBA’s work and how it relates to our Home as well as other innovations improving the care and services for our residents. Members will be invited to a series of talks throughout the year which will be both educational and entertaining, and be eligible to attend all future Silver Ribbon Tea Club events free of charge.

FOUNDATION

‘IT IS THANKS TO THE FORESIGHT OF PEOPLE LIKE THE LATE MR GONDA, THAT MONTEFIORE IS ABLE TO CONTINUE PROVIDING EXCELLENT CARE TO OUR AGED COMMUNITY IN A WORLD

CLASS ENVIRONMENT.’

At Montefiore we have a long tradition of proudly calling many members of the Sydney community our friends and family. We are grateful for their many major donations, gifts in kind, Simcha donations and bequests which enable us to provide ongoing care delivery to our community, as well as to build

further accommodation to provide for our ageing population.

We are also pleased to honour our donors in a myriad of ways. Our valued friend and resident, the late Karoline Zolshan, left her legacy with a most generous bequest. We are also extremely grateful to her family who

have been incredibly supportive of the Home and its vision.

Another significant bequest was made by the late Mr John Gonda. David Freeman AM, President of Montefiore Home said, “It is thanks to the foresight of people like the late Mr Gonda, that Montefiore is

This year we also began the expansion into the community of our longstanding Life Story Program, which continues to give our residents the opportunity to tell their stories, make new friendships and spend valuable time with our Life Story volunteers. The program is being offered to friends of Montefiore living in the community and wishing to relate their life journey to be published for themselves and their families, and as a record of our community.

Montefiore’s Volunteer Program continued to grow with its commitment to our Philosophy of Living (POL) providing choice, dignity and wellbeing for our residents. The program, operating

across all 4 campuses and the Day Centres, is proud to have more than 550 active volunteers committed to a myriad of programs.

As always, volunteers were recognised at the annual function acknowledging each volunteer’s dedication and commitment. This positive acknowledgement enhances their day-to-day enjoyment and growth in their role. Each year we also celebrate National Volunteer Week with a program that includes training, socialising and entertainment. It is yet another opportunity for Montefiore to thank its strong army of volunteers for the work they do and the difference they

make to our residents and to the broader community.

To coincide with this year’s National Volunteer Week we launched volunteer business cards. There are many benefits to this new initiative, involving volunteers, residents, families and prospective volunteers including:

• A volunteer is acknowledged as an important member of the team

• We acknowledge that volunteers are our very best volunteer recruiters, so the business card will be a useful tool for introducing new volunteers

• A volunteer will have an official card to give people who ask about

their volunteer work and how they may also become involved

• A volunteer can place his/her own recruitment message on the card

• A volunteer can leave the card in the room of a resident, which lets them and/or their families know a volunteer visitor has dropped by.

Leaving a business card empowers volunteers so they feel their visit was noted should a resident not be available.

The Ladies’ Committee continued to make a significant contribution to the Home. Their fundraising, presence and commitment to the Home is invaluable. Amongst their initiatives this year was the introduction of EFTPOS machines to the Randwick and Hunters Hill Boutiques. This initiative has had a positive impact on sales and of course the residents, families, staff and volunteers enjoy an added sense of choice and wellbeing. Funds raised by the Ladies’ Committee contribute toward our award winning Staff Holocaust Awareness Training Program which in turn benefits our residents.

The Hospital Visiting Program continued to make our hospitalised residents feel they are not forgotten by their Montefiore family.

The Volunteer Department also supported students who fulfilled their community service commitments and The Duke of Edinburgh Award Program. Furthermore, Montefiore provided field work placements for tertiary students.

