Located just south of Falls Park on the bike trail, the Greenway allows visitors to take in a free concert at the amphitheatre or sit back and relax. The Downtown River Greenway offers a variety of entertainment options along with a paved trail to enjoy the Big Sioux River. Turn Back Time and Preserve the PastPrairie Star Gallery is filled with centuries-old art forms displayed in a beautiful century-old building. It’s located in the heart of downtown Sioux Falls, on Phillips Ave. It’s a gorgeous place, with spectacular art and wonderful ambiance. We think you’ll agree with the 10,000 customers who have already visited – the gallery and its art are fabulous!

The exceptional variety of our art distinguishes Prairie Star Gallery from other galleries.n Original Artn Indigenous handmaden Authentic and high quality

The 500 artists represented are predominately from Northern Plains tribes. The artists’ tribal traditions influence their art and the stories they tell through their sculpture, paintings, bead and quill work, drums - everything. Our art comes from a time before the railroad and telegraph, when everything was hand-crafted and everyone was an artisan to some extent.

No matter the artists’ tribe or band, you’ll find our art to be incomparable. We’ve been told we have the finest gallery of Indigenous art, and the most knowledgeable staff, by people who have visited galleries in all 50 states. We won’t argue.

So stop in, put the world on pause, and experience the smallest gallery you’ll ever get lost in – Prairie Star Gallery.

Blood Run National Historic Landmark

Blood Run National Historic Landmark

ph. 605.673.4017parkswildlifefoundation.org/projects/BloodRun.aspx

Blood Run National Historic Landmark is just a short drive from Prairie Star Gallery in Sioux Falls. At first glance, the Blood Run National Historic Landmark (designated in 1970) looks like other hilly, wooded river bottom land - extraordinarily beautiful. But several things mark it as unique. First, it is like a natural island in a sea of residential and commercial development a few miles southeast of Sioux Falls straddling the Big Sioux River in Iowa and South Dakota. Second, on close and educated examination, there are signs of past human habitation everywhere on the forest floor and meadowlands. In fact, this is one of the oldest sites of long-term human habitation in the United States. Third, the site has been identified by the National Park Service in 2000 as having national importance worthy of Park development.

The river, abundant wildlife and wood for fuel, fertile flood plains, availability of catlinite (pipestone) and protection from winds made the area a crossroads of Native American civilization from 1300 - 1700 AD. Occupants were primarily Oneota Indigenous Peoples, including Omaha, Ioway, Oto and Yankton Sioux Tribes.

These tribes combined hunting and gathering with agriculture and lived in semi-permanent sites. By 1700, Blood Run was a significant cultural center for ceremonies, trade, and social purposes and frequented at times by as many as 6000 Oneota Native Americans. Several possible reasons for site abandonment around 1750 are debated, and might be resolved with additional research.

Burial mounds, storage caches, and signs of earthen enclosures remain. Some items of pottery, tools, trade goods and jewelry have been placed in safekeeping and more on private land need protection. The site is a time capsule of Indigenous culture. No other Oneota site of such size and integrity is known to exist in the United States.

Argus Leader RibFest

Argus Leader RibFest

Occurs annually in the Sioux Falls Arena Parking Lot E1201 N. West Ave.Sioux Falls, SD 57104ph: 605.367.7288www.sfarena.com/ribfest

Whether you’re 2 years old or 102, the Argus Leader RibFest has something for everybody. It’s easy to see why it has become “South Dakota’s Biggest Backyard BBQ!”

This annual BBQ festival takes place the weekend after Memorial Day and features live entertainment, kids activities, giveaways, promotions and a wide variety of local and regional entertainment.

First and foremost a food festival, RibFest is known for award-winning barbecue. Ribs, chicken, beef and all the sides produced by the world famous BBQ vendors. These entrepreneurs spend their lives traveling the world from cook off to cook off. They pride themselves on their recipes for BBQ, sauces, beans, coleslaw and all of the little things that make an outdoor picnic fun and exciting. Showmanship is a big part of the life these chefs lead. From the thirty-foot high banners and flags, to the inflatable cowboys and characters that decorate their booths, these cooks know how to put on a show.

At RibFest, the BBQ vendors actually compete for prize money. Each festival attendee receives a voting ballot in which they choose their favorite vendor-based not only on quality of food and service but on showmanship as well.

In addition to the world’s best BBQ, RibFest also features the best soft drinks, funnel cakes, potatoes, ice cream and other snack foods that kids of all ages love.

Motor Coach RegulationsBecoming acquainted with South Dakota motor

coach regulations and doing some pre-trip planning will save time for a pleasant tour.

1. If your vehicle consumes special fuel (diesel or liquid petroleum gas), you may purchase a special fuel user’s temporary trip permit for $20. It is valid

until you leave the state of South Dakota. If you plan to operate in South Dakota on a regular basis, you may file an application for a special fuel user’s license

with the Department of Revenue and Regulation. If you are licensed under IFTA program in your base state, South Dakota will honor that license.

2. If a vehicle is not displaying apportioned plates from an IRP State, the carrier can purchase a temporary trip

permit (Highway Use Receipt) from the Department of Public Safety for a $15 fee.

Temporary trip permits may be obtained by calling the South Dakota Permit Center at (605) 698-3925. South Dakota will honor the IRP plate and cab card as long as South Dakota is

indicated on the cab card.
