How lovely is thy dwelling place, O Lord of Hosts! For my soul, it longeth, yea fainteth,For the courts of the Lord.My soul and body crieth out, yea for the living God.How lovely is thy dwelling place, O Lord of Hosts!Blest are they that dwell within thy house,They praise thy name evermore. How lovely is thy dwelling place!

WE SING OF HOPE

‘Hope’ is the thing with feathers—That perches in the soul—

And sings the tune without the words—And never stops—at all—

And sweetest—in the Gale—is heard—

And sore must be the storm—That could abash the little Bird

That kept so many warm—

I’ve heard it in the chillest land—And on the strangest Sea—

Yet, never, in Extremity,It asked a crumb—of Me.”

even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain. Alleluia. Amen

A Portal of Hope Joan Szymko (b. 1957)

There is a candle in your heart, ready to be kindled. There is a void in your soul, ready to be filled. You feel it, don’t you? Why do you stay in prison when the door is open wide? Come, come, whoever you are: Wanderer, wonderer, worshipper, infidel, come! Come, even if you’ve broken your vow a thousand times— Come. Come again. Open your hands, if you want to be held. Open your heart, light the fire within. Open your soul if you want to be filled. Ours is a portal of hope,Come as you are.

WE LONG FOR PEACE

“When despair grows in meand I wake in the night at the least sound

in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,I go and lie down where the wood drake

rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.I come into the peace of wild things

who do not tax their lives with forethoughtof grief. I come into the presence of still water.

And I feel above me the day-blind starswaiting for their light. For a time

I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.” –Wendell Berry

Vocalise Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943)Caged Bird by Maya Angelou

Read by Peggy Curchack

A free bird leapson the back of the wind and floats downstream till the current endsand dips his wingin the orange sun raysand dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalksdown his narrow cagecan seldom see throughhis bars of ragehis wings are clipped and his feet are tiedso he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill of things unknown but longed for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breezeand the trade winds soft through the sighing treesand the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawnand he names the sky his own

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill of things unknown but longed for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom.

PROGRAM NOTES

Johannes Brahms’ How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place needs no introduction. One of the most iconic and beloved choral works of the 19th century, it falls in the center of Brahms’ German Requiem and prepares the setting for this concert: namely that, all religions include a sense of moving into a holy place, a dwelling place, a place of praise that yearns of hope, love, and peace.

The delightful Jewish folk song, Hine Ma Tov, presents a seemingly simple message: Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all people could sit together in peace?

Longa Farahfaza, by Riyad al-Sunbati is a slow multi-sectional Turkish musical form, comprised of four short movements followed by a refrain, often utilized in classical Arab music.

American composer, Jeffery Ames continues this spirit of inclusivity with Let Everything That Hath Breath. This fabulous original composition in gospel and jazz style, profoundly implores everyone and everything to join together in praise.

Kurt Bestor’s Prayer of the Children has become one of the most recorded choral works of our time (over 100 at last count) and is heard often at special occasions, such as 9/11 remembrances, a yearly memorial services for Columbine High School Students and the Oklahoma bombing. Sadly, it immediately brings to mind the horrifying tragedy that continues to unfold in Syria.

Prior to the outbreak of war in the Balkans, Bestor lived in Sarajevo, falling in love with the local people while working with childre as a piano teacher. He wrote,

“Of course, I was always aware of the bigotry and ethnic differences that bubbled just below the surface, but I always hoped that the peace this rich country enjoyed would continue indefinitely. Obviously that didn’t happen. When Yugoslavian President Josip Broz Tito died, different political factions jockeyed for position and the inevitable happened - civil war. Suddenly my friends were pitted against each other. Serbian brother wouldn’t talk to Croatian sister-in-law. Bosnian mother disowned Serbian son-in-law and so it went. Meanwhile, all I could do was stay glued to the TV back in the US and sink deeper in a sense of hopelessness.

Page 15: SINGING · PDF fileWelcome! best call to God’s way ... Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel, Traditional arr. Moses Hogan (1957-2003) Didn’t my Lord deliver Daniel,

Singing City page 13

Finally, one night I began channeling these deep feelings into a wordless melody. Then little by little I added words....Can you hear....? Can you feel......? I started with these feelings - sensations that the children struggling to live in this difficult time might be feeling. Serbian, Croatian, and Bosnian children all felt the same feelings of confusion and sadness and it was for them that I was writing this song.”

Prayer of the Children has a special place in Singing City’s heart. We sang this song throughout the Balkans during its 2014 tour, including a benefit concert we presented for an orphanage in Sarajevo. The song is both a cry for help and a yearning for the return of love in a broken land.