Meanwhile, our Intergenerational Program allowed students from many local schools to interact with our residents in different ways. More than 60 students from Moriah, Emanuel, SCEGGS Redlands, Sydney Girls, Randwick Girls, St Ignatius, St Aloysius, Loreto and Meriden visited and shared their time at our campuses after school

each afternoon. The students also immersed themselves in the rich and significant history of the residents’ lives. Sharing meaningful experiences, building friendships and caring were the great outcomes. Montefiore’s Volunteer Manager, Hazel Stein commented, “Research shows that children who don’t have enough opportunities to interact with grandparents may have negative feelings about being old. If, however, children have enough contact with older people, they have more understanding about ageing.”

One of our significant and successful Intergenerational Programs was the Randwick Girls High School Living Historian Program. Year 10 History elective students were offered a special opportunity to interview residents from our Randwick Campus. This wonderful program offered the students a chance to

learn about history from the elderly who have personally experienced or witnessed many historical events. Before meeting the resident the students had an introductory session about Montefiore. Each fortnight, 22 students interviewed residents about their life experiences, their childhood, education, time during the war and their post war lives in Australia. “During these sessions the students developed a warm relationship with their residents, heard their personal experiences and had the unique opportunity to ask questions whilst discussing some life values and recent world events,” said Rene Ichilcik, Montefiore’s Community Relations Co-ordinator.

With appreciation, we thank every one of our valued friends, families, volunteers and generous donors for your ongoing support.

RELIGIOUS AND SPIRITUAL LIFE AT MONTEFIORE

‘FROM THE TIME OF ADMISSION, A RESIDENT AND THEIR FAMILY ARE ASSISTED

ON A JOURNEY OF EXPERIENCES AND OPPORTUNITIES TO ENABLE THEM TO

FEEL SPIRITUALLY, CULTURALLY AND RELIGIOUSLY FULFILLED.’

The Department of Health has recently released guidelines for spiritual care in aged care. These guidelines are the first in the world to focus specifically on the spiritual needs of older people with Australia being at the cutting edge of research in this important area. These guidelines recognise that the spiritual dimension is an important aspect of holistic care in the context of individuality and diversity and have been developed through a rigorous process of stakeholder engagement and

consultation through focus groups, interviews and surveys.

Spiritual care is an integral aspect of a person-centred, or holistic, model of care.

Residents and staff at Montefiore are encouraged to actively participate in the development of our Religious, Spiritual and Cultural Life Program. A comprehensive program continues to be developed which ensures that all aspects of a resident’s spiritual, cultural and religious wellbeing is considered

from the time a resident enters Montefiore until after they leave.

Each resident’s specific needs are identified and a Spiritual Care Plan is put in place. This is to cater to each individual’s level of observance and make their experience specific to their level of religiosity in a meaningful and relevant way.

Social Workers meet with the families to facilitate Advance Care Planning enabling residents to document their end of life wishes.

Rabbi and Rebbetzin Rogut reciting a blessing with residents at Montefiore’s Hunters Hill Campus

There is now a large body of emerging evidence showing that pastoral and spiritual care is an essential part of holistic care for everyone, particularly older people including those with dementia.

Religious services, engaging discussions, visiting Rabbis and other activities are offered taking into account the different religious observances of our residents.

Every Jewish festival is celebrated as it would be in any modern orthodox home so that each resident can engage in their religious beliefs as they would if they were still in their own home. Festivals allow our secular residents the opportunity to revisit childhood experiences with

many of them reconnecting with religious beliefs and customs.

Education of our staff is ongoing with a focus on Jewish rituals, traditions, kashrut, palliation, burial and mourning. Our specialised Holocaust Awareness Training Program provides support for staff caring for residents who are Holocaust survivors.

Our Spiritual Dean has an open door policy for residents and their families to discuss any issues and assist in any phase of their Montefiore journey and afterwards.

The Religious Department encourages families to hold a memorial prayer service at the Home so that residents and staff are able to attend. A Remembrance Service, Zikaron is held monthly on all Montefiore campuses to remember those residents who have passed and allow other residents and staff to have the opportunity to pay their respects.

