This question raised by Picasso brought back memories of theart therapy sessions I once had with Ahmad (pseudonym). Ahmadwas a patient referred for art therapy some years ago. The imagesof his artworks greatly impacted upon me and strengthened mybelief in the art product as a reflection of self.

On the surface, Ahmad was a typical youth with dreams andaspirations of becoming a chef someday. When I first met him, hegreeted me with a broad grin. At that time, little was known abouthim, except for his multiple medical conditions and that he was afamiliar sight with the hospital staff. Ahmad used to attend aspecial needs school, but had to discontinue his education whenhis health deteriorated. His life was fraught with crises after crises.At a young age, his mother passed away. His father took todrinking and he was separated from his siblings. Probablyaggravated by the stresses in his life, his kidneys failed and he wasput on dialysis. Not long after, he developed further healthproblems including diabetes and high blood pressure.

I recalled at our first session Ahmad’s hesitation when Isuggested making art with some basic drawing tools, drawingpapers, magazines, glue, colour pencils, crayons, markers, etc.During that temporary pause, he had asked, “Draw what?” Isuggested he might tear some paper to make a collage. However,he surprised me by creating artwork on his own without requiringany further assistance from me. Upon finishing his artwork, heshared that he was very satisfied and pleased with his creation,which he identified as the moon and the sun. In spite of hischeerful demeanor, I felt disturbed by the hollow eyes seen on theimage (Figure 1). Having had his permission to share my view onit, I told him of my impression of his sun and moon as the two-halves of a mask, with the left as possibly his hidden side (actualfeelings), and his right as how he may have wanted others to see

him. After sharing my impression, I noticed the immediate changein his expression. He looked sad. He then revealed that he had noone to share his fears and feelings with before, and would try to behappy for others’ sake. He appeared relieved after disclosing histhoughts. It was there and then that a connection of understandingbetween me (the art therapist) and Ahmad (the patient) wasexperienced. The artwork facilitated further insights into hisdifficulties and concerns. In subsequent sessions, his artworksbecame an outlet for his hidden feelings of inadequacy, fears andsadness. Eventually, it also became a tool for him to gain insightinto his strengths and his source of hope for living.

In recounting this incident, I am reminded again of theuniqueness of an individual’s artwork which can express whohe/she is – his/her experience, feelings, values, beliefs, thoughts,etc. So, in making art, “Are we to paint what's on the face, what'sinside the face, or what's behind it?” Perhaps, only for art therapy,it is the latter question “what’s behind it” that the art therapistseeks to understand in order for the healing of the heart and soulto begin.

The Associate Artist ResearchProgramme (AARP) is a two-yearresearch residency at TheSubstation. Currently supportingfour Associate Artists, the AARPencourages the development ofinterdisciplinary art research,practice, and process. Two AARPevents are scheduled to take place in March, anexhibition by Grace Tan (kwodrent) and aperformance-lecture series by Bani Haykal.

Tim Zeelie asked The Substation’s Artistic Director, Noor EffendyIbrahim, about the AARP, and its two upcoming events.

TZ: The AARP is a relatively new residency programme, andprobably the first of its kind in Singapore. Why do you feel theneed to support process and research in art?

It’s not as much about supporting process and research in art,which The Substation has always been committed to, but moreabout identifying and executing sound strategies to sustain theseprocesses. And sustaining them has less to do with the economicside of things, and more to do with the need to nurture and instill asense of value and appreciation in artistic process and research insociety. The aim of the AARP is for artists to identify communitiesthat are not currently involved in the arts, and to collaborate withthem, and together recognise and articulate that art is not just aproduct, but a critical and effective tool of learning and unlearning.

TZ: Experimental in nature, Grace Tan’s MM is a research projectthat translates mathematical principles and musical structuresinto forms and prototypes. The upcoming exhibition will featureresearch materials, structures, and models in various stages ofdevelopment. Why do you think it important to exhibit, questionand critique works that are still under development?

