Nothing grabs my tentacles - andmy attention - quite like a brutal, blistering drum solo does. So JaimeLaFave probably didn't know whathe was getting into when he sentme his six-and-a-half-minute shredfest. He starts the solo with some
slick cymbal rolls and swel[s, transitions into a bunch of tom runs and
double bass combinations, launchesfor a moment into this slick Latin
thing, and then throws out a singlestroke snare slam. After I heard his
final burst of kick licks, I decided toget the man himself on the phone, and he told me a litt[e about his influ
ences. Portnoy? Definitely. Jordison? Most certainly. Adler? Ofcourse. Elvis? Well, umm, apparentlyso. When he was 1 2, LaFave went
to see the King in concert andcouldn't keep his eyes off the drummer's Ludwigs. He soon picked up apair of sticks, and the rest is, well, not quite history but certainly a workin progress. LaFave's now finishingup a CD with his metal band,Catafalque, and hopes to be soonsoloing in a city near you. Nevermind the King, people. LaFave hasentered the building!

Watch out Weckl! He may be pintsized, but behind the drums, Julian
AI[red is one heck of a percussivepowerhouse. Though just in firstgrade, he's already we[1 on his wayto hammering the skins like an oldpro - wailing all around the kit likeAnima[ on super-charged solos
.and developing his own funkifiedfeel for jazzy grooves, rockrhythms, and hip-hop beats. Theson of a drum teacher, Allred start
ed playing practically before hecould walk. And these days, at theripe old age of 7, he's alreadywowing festival and sporting eventcrowds, hanging with his dad'sbands, filling in for pops duringbreaks, and working on his firstCD. Now The Squid's no fortuneteller, but it's easy to see this kid's
future: all grown up, at say 11, sitting in at smoky jazz clubs, groovin' behind cats old enough tobe his great granddaddies who'veal[ been there, done that. EdMcMahon must be off somewhere
kicking himself that his TV showwent off the air, because this litt[eprodigy's the stuff Star Searchwas made for.