We continue to provide families who have lost a loved one, a Wishing You Long Life kit. This contains a 7 day memorial candle and comprehensive booklet explaining what the family are going through as well as offering them the necessary prayers to say at the funeral and afterwards, and information on bereavement services available.

Rabbi David Rogut OAM, Montefiore’s Spiritual Dean says, “From the time of admission, a resident and their family are assisted on a journey of

experiences and opportunities to enable them to feel spiritually, culturally and religiously fulfilled. This supports Montefiore’s Philosophy of Living and offers choice, dignity and wellbeing to every resident regardless of their level of religious observance.”

This year the Religious Department also embarked on a joint initiative with Jewish House to bring a Shabbat experience to those members of our community spending Shabbat in hospital. Shabbat bags which included, a bottle of grape juice, a Kiddush cup, Shabbat candles, a sweet snack, Havdalah spices and a Shabbat prayer card, were delivered to members of our community including our own residents in hospital. We further collaborated with the Centre on Ageing (COA) to deliver the Shabbat bags with Meals on Wheels during the week of Purim and also extended the gift to the Burger Centre and our HomeCare clients.

We received exceptional feedback from recipients. Our wonderful volunteers also assisted with the packing and distribution of the bags. The bags are on sale at our Randwick and Hunters Hill Campuses and make a great gift for those planning to be away from home for Shabbat.

Our Religious, Spiritual and Cultural Life Program is constantly evolving and offering our residents and HomeCare clients a holistic experience that stimulates their spiritual wellbeing.

MONTEFIORE AND CHEBA RESEARCH FOR A BETTER TOMORROW

UNSW Scientia Professor Henry Brodaty AO and winner of the ‘Nobel Prize for Ageing’ at Montefiore’s Silver Ribbon Tea Club Launch

It is only fitting that this year’s update should start with congratulating Montefiore Chair of Healthy Brain Ageing, and the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing (CHeBA) Co-Director, Professor Henry Brodaty AO, on winning the ‘Nobel Prize for Ageing’ - the Ryman Prize for 2016. This international prize recognises Professor Brodaty’s outstanding career in researching dementia in particular, improving care in nursing homes, General Practitioners’ (GPs) diagnosis and management of dementia, and management of behavioural

and psychological symptoms of dementia, as well as how to prevent cognitive decline with ageing.

In partnership with CHeBA, Montefiore has provided essential support for this, both through the creation of the Montefiore Chair of Healthy Brain Ageing, awarded from 2012 to 2017, and through ongoing projects conducted on-site with CHeBA researchers to improve the lives of its residential population. With the launch of our recent Montefiore Silver Ribbon Tea Club, funds raised through this initiative contribute towards

enabling the Home’s continued partnership with CHeBA.

HALTING ANTIPSYCHOTICS IN LONG TERM CARE (HALT) In January 2014, Montefiore commenced participation in the HALT research study led by Professor Brodaty. The purpose of this study was to reduce the use of antipsychotic or neuroleptic medication in residential aged care whilst increasing person centred care and non-pharmological approaches. The study was undertaken because

it had been shown that taking these medications for longer than 12 weeks provides little benefit for treating people living with dementia and is associated with a risk of adverse effects. Previous research had also shown that in some circumstances use of these types of medications have been prescribed inappropriately (Hosia-Randell & Pitkala, 2005).

In consultation with the resident’s family, the resident and the supervision of the General Practitioner, 4 units engaged in the HALT project across the Montefiore campuses. Twenty nine residents were enrolled as participants although not all of these progressed to deprescribing of antipsychotic medications. Case conference meetings were held in the interdisciplinary team format to ensure we had an in-depth behavioural history of each participant and we explored team strategies to manage such behaviours due to cognitive impairment. This resulted in a decision to deprescribe the antipsychotic medications to 15 of the 29 residents. Outcomes for these 15 residents ranged from no change, destabilisation or significant functional improvement and enhanced quality of life. We have also identified that education provided to staff during this project has had a positive impact on staff with ongoing education sessions continuing to be offered.