Sama’i Hijaz Garip, by Goksel Baktagir is a multisectional composition common in Arab and Turkish music, comprised of four short movements (each called khana) followed by a refrain (taslim). Like a Child was arranged by Canadian composer Rupert Lang, who was the founder of the Vancouver Children’s Choir. Set for children’s choir, accompanied up by adult choir, it uses the metaphor of a quiet child to describe the human soul.

As the Full Moon, the Messenger is an arrangement of a traditional Arabic song known as a nasheed. This was sung to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), upon his arrival at the city of Yathrib in Arabia, now known as Al-Madinah after completing the Hijra in 622 CE. The Hijra is the emigration of Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his followers to the city of Medina in 622 CE, marking the first year of the Islamic calendar, 1 AH (anno Hegirae). The song is currently over 1400 years old, and one of the oldest in the Islamic culture.

Dr. Rollo A. Dilworth is Professor of Choral Music Education and Chair of the Music Education Department at Temple University’s Esther Boyer College of Music and Dance in Philadelphia, PA. He is an award-winning composer, conductor, and educator with vast expertise in African-Ameri-can music. In describing his arrangement of Shine on Me, he notes,

“Like many African-American spirituals, the melody is built on a pentatonic scale, and it utilizes a text that has multiple meanings. The original text of this spiritual can be found in the opening chorus:

Shine on me, Shine on me.I wonder if the lighthouse will shine on me.

“The second line of the text metaphorically represents a search for guidance and direction on both a physical and spiritual level. The additional text and melodies in this arrangement … create

harmonic progressions consistent with the African-American singing tradition.”

Vocalise is the last of a set of fourteen songs that Sergei Rachminoff completed in 1914. Composed long before “atmospheric music” came into fashion, the work’s wordless and hypnotically beautiful musical lines capture the spirit of Ivanovka, the country estate where it was composed. Though not attached to any particular sentiment, we felt it to be a splendid accompaniment for Mayo Angelou’s magnificent poem of hope, “Caged Bird.”

Joan Szymko describes A Portal of Hope as a reflection about how spiritual loneliness may be met with the exuberant embrace of acceptance—and of “beginning again” on the path of spiritual enlightenment. This setting of texts adapted from Sufi poet, Rumi was commissioned by the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Portland, Oregon, a church that is renowned for its diverse and hospitable membership.

The Boston Symphony Orchestra commissioned Randall Thompson to write The Last Words of David in honor of conductor Serge Koussevitzky’s 25th anniversary as its Music Director. Thompson found the text while leafing through a Gideon Bible in a hotel room during his research travels for College Music. Dr. Koussevitzky conducted the Berkshire Music Center Chorus and the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the premiere on August 12, 1949, at Lenox, Massachusetts. The work demonstrates Thompson’s lush, romantic style, the text supported by dynamics and glorious harmonies. Thompson takes a dramatic approach, with an emphatic first stanza, followed by joy and then calm.

Ffe Mwe Mwe Ffe is a Bantu phrase which means: they are us and we are them. In the composer’s words:

“In 2013 I led a drum circle at a Portland First Unitarian Church event where folks worked on making gifts for members of FUUC’s sister church program in Uganda. In preparation, I went looking for traditional Ugandan rhythms to introduce in the circle and came across this Bantu adage: ffe mwe, mwe ffe—‘they are us and we are them.’

Ffe Mwe Mwe Ffe begins with a simple unison call, the energy of community coming together for the common good grows with each interwoven and layered rhythm that enters; most important being the drum rhythm, gwanga mujje—‘come to my rescue.’ A soloist then introduces Mahatma Gandhi’s inspiring words, ‘be the change

Page 17: SINGING · PDF fileWelcome! best call to God’s way ... Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel, Traditional arr. Moses Hogan (1957-2003) Didn’t my Lord deliver Daniel,

Singing City page 15

you wish to see.’ The message of the work shines brightly: compassion begins when we see ourselves in each ‘other.’”

Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel and Walk Together, Children are two of the most celebrated of the 70 settings of spirituals arranged by Moses Hogan, whose life mission was to revitalize the true African-American spirit of the genre. Hogan was an Oberlin and Julliard trained pianist. Yet, along with André Thomas, he wanted to bring the plantation song back from cheerful parlor tunefulness to the essence of its origins, a well-known spiritual that quotes the Old Testament and also refers to concepts of judgment day in the Book of Revelation.