It is important primarily because The Substation is not an artsvenue, but a critical and rigorous space for artistic discovery and

development. The Substation constantly reconfigures itself as anopen studio, supporting a varied and diverse range ofcontemporary art practices and disciplines. One of thefundamental beliefs here is that artists do not work in isolation.Constant open engagement and dialogue with other artspractitioners and interested members of the public are effectiveways of testing processes, forms of research and the developmentof artists’ works. This is an approach that contributes towards theidea of sustainability.

TZ: Bani Haykal’s rethinking music is a series of performance-lectures that seeks to deconstruct perceptions about music, andexamine the value and purpose in music’s ability to reflect identity.How do you think rethinking music will contribute to the waymusic as an art form has been perceived and treated in Singaporeand at The Substation?

I am hoping that rethinking music will remind us of how easy it isto listen. Seriously.

Art Glass Solutions Pte Ltd was established in 2008 to enrichthe lives of many through the creation of quality artworks. Sincethen, as Creative Director of the company, my practice as a glassartist has certainly changed. Previously I focused on being a‘production studio glass blower’; now predominately I undertake‘large art glass installation commissions’ as part of a larger team ofarchitects, interior designers, contractors and glass makers.

A recently completed commission in a private home inSingapore was created in response to a photo taken by the clienthimself. The photo became the foundation of the conceptualdevelopment and overall aesthetic of the artwork. The client’sinterest in photography and my interest in modern image makingprocesses and technology emerged as key concepts.

Traditional printing techniques used overlays of coloured dots tocreate an image, and now computers process images with squarepixels. My idea was to not simply reproduce the clients’ photo in alarger scale, but to re-interpret the image into another medium,accentuate the image making process by enlarging the pixel size andthen separating the image into squares to further highlight theprocess of image construction. Each panel becomes an abstractedcolour field in itself while together it creates the overall image.

Expanding and accentuating collaborations with other artists aswell as introducing the traditional glassmaking technique of glassengraving were important aspects of this artwork. I wanted tohighlight the beauty and simplicity of the engraved line on glasswithin the complexity of the laminated photographed image. Iasked Dominic Fondé, to respond to the client’s photo with a linedrawing, and as he was not told what the photo was of –landscape, cell structure or photo of outer space – his responsewas then an interpretation of the photo itself. This drawing wasthen scanned into the computer, broken up into 189 individualsections and printed onto A4 paper. Using these prints as a guide,Michelle Zheng drew the abstracted lines on each panel and thenengraved the lines on each individual glass panels. Throughout theprocess there were crossovers from hand drawn line, to computerrendered pixel, to ink jet printing to the engraved line.

The engraving appears to float in front of the computergenerated coloured pixel squares and can only clearly be seenagainst the darker areas of the image. In places the line seems to‘disappear’ as it seems that the hand skills of drawing disappearwith the introduction of new technology. Yet the drawn line is

remains a key element of art making and can be seen clearly inthe right light.

The combination of modern image making processes, new andtraditional glassmaking techniques and the skill / hand craft ofdrawing and engraving alludes to the changes occurring incontemporary art making as technology continues to develop.Hand making skills are disappearing as machines increasingly dothe job faster and better, especially in industries where precisionand accuracy are required and/or preferred. So where do artists fitinto these industries and modern day technological processes? Asan artist, how do I sustain a practice within current culture, massmanufacturing and modern day technologies?

One answer is that artists don’t only provide technique and skill,they more importantly provide the idea and develop the creativeconcepts to be presented in new and innovative ways. My SecretGarden, initially a response to the client’s interest in photography,the space in which the artwork was installed and my interest inmodern day image making. It emerged from the collaborativecreative process as an artwork with layers of meaning, numerousdifferent glassmaking techniques and a variety of traditional andmodern image making processes. This palimpsest of techniquesand traditional skills combine to create an artwork of colour andbeauty as well as an artwork of meaning and intent.

Bergemann's works express a critical analysis of the realityduring the times of the GDR. Her precise observations of hiddencontexts is shown in the peculiar details of her photographs.

Bergemann’s photographs play with the longing of the observerwho appears to be drawn into a thoughtful and melancholic moodfilled with eerie, dreamlike states-of-being, while looking at herphotographs. The complexity found in these photographs createsthe unmistakable, personal style of the Berlin-based photographer.