We look forward to receiving official feedback from CHeBA on this research project as a whole and will report in due course.

INTEGRATED COGNITIVE AND SENSORY PROGRAM (ICSP)This research project has focused on the effect of an ICSP in a residential aged care setting designed to reduce Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) experienced by high-care residents in a dementia specific unit by upskilling the care staff working directly with these residents. The principal investigator of the project is Sofia Venuti, Montefiore’s Leisure and Lifestyle Manager (OT); with the support of Professor Brodaty AO, Jacqueline Wesson B.App.SC (OT), MA, Associate Professor Lee-Fay Low (University of Sydney) and Professor Lindy Clemson (University of Sydney).

The project explored the effects of cognitive and sensory interventions on residents living with dementia. The program identified individual residents’ sensory and cognitive needs and addressed them by providing personalised sensory diets, tailored activities, exercises and communication strategies. It was piloted during 2014-15 with 32 residents in the Special Care Unit at Randwick. The intervention demonstrated statistically significant benefits such as lowering levels of anxiety, apathy and aberrant motor behaviour experienced by participants and lowering occupational disruptiveness. It was also shown to be feasible and acceptable to both residents and staff with no voluntary drop outs.

As this study was such a success it has been taken to a second pilot study which aims to examine the process of implementation of the program and outcomes in a larger sample with residents with more physical frailty and with and without dementia diagnoses, as well as better understanding of how the program impacts on staff care practices.

FAMILY/STAFF RELATIONSHIP IMPROVEMENT PROGRAMAs we write this article, we would like to announce our latest research project titled, the Family/Staff Relationship Improvement Program. Led by Lynn Chenoweth, Professor of Nursing at CHeBA, the University of New South Wales with the support of Professor Brodaty AO, this pilot study is to develop and pilot a Train the Trainer protocol which promotes collaboration and positive relationships between family and care staff to support residents during their transition into residential care, families’ abilities to cope and communicate effectively with staff, and staff ability to effectively communicate and support both families and residents. The pilot study will include Montefiore’s Social Workers supporting families, and staff trainers training and mentoring on the floor staff in Hostel at Hunters Hill, and both Nursing Home and Hostel at Randwick.

Thanks to Montefiore’s long-standing and productive relationship with CheBA we believe our research provides for a better tomorrow for our residents, families and staff.

‘WITH THE LAUNCH OF OUR RECENT MONTEFIORE SILVER RIBBON TEA CLUB, FUNDS RAISED THROUGH THIS INITIATIVE CONTRIBUTE

TOWARDS ENABLING THE HOME’S CONTINUED PARTNERSHIP WITH CHEBA’

One of the key components setting Montefiore apart as a leader in the aged care industry is our large and diverse in-house Allied Health team and its multiple award winning programs. Consisting of over 200 Allied Health professionals, from Physiotherapists to Social Workers and Creative Therapists to Dietitians this team is integral in supporting greater choice, dignity and wellbeing for our residents and clients. Through interdisciplinary team meetings, they provide unique and individualised feedback to the rest of the team improving the individually tailored care that supports our comprehensive Philosophy of Living strategy.

Our Dietary Co-ordinator Program led by our in-house Dietitian was recognised with a Better Practice Award. Meanwhile, our Eastern Suburbs Diversional Therapy Department has transitioned to the Leisure and Lifestyle (L&L) Department. With this our L&L services have evolved beyond the Diversional Therapy group standard to more individualised focus on matching activity demands to resident abilities in order to achieve an increased level of therapeutic engagement.

Further, our Alive in the Music program, inspired by the internationally renowned documentary, Alive Inside and the

Catalyst program on ABC earlier this year has continued to grow. Music has been shown to have tremendous benefits for our brain as we age, and it can be an effective intervention when working with adults living with dementia. In addition Music, Art and Dance Therapies are on offer across all Montefiore campuses.

