The Sins That Crucified Christ (outline) Intro: Mat. 27:22-23 “Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified. 23And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.” This passage depicts one of the most pathetic events ever recorded in the annuls of human history: the crucifixion of the Son of God. 1. When Jesus came in fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies all should have accepted him as the Son of God, but they didn’t. 2. Instead the Jews crucified him as a blasphemer. a. John 1:11 “He came unto his own, and his own received him not.” b. The Jews were looking for a promised Messiah, so when he came why did they reject him? c. Because of sin. 3. Let us notice some of the sins that led to the crucifixion of Christ, and how we can apply them; Heb. 6:6 “If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.” I. THE SIN OF IGNORANCE. A. Jesus on the cross; Luke 23:34 “Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.” B. Acts 3:17 “And now, brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers.” C. 1 Cor. 2:8 “Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.” 1. Often we want to overlook ignorance, never-the-less the Jews were still to be blamed for they were willfully ignorant. 2. Mat. 13:15 “For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.” D. This sin of willful ignorance is still with us today crucifying the Son of God anew. 1. There is no reason for anyone to be ignorant concerning God’s law today. a. 2 Pet. 1:3 “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:” b. 2 Tim. 3:16-17 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” 2. If men are ignorant today it is because of willful neglect. 3. Acts 17:30 “And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:” The Sins That Crucified Christ Page -2- II. THE SIN OF HATRED OF THAT WHICH IS GOOD. A. We could summarize Christ life by saying he went about doing good. 1. Acts 10:38 “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.” 2. John 10:32 “Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?” 3. John 15:25 “But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.” B. This sin is still crucifying Christ today. 1. John 3:19 “And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” 2. Evil is ever opposed to good and those who love evil hate the good. 3. Good or light is revealed in God’s word. III. SIN OF ENVY. A. Envy is discontent or unhappiness at the good fortune of another. B. Mat. 27:18 “For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.” C. John 11:48 “If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.” D. John 12:19 “The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.” E. Envy today is guilty of destroying Christ spiritual body. IV. SIN OF RELIGIOUS PREJUDICE. A. Have you ever thought that the people that crucified Christ were religious, but they were religiously prejudiced. B. The Jews were prejudice because they had prejudged in reference to God’s will. 1. Jesus condemned there errors and religious traditions. 2. Loving their traditions more than God’s truth the Jews crucified God’s Son. C. This sin still curses the world today. 1. So many today are prejudiced against the truth. 2. They too would rather cling to their creeds and traditions rather than God’s truth. V. THE SIN OF THE LOVE OF MONEY. A. Mat. 26:15 “And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.” B. Judas betrayed Christ physical body for $17.00, but today many betray Christ spiritual body for far less. C. Col. 3:5 “Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:” The Sins That Crucified Christ Page -3- D. 1 Tim. 6:10 “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” VI. THE SIN OF MORAL WEAKNESS. A. Pilate knew that Jesus was innocent and could have released him, but he was a moral coward. B. So often we are prone to say, “Oh, if I had only been in Pilate’s place, I would have released Christ.” But, I wonder. C. Christ is now before you as he was before Pilate. Will you accept him or crucify him anew?