Meet Andy Warhol, the face of Pop Art, at thelatest traveling exhibition to open at ArtScienceMuseum. Andy Warhol: 15 Minute Eternal willopen on 17 March with over 260 paintings,drawings, sculptures, film, and video of thelegendary artist’s works, marking the first time suchan extensive collection is exhibited in Singapore.

Andy Warhol was a leading figure in the visual art movementknown as Pop Art. He was renowned for using mass production ofpopular culture such as advertising, comic books, and brandproducts, as the basis of his art. Andy Warhol: 15 Minutes Eternalwill feature his masterpieces including Jackie (1964), MarilynMonroe (1967), Campbell’s Soup Can (1961), Silver Liz (1963),Time Capsule 51 (1970’s), The Last Supper (1986), andnumerous iconic Self-Portraits. The exhibition will also beaccompanied by a wide range of associated documents, interactivetimelines, photographs, and archival material.

The exhibition will contain sections dedicated to differentphases of the artist's career in a chronological manner. In the “EarlyYears” section, visitors will see artworks from Warhol's childhoodand early works as a successful commercial artist in the 1940s.

“The Factory Years” section will feature Warhol's transitionfrom a commercial artist to a business artist during the 1960s. Itwas also during this period that he created the iconic masterpiecesof the Campbell's Soup can and silk screen portraits of celebritiessuch as Liz Taylor and Marilyn Monroe.

During the 1960s, Warhol's art studio became the meetingplace for artists and musicians. The art studio, known as the SilverFactory, was entirely covered with foil and silver paint. It was alsohere that Warhol began the mass production of artworks.

Paying homage to Warhol's art studio, the exhibition willdedicate space to a recreation of The Silver Factory. To provide aninteresting interactive experience, the space will feature costumesfor visitors to dress up and be “a star for 15 minutes”, a photobooth to capture the experience, a reproduction of the couch from

the Silver Factory from which visitors can enjoy his avant gardefilms, and the whimsical Silver Clouds (1966) piece made offloating helium balloons.

Warhol’s celebrated use of Polaroids in photographingcelebrities during the 1970s will be explored in the “Exposures”section. During this time, Andy Warhol focused on commissionedportraits to fund his interest in experimental film. This shift in focusis evident in the genre of art works on display such asadvertisements and silverprint photographs, which reflect Warhol’sfascination with fame and glamour. It is also during this time thathe started creating time capsules which contained meaningful itemscollected from the various periods of his life. Out of the over 600time capsules Warhol created throughout his lifetime, visitors willbe able to view one that contains over 50 magazines and books.

During the 1980s, having reached the pinnacle of success inthe art world, Warhol ventured into television media with AndyWarhol’s T.V. and Andy Warhol’s Fifteen Minutes which visitorswill be able to watch in “The Last Supper” section. The diversityof his last decade of creation includes works such as theEndangered Species series, Rorschach series and OxidationPaintings. The exhibition concludes with The Last Supper and SelfPortrait, two iconic masterpieces he created at the very end of hislife that are monumental in both scale and the impact they had inthe art industry.

Born in Ninghai, Zhejiang Province, China in1972, Ye Jian Qing obtained his Master and PhDdegree from the China Central Academy of FineArts (CAFA) in Beijing. Currently a full time artist,he also holds a teaching position in the FrescoDepartment at his alma mater.

Acclaimed by art critics and collectors alike, Ye’s work hasbeen exhibited in reputable art institutions worldwide such as theCentral Art College in Madrid and the Art Gallery of China inBeijing. His opuses have also been featured at international artfairs, including Art Taipei and the Korea International Art Fair in2007, and Bridge New York in 2008. In 2010, Ye became theyoungest artist to have held a solo exhibition at the prestigiousNational Art Museum of China (NAMOC).

Ye’s artworks are shaped by reflections on the relationshipbetween painting and photography, as evident in his popularlyknown Hutong and Cityscape Series. Grounded in his profoundknowledge in Chinese traditional culture, the artist infused theChinese aesthetic ethos into western photographic imageries oftoday. Effortlessly blended the Chinese ink-and-wash techniqueinto his oil paintings, the result is a renewed poetic expression thatspeaks to the contemporary generation.