Dental care continues to be supported by our in-house award winning program including a mobile dental clinic at Hunters Hill providing residents with monthly dental checks and treatment onsite.

Within our Physiotherapy Department at Randwick, the team have introduced

Exercise equipment specifically designed for the elderly, HUR is available to both residents and HomeCare clients for use at our Randwick Campus. In a research study, the Physiotherapy team at Randwick

compared use of traditional exercise equipment versus the HUR equipment over a 12 week period. Their research concluded that the HUR equipment was effective in improving our residents’ overall wellbeing, with Montefiore invited to present this information at the World Congress on Active Ageing Conference.

Be it clinical governance, education, mentoring or day-to-day clinical support, Montefiore’s dedicated Clinical Resources Department (CRD) provides critical clinical support and resources across the Home for residents, staff, Medical Practitioners, Allied Health and other specialists.

The team comprises of a Clinical Resources Manager and 3 Clinical Resources Officers (CROs) all of whom have had various clinical roles within Montefiore ranging from Deputy Care Manager, Acting Executive Care Manager, HomeCare Manager, Registered Nurse and Occupational Therapist. “These interdisciplinary roles within the Department assist the team to better understand and support their customers’ clinical needs,” commented Rita Lawrence, General Manager Clinical Services. “In addition, the team is well supported and works closely with our award winning Nurse Practitioner (NP) Program which is managed by our in-house NP,” added Rita.

For much of this year the CRD has focused on diversifying their clinical skills to enhance the clinical knowledge and competency of staff working directly with residents. This included:

• Assistant in Nursing (AINs) Medication Credentialing - enabled our AINs to be clinically certified to handle and administer medications

• Certificate IV in Training and Assessment - also known as Train the Trainer provided the CRD team with skills on how to provide staff with more structured education

• Immunisation Credentials - was provided through the Australian College of Nursing so that both residents and staff could be vaccinated safely within the Home under the supervision of our Nurse Practitioner and General Practitioners

• Dementia Specialisation - a consultation service to the units to ensure residents with specialised needs and challenging behaviours are appropriately assessed and that relevant measures are in place to support them

• Aged Care Funding Instrument (ACFI) Specialist Consultation - provided internal education to support staff with ongoing changes to ACFI and the associated documentation. This included the transition to our new client healthcare information management system

• Learning and Development - of clinical nursing staff which included the planning, selection and implementation of a new clinical healthcare information management system.

Additional programs co-ordinated throughout the year included education for Registered Nurses (RNs), Team Leaders (TLs) and AINs, as well as developing resources and clinical policies.

As in previous years, the CRD have also continued to manage:

• Infection Control - in particular our resident and staff influenza vaccinations, and supporting the units during periods of outbreaks such as influenza and gastroenteritis

• Specialised Nursing Procedures - ranging from chairing and advising on all clinical committees and working parties. In addition and in collaboration with the Customer Assurance Department, the CRD collated and analysed clinical indicator statistics across all 9 units to create the monthly clinical indicator report. From this report areas of risk and further education needs were identified and planning then made to meet these needs.

Our Nurse Practitioner Program offers additional advanced clinical support through:

• Extended clinical health care, within a person-directed model

• Applying advanced clinical knowledge to practice across stable, unpredictable and complex situations, and

• Managing our Reduction in Unplanned Transfers to Hospital (RUTH) Program which has included the purchase of an additional bladder scanner for our Hunters Hill Campus, which both the CRD and our NP are supporting through RN education.

With 740 residents, Montefiore’s kitchens on a given day produce over 2,000 meals. Add to that morning and afternoon teas, evening supper and day-to-day requests and that number more than doubles. The kitchen must also take into account the complexity of the older palate due to clinical needs such as allergies, texture-modified foods/fluids, adaptive equipment, and supplements to name just a few. These needs can change daily be it for a new resident or a change in care needs of an existing resident. Subsequently, the risk of getting things wrong is extremely high.

