Transcript of Sir Isaac Newton
Sir Isaac Newton• First scientist to be
knighted.• 4 January 1643 – 31
March 1727.• Considered to be one
of the most influential people in human history. (as Most physicist are.)
• Wrote the Principia.
Newton’s Laws of Motion1) At body at rest (or at constant velocity) will remain at rest (or at constant velocity) until disturbed by an outside force2) Force = mass x acceleration3) Any action has an equal but opposite reaction.
You need to memorise these in the correct order.
Newton’s First Law
• At body at rest (or at constant velocity) will remain at rest (or at constant velocity) until disturbed by an outside force
• Also known as the law of inertia.
Newton’s Second Law: FORCE
• Force: The ability to do work. That is the ability to apply energy.• Force is also Newton’s Second law of
Motion.• The unit of Force is the Newton• 1 N = Force applied to shift 1 kg at an
acceleration of 1 m/s2. • Force is a Vector
Example:
What is the necessary force to move a 1500 kg Volvo at 3 m/s2 North. Solution
F= ma = 1500 x 3 = 4500 N North