Od Yavo Shalom Aleinu is a song of Mosh Ben Ari, composed while in the band Sheva (Seven) and is sung in Hebrew and Arabic. Od Yavo Shalom Aleinu means “Peace will come upon us, yet.” A large hit in Israel several years ago, it has now come to symbolize a call for peace and an end to the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Verleih’ uns Frieden was composed, along with the Opus 23 Sacred Choruses, during the period following the composer’s first flush of public success with such undisputed masterpieces as the String Octet and the Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Between May 1830 and October 1831 Mendelssohn undertook a grueling tour which included stops at Munich, Salzburg, Linz, Vienna, Pressburg, Graz, Venice, Florence, Rome, Naples, Pompeii, Genoa, Milan and Geneva. By far the longest stay was in Rome, between 12 November 1830 and 10 April 1831, and it was there that he composed this prayer for peace, dated on the manuscript 10 February 1831. This soulful piece is a continuous, three-verse setting (the same text is heard three times) in four parts. Only the last verse utilizes the full harmonic possibilities of the choir, and does so with a warmth of expression that leaves one in no doubt that ultimate peace cannot be far away.

To my Old Brown Earth was composed by Pete Seeger in 1958 for the funeral of the editor of a radical newspaper. How fitting that a radical environmentalist and peace activist composed this song for that occasion. Seeger died at age 94, in January, 2014. One year later, celebrating what would have been Seeger’s 95th birthday, a grand concert took place in Minnesota’s Fitzgerald Theater. The producer of that concert, Larry Brown, wrote that,

“Pete Seeger was a giant of a man who walked humbly on this Earth. He changed the course of history by changing the lives of everyone he met. He inspired us all to be a little less selfish and

ABOUT SINGING CITY

Singing City was founded as an integrated choir in 1948 in Philadelphia by Dr. Elaine Brown. The Choir was born out of the Fellowship House movement, and has been deeply engaged not only in creating a community of mind and purpose in Philadelphia, but also in other civil rights and social justice movements since the 1950s. For over half a century, Singing City has been Philadelphia’s premier avocational chorus, committed to bringing people of diverse races, creeds and backgrounds together under the common purpose of music making.

In addition to its deep commitment to inclusion and community building, Singing City has consistently achieved the highest levels of performance practice and artistry. The chorus has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Leningrad Philharmonic, and Israel Philharmonic, and has to its credit a number of critically acclaimed national and international concert tours and festival appearances. The 90-member strong chorus is led by Artistic & Music Director Jeffrey Brillhart and continues to fulfill its original mission, which today encompasses an educational program for youth, the Singing City Children’s Choir, and programs for under-served populations.

Through Performance, Arts Education, and Fellowship,

Singing City is a force for social impact, bringing people together

and lifting the human spirit through the artistry of choral music.

more courageous in our giving. He carried the memories of the people in the songs he wrote, the songs he sang, the stories he told and the decisions he made daily to stand for justice from wherever he stood. He cared deeply for his neighbors, and we cared for him, because the entire world was his neighborhood. His kitchen table was filled with letters that arrived daily from those who loved him. He would separate those letters in piles and meticulously go through each one with handwritten responses in the margins or on postcards with a sketch of a banjo next to his name.”

SINGING CITY CHILDREN’S CHOIREMILY SUNG, Director

Emily Sung is thrilled to begin her inaugural year as the director of the Singing City Children’s Choir. Sung has worked for and sung with several Philadelphia choirs, including the Mendelssohn Club, the Philadelphia Voices of Pride, the Chestnut Street Singers, and the choirs of Christ Church Philadelphia. She currently serves as the Assistant Chorus Master at Opera Philadelphia and teaches on the conducting faculty at Temple University.

A native of New Jersey, Sung earned her MM in choral conducting at Westminster Choir College and her AB in history at Princeton University. She has been a conducting fellow at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, the Illinois Choral Conducting Symposium, and the Conductors Institute of Bard College. Her teachers include conductors Gabriel Crouch, James Jordan, Joe Miller, Amanda Quist, Joseph Flummerfelt, Andrew Megill, Paul Rardin, Harold Farber-man, and Mark Shapiro, as well as Philadelphia-based pianist Sandrine Erdely-Sayo and composer Benjamin C.S. Boyle. A versatile teacher and musician, Sung believes deeply that music and the arts bring incredible vibrancy into children’s lives, greatly enrich their education and learning potential, and are a vital force for building community.

The Singing City Children’s Choir (SCCC), is a choral music education and performance program open to children at the James Rhoads Elementary School in West Philadelphia and, beginning this fall, the Wissahickon Charter School in Germantown. Music from all styles and periods form the foundation for musical learning and serve as the basis for the curriculum. Concepts about music (melody, rhythm, harmony, timbre, dynamics, form, style and performance practice) and musical skills (singing, theory, sight reading, etc.) are taught throughout the rehearsals through singing, listening and analysis. Singing skill and musical understanding are essential components of the creative process and a fundamental resource basic to music education. The children perform throughout the year in concert with Singing City’s adult choir, on their own, and in collaboration with other arts organizations.