Yet within our industry much of this nutritional information is reliant on nursing staff communicating the ever changing dietary needs of residents to catering staff. Thankfully at Montefiore such nutritional care needs are typically

managed by Dietitians, Speech Pathologists and Occupational Therapists following referral from a Registered Nurse or other clinician. “In addition, Montefiore employs Dietary Co-ordinators whose primary role is cross departmental communication of residents’ dietary needs,” commented Jenna Rae-Hallam, Montefiore’s Dietitian.

Through their role, Dietary Co-ordinators manage a well-documented nutrition and dietetic communication process bridging the gap between nursing, kitchen, dining and Allied Health services. This is achieved through interdisciplinary management

of resident dietary information, point-of-contact for catering and nursing teams when dietary questions arise, educating catering staff on the delivery of correct meals, auditing, managing supplements and thickened fluids, assisting in streamlining referrals to Dietitians, Speech Pathologists and Occupational Therapists, and being a resident liaison.

“This is a unique role in the aged care industry and as such we are honoured to be recognised with a 2016 Better Practice Award from the Australian Aged Care Quality Agency,” added Janine Grossman, Director of Professional Services.

Have you ever wondered how a large organisation such as Montefiore safely delivers the correct meal to each and every resident? How does a staff member know what a resident is allergic to? What happens if a resident is on thickened fluids, or has other nutrition and hydration restrictions?

SOCIAL MEDIA...So what is it all about you may ask? Some of us cannot live without it; others don’t know what all the fuss is about. At the end of the day it’s here whether we like it or not. Many of us cannot go far without our mobile phones or seeing what’s going on in some form of social media. We must have the latest news update, check in to see what’s happening on Facebook™ or we may wish to watch a movie while catching the train home after work. We, as consumers, continue to demand ease of use and instant access to the latest information. No longer are the traditional print materials such as newspapers or having a company website enough.

Montefiore is not immune to these technological advances and the changing needs by which to communicate to its customers, staff and other stakeholders. As

such, much of our Communications Teams’ focus at the start of 2016 was on revamping our social media presence, primarily; Facebook, LinkedIn™ and YouTube™.

Subsequently, Montefiore launched its revamped general and HomeCare Facebook pages to keep residents, clients, families, staff and the community up to date with what we are doing instead of hearing things second hand or down the track. For staff and prospective employees, the Home’s LinkedIn page is a wonderful platform to showcase the rewarding work environment at Montefiore, its diversity of cultures and roles. Both Facebook and LinkedIn have also been successfully used to promote

a suite of resident, client, family and staff videos that show what it means to live and work at Montefiore. These videos can be viewed on YouTube or via our website on www.montefiorehome.com.au/what-we-do/our-videos

PEOPLE, CULTURE & LEARNING

At Montefiore, we recognise that our workforce is central to achieving our Mission and Vision. As part of our strategic planning efforts, the People, Culture & Learning team remain focused on implementing new initiatives so as to be recognised as an Employer of Choice by both existing and prospective employees. The opinions and feedback from our existing employees have been crucial in shaping these initiatives. In August 2015, we conducted our Employee Satisfaction Survey. The results indicated that Montefiore’s employees are highly engaged and deeply aligned with the organisation’s Mission and Values. They are proud of the facilities and services offered to clients and residents and believe that Montefiore is providing innovative, high quality care. Employees reported strong support through teamwork, training and a strong focus on safety. Compared to the sector average, a greater number of Montefiore employees are aware of the Vision and strategy for the future of the organisation, believe that Montefiore is continuously improving, and report good communication across locations and departments.

STAFF REWARDS & RECOGNITIONAs is reflected in the feedback from staff, and with a solid platform to build upon, 2015 saw the launch of the Home’s Rewards & Recognition Program that comprises of 2 key components, the Employee Appreciation & Innovation Awards as well as the Employee Rewards & Recognition Kits. This program was established to acknowledge and reward those staff who support the

Home’s Mission, Vision and Values. The kits are designed to encourage and facilitate recognition at a departmental level while our award recipients are recognised at staff sausage sizzles held at each of the campuses throughout the course of the year.

