Transcript of Single Belt Oven Conveyor Alignment
Project Information
Inspection Process:
Define the centerline of the oven conveyor structure. Utilize the oven centerline and gravity as the primary alignment reference for
all analysis and adjustments. Align the oven structure from end to end with respect to the oven centerline. Inspect all guide rollers
and vertically align with respect to gravity. Set the center point of the drive and tension drum to the oven centerline. Set the drive
and tension drums perpendicular to the oven centerline and level to gravity per the true rotational center of the drum. Complete a
surface inspection of the drive and tension drums and provide a report detailing the surface contour and drum diameters at the
inspected locations. Provide the site with alignment recommendations and/or corrections… monitor all adjustments and document
the final alignment of each component with respect to the established alignment reference.
Project Description:
Inspection and analysis of all components of a single belt oven conveyor system. Provide a final report including a graphical
representation of the conveyor system and all final alignment data.

* All guide rollers (depicted in green) were leveled in
reference to gravity within +/- 0.020” which is in reference
to the centerline of the drive and tension drums.
* Due to lack of adjustment… no consideration was given
to horizontal alignment.
Project Comments & Recommendations
Inspection Notes
The oven conveyor system center line was established and all components were inspected with respect to the oven center line
and gravity. The oven structure was aligned straight (+/- 0.075”) from end to end at each vertical support frame. The inspection of
the drive and tension drums revealed inconsistent surfaces, resulting in surface contour and drum diameters that exceed the
recommended allowable tolerance of +/- 0.005” guide a steel belt. The data was provided to project management and the
recommendation to replace the drums was made. The decision was made to proceed with the alignment and document all
measurement data. The final alignment of each component is detailed within this report.
The final inspection of the oven conveyor system utilized the oven centerline and gravity as the primary alignment reference. Both
drums were set level to gravity and perpendicular to the oven center line. Each drum center point was adjusted to the oven
centerline. Drum center to center was set within 0.053”. All guide rollers (with available adjustment) were vertically aligned with
respect to gravity and parallel to the drum centerlines. All mechanical adjustments were verified and final alignment data was and
has been provided for review.
Recommendations
To increase the run-time efficiency of the steel belt conveyor system additional consideration should be given to the following
items: (1) the allowable tolerance of the drum surface contours (2) discrepancies of the diametrical dimensions of the drive and
tension drums. The drive drum shows an end to end diametrical difference of 0.030” and a surface profile range of -0.047” to
0.048” which exceeds the allowable tolerance and may lead to tracking issues during operation. The tension drum shows an end
to end diametrical difference of 0.001” and a surface profile range of -0.082” to 0.044” which exceeds the allowable tolerance and
may lead to tracking issues during operation.
OMG recommends the addition of scribe marks on the drive and driven drum supports once the operational position of each drum
has been achieved. This will provide a baseline for proper alignment should any repairs become necessary without the benefit of
precision alignment support.
