MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTORMARK DUMEZ

There is something about a good summer rain that seems tochange things. The smell of blooming flowers and greenerysoaking up the gift of growth reminds me of possibility andpromise. We've recently witnessed a tectonic shift in cultureas the Industrial Age, some have said, has given way to theAge of Information. Old forms and functions have bent to newways of thinking and doing. In this play, Don and Kathy are inthe middle of their own changing worlds, as technology alterstheir career and personal courses.

Change, even positive change, can be challenging but can alsoinvite the same kind of glorious and happy feeling that a goodsummer storm does. After all, we are built for change, forgrowth and for possibility. Even those of us set in our ways, with the possible exception of Lina, can learn to adapt andeven thrive after the rain of change. Aristotle put it anotherway, “Change in all things is sweet.” And, in the case of thisshow, well worth singing about!

MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTORRANDAL HUBER

A remarkable serendipity has come to the Chemainus TheatreFestival. Theatre Angels Alf and Yvonne Pink have generouslygifted their private collection of 28 exclusive Arthur Vickersserigraphs. The pieces, all purchased directly from the artistover the past 30 years, are appraised at over $105,000 andcelebrate the incredible diversity of Mr. Vickers’ work.

This year the Chemainus Theatre will auction 10 of these artpieces. The select works are on display in the upper lobby ofthe theatre and we invite you to bid in person tonight or onlineat our website. The silent auction will run until November 16th

– the night of our annual benefit gala – though should youwish to take something home with you, there are ‘buy it now’prices available.

Thank you to the Pink family for this unbelievable gift and toArthur Vickers for your amazing contributions to Canadian art.For more information about the art pieces and this fabulousdonation of art in support of the arts, please visit our website. This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire your own serigraphby this iconic West Coast artist and, with 10 pieces available, one is bound to catch your eye. I certainly have my eye on one.

DIRECTOR’S NOTESTRACEY POWER

Singin’ in the Rain is a musical that inspires memory. Over thepast six months whenever I told someone I was directing thismusical, their face would light up and they’d immediately beginto tell me what they loved and remembered about the show.Laughter, love and heart are everpresent in this bright beautiful littlepackage, but also present is the moreconflicted idea of progress. Theentertainment industry has changed dramatically since thedays of “the silent picture” and “the vaudeville stage”. We asartists of theatre are constantly re-evaluating our relevance in

this new, ever challenging, culturallandscape. But no matter how fartechnology and progress take us,

there will always be one thing that remains unchanged; theshared desire for a great story. We are here as artists toshare this story with you; to inspire old memories and new!

Enjoy the show!

COOKIN’ UPA CLASSIC

THE CHEMAINUS THEATREFESTIVAL HAS ALL THE RIGHT

INGREDIENTS

V A N C O U V E R I S L A N D ’ S T H E A T R E G E T A W A Y

Ask people to describe Singin' In The Rainand you're likely to hear one word comeup again and again. “Classic.”

As both a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film(starring Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly),and an award-winning stage production, the show has earned its iconic distinction. From London to Broadway, thousandsof people have enjoyed the theatrical

musical'slight-heartedstory ofupheaval in the

saucy and stylish Hollywood movie bizduring the roaring 20's. Critics haveheralded the tour “a night of sheer delight. The perfect pick-me-up” (London's DailyTelegraph), while community theatresaround the world have donned their mostglitzy and glamorous flapper wear to stagethe Tinseltown spoof.

There's no denying the popularity ofSingin' In The Rain; its wide appeal is one

reason wechose themusical to

headline our summer schedule at theChemainus Theatre Festival. But classic? That was an idea we just had to explore.

What defines a film, play, musical – or atheatre for that matter – as a classic?Ask around, like we did, and you'll get anumber of answers...

“Classic theatre is about emotion. Showsthat have songs that please the ear, dancesthat please the eye, a story that touchesthe heart – or the whole combination– can endure. Classic shows make youfeel what is happening, regardless ofwhere you seat is from the stage.”

“A plot that evolves is the most importantpart in a show. There needs to be somediscovery and progression to draw peoplein and make them hang on for what willhappen next.”

“A classic show has an idea you knowfrom the past. It's reminds you of somethingyou've heard ordone or talkedabout before. There's acomfortabletheme that isunderstood andshared between everyone on stage andoff, no matter where they come from.”

THE SHOW HASEARNED ITSICONIC DISTINCTION

CLASSIC THEATREIS ABOUT EMOTION

V A N C O U V E R I S L A N D ’ S T H E A T R E G E T A W A Y

“I think it [a classic] has to do somethingdifferent for people to take notice. When aperformance can get people talking it hasimpact, and the whole production lives on.”“Classics are shows that you can watch

again and again – and each performanceis just as much fun as the last. They lastthrough generations and can be enjoyedequally by kids, parents, and grandparents– those are classics.”

Judging by the decades and decades ofexpertise behind these answers (and

more, from ourartistic andproductionteams, and staff),we discoveredfive key

ingredients that seem to make the perfectrecipe for an artistically classic experience:stimulation, evolution, familiarity, experimentation, staying-power.Does our applauded summer show fit the“classic” mould? Most definitely.

It has been 60 years since Singin' In TheRain first appeared on film, and 30 yearssince it debuted on the stage; now that's

endurance.The musicalpromises to“make 'emlaugh” and

does much more. Evoking love, deception, jealousy, humour and more feelings weall share and can't get enough of.

Will Don end things with Lina? Will Kathyget caught in the 'act'? Are you excited tofind out what happens when silent filmsscreech to a halt? Singin' In The Rain tapdances through its story, keepingaudiences rapt for the next twist in the tale.

How do you make it rain on stage? Whatmakes this show special? A stand-outmusical comes with all the show-stopping

challenges that only creative andengineering experimentation can solve.

With timelessness, emotion, creativity, comfort, and heart, our revered summershow has all the ingredients to beconsidered a “classic.” And we hopeyour entire Chemainus Theatre Festivalexperience is just as satisfying!

To everyone in our artistic and productionteams, staff, volunteers, and sponsors whocook up a memorable show, you have ourdeepestgratitude. And wethank all ourpatrons whohave come to taste the hummable tunes, exuberant dancing, comedic love stories, creative theatrics, and torrential fun ofSingin' In The Rain!