STAFF RECRUITMENT & SELECTIONIn May 2016, the Human Resources Department transitioned to an eRecruit portal. With all recruitment activities now centralised through this portal, this has delivered numerous efficiencies relating to the management of employment vacancies. Importantly, it provides

a more effective mechanism whereby current and prospective employees can keep abreast of new job opportunities as they arise and enables Montefiore to establish a talent pool to support its future recruitment endeavours.

LEARNING & DEVELOPMENTAccess to ongoing learning and career development opportunities have continued to be another important area of focus over these last 12 months, with the launch of several new programs and initiatives through Montefiore’s Learning & Development Department. Key initiatives include:

Diploma of Leadership and Management participants

It is no secret that the aged care workforce is facing a myriad of challenges, especially in relation to the recruitment and retention of appropriately skilled staff. It is predicted that by 2050, the aged care workforce will need to grow from 300,000 to 800,000, as the number of Australians expected to access services rapidly increases.

Professional Services Administration Assistant, Elaine Goodman receiving her certificate of appreciation from Director, Andrew Kew

• Internal Scholarship Program (ISP) - The ISP seeks to reward and encourage existing employees to contribute to the long-term success of the organisation by strengthening and enhancing our workforce. For 2016, through an application process, there were a total of 3 scholarships made available for staff interested in undertaking tertiary studies

• Diploma of Leadership and Management -The Northern Sydney Institute (NSI) has been engaged to deliver this nationally accredited program to 17 employees across the organisation. Additional places have also been made available to employees seeking to develop their knowledge and skills in a particular area, with the option available to undertake a specific module across the 13 month program

• Silver Service and Effective Functions - Sydney TAFE was engaged to deliver this customised training program. The program was designed to further develop the skills and knowledge of our dining room employees in the areas of preparing and operating an effective food and beverage function, wine appreciation and delivering silver service in a fine dining environment

• Certificate III Commercial Cookery - Sydney TAFE was also engaged to deliver this qualification to 9 employees working in kitchens across Montefiore’s campuses. This nationally accredited qualification aimed at enhancing the skills of our employees to prepare delicious gourmet meals was delivered in the Randwick production kitchen and incorporated a number of study tours at renowned venues across Sydney.

STAFF WELLBEING2016 also saw the launch of Montefiore’s new employee wellbeing program, branded Wellbeing@Montefiore. The focus and drive behind this is to provide employees with a variety of tools, tips and strategies to enhance their wellbeing and experience in the workplace. Throughout the course of the year, there were various themes and activities aimed at supporting staff wellbeing. Activities to date have included Stretch Classes, the launch of an 8 week Pilates Program and the roll out of Outdoor Kits for employees to enjoy with their colleagues on Montefiore’s beautiful grounds during their lunch break.

‘THE PEOPLE, CULTURE & LEARNING TEAM REMAIN FOCUSED ON IMPLEMENTING NEW INITIATIVES SO AS TO BE RECOGNISED

AS AN EMPLOYER OF CHOICE BY BOTH EXISTING AND PROSPECTIVE EMPLOYEES.’

HOMECARE AND DAY CENTRES

READINESS AND TECHNOLOGYOur focus this year has been to have everything in place for the changes due in February 2017. Montefiore HomeCare has relied on the significant internal capacity of Digital Services to implement a comprehensive technological system automating functions behind the scenes. In doing so we were able to reduce the staff time doing tasks that aren’t client centred.

We are now able to track the progress of staff in attending clients. This gives a greater transparency to the Service and translates into more accuracy in billing. Our solutions are innovative and give the Service some competitive advantage as the world of HomeCare and Day Centres enter a more commercial phase in February 2017.

CLIENT BENEFITSWhile we have put emphasis on technology for the Service, it provides a foundation for our future rollout of technology for our clients at home. From skyping family to easily calling for assistance or tracking of medical information, the world of technology is bringing more connection, safety, security and preventative health measurement to people living at home. Montefiore HomeCare aims to be an industry leader in this.

GROWTHWith all the activity in the technological world you could be forgiven in thinking we had taken our eyes off the ball for growing the HomeCare service. However, Montefiore HomeCare has continued to grow in the last 12 months. We are providing approximately 5.5 hours of service

per week to 150 clients. Some clients want as little as a 2 hour weekly shopping trip and some want 24/7 comprehensive care. The flexibility of the Service enables us to attend to both ends of the spectrum and everything in between. Our key has been exceptional case management by our Co-ordinators and experienced, helpful, Care Workers.

INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAMMontefiore HomeCare employs the Interdisciplinary Framework for overseeing clients’ wellbeing and general health. Our tertiary qualified Care Co-ordinators are Registered Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers and business experts. The weekly case review draws on the expertise of these disciplines for the benefit of the individual client and their situation. The end result is great solutions.

CLUB MONTEClub Monte at Hunters Hill has had an eventful year with the first initiative being a major

refurbishment. It has been many years since Club Monte had new carpet or furnishings. While the old furniture had been well cared for, the tables were heavy and hard to move, the lounges were outdated, and some things just didn’t match.

Keeping with the overall colour theme of the Hunters Hill Campus, the refurbishment began. The Library is now a comfortable space with modern shelving, and tables can be easily moved so that the room can adapt to whatever activities the clients are doing. If you called in you may find strength and balance exercise classes, ceramic painting, flower arranging, tai chi or everyone just enjoying lunch. The space is much better suited to enable a variety of activities and the clients are loving it.

The Government also made some changes in the reform process which will continue to be rolled out into 2018 for Club Monte. In the future, Day Centres and Day Therapy Centres will have a greater role as increasing numbers of people age and choose to stay at home.

Assisting people to live in their home as long as possible with choice and flexibility is the objective of Government for HomeCare and Day Centres, and the sentiment echoed by our clients.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE. BECOME A MONTEFIORE LIFE GOVERNOR TODAYWe invite you to become a valued Montefiore Life Governor. Life Governorship signifies a commitment to enhance the quality of life of the elderly in our community in order to optimise their choice, dignity and wellbeing.

Your support will enable Montefiore to continue providing an exceptional standard of service and care, while embracing the richness of Jewish culture and tradition.

Montefiore is a unique organisation proudly offering the full continuum of care from HomeCare to day centres to residential care. The generosity of our Life Governors enables us to provide the highest level of care for our elderly regardless of their financial situation.

More than 30% of our 740 residents are financially disadvantaged and unable to cover all or part of their cost of care. This results in a significant funding shortfall per resident per year.

In addition, close to 40% of our residents are Holocaust survivors with unique care needs. To best support our residents and their families we have developed an integrated training and care

program for our staff which equips them with the necessary skills to address these needs.

As a community, we are faced with a dramatic increase in an ageing population and a significant rise in the incidence of dementia. Within the Jewish community there are 5 new cases of dementia diagnosed every week. Demographic evidence shows that the number of aged people requiring our care will double over the next 10 to 20 years.

Montefiore’s residential campuses are currently operating at full capacity and have growing waiting lists. Your support will help us fulfil the future demands of our community for specialised accommodation and care.

Levels of Life Governorship are:

Bronze $5,000+ Silver $20,000+ Gold $50,000+ Platinum $100,000+

We are able to recognise major gifts by bestowing naming rights to various parts of the Home in order to honour the memory of a friend or family member in perpetuity.

Names of all Life Governors are written on dedicated honour boards at the Hal Goldstein Campus at Hunters Hill and the Randwick Campus.

For further information please contact Esther Wakerman on 02 8345 9110 or email [email protected]