After the launch of the new series Exploring the Bodhisattva in2010 in NAMOC, Ye was invited to Singapore as Resident Artist in2011. From there he began conceptualization on a new phase ofartistic creations, and reinterpreted his previous renowned series ina fresh light. Witnessed in the new works of Ye’s Cityscape series isa drastic change in their emanated aura; shifting from a bright colorpalette to the cold monochromatic greyish tone, the paintings invokea quiet yet ambivalent sentiment as if one is viewing an old blackand white photograph, and the monochromatic color vividlyexpresses, both pictorially and metaphorically, the coldness of a city.

view, what presented to viewers is the obscure silhouettes of giantskyscrapers and busy traffic, hinting at an unpredictable path of thefleeting urban development.

Though expressed in Western medium, Ye’s works arenonetheless aesthetically and culturally Chinese. Bearing thecultural symbols and values inherited from one’s historical root,water is one of the poetic symbols recurrently appeared in hiscreations. In traditional Chinese culture, water is spiritual,symbolic of empowerment, purification and fluidity. In Ye’sCityscape paintings, the bold and fluid brushstrokes vivify the rainscene and materialize the ever-shifting nature of a citydevelopment, it also relays the artist’s desire to purge the tiresomemechanical city that he now calls home. The artist at the sametime transformed water into tranquil lakes in a series of newpaintings, allowed their charming reflections to purify one’s heart,and to open up a psychological space for contemplation.

Anchored firmly to the Chinese traditional culture and his uniqueaesthetic, Ye’s artistic endeavor not only attracted the eyes andmoved the hearts, but it also offered viewers of diverse cultures analternative outlook to the Chinese contemporary art world, as well asto the newly interpreted Chinese culture that is relevant of our time.

Artists living and working in Wessex Estate willopen their doors for the annual ArtWalk@Wessex.

Set against the beautiful backdrop of Portsdown Road are thehistorical black and white houses and walk-up apartments that containthe homes and studios of local and international artists.

This year there will be the opportunity to visit 14 studios and meet20 artists working in a variety of media including painting, drawing,printmaking and ceramics. The public will be able to meet the artists,find out what inspires them, the techniques they use and understandthe creative process. This is also an opportunity to buy artwork directlyfrom the artists.

ArtWalk@Wessex is free and self guided. Maps will be available atall studios. Advised start of the Art Walk at Block 28, Woking Road,#03-05 or Block 2, Whitchurch Road, #02-03.

The Singapore Dance Theatre opens Season2012 with one of the greatest classical ballets ofall time, Swan Lake.

This production premiered in December 2007 and was warmlyreceived by both critics and audiences. Through evocative musicand skilful dance, Swan Lake tells the tale of Odette, the tragicPrincess captured by the evil sorcerer, Von Rothbart, and turnedinto a swan. Under the curse, she can only reveal her true humanform at night and only the promise of true love from a man who ispure of heart and deed can rescue her and render the spellpowerless. One night, Prince Siegfried finds the Princess andenamoured by her beauty, he professes his undying love to her.However, the Prince is deceived by the sorcerer and, in a crueltwist of fate, gives the sorcerer’s daughter, Odile, his promise ofdevotion instead, unwittingly breaking his vow of love to Odette.Now, only Siegfried’s defeat of the sorcerer can free them both andreunite them in their love.

The first Swan Lake was choreographed by Julius Reisingerand premiered in 1877 at the Bolshoi Theatre and wasTchaikovsky’s first ballet music attempt. It was in 1895 thatMarius Petipa and Lev Ivanov created their masterpiece that wouldlater have them deemed synonymous with Swan Lake by balletenthusiasts. Since then, many versions and interpretations of SwanLake have been produced, including a thirty-five minute piecechoreographed by George Balanchine in 1951, set as the firsttraditional ballet of the New York City Ballet repertoire.

With spectacular staging, resplendent raiment, and breath-taking ballet movement, audiences can expect to be treated to astunning masterwork of one of the world’s most beloved ballet,with Singapore Dance Theatre’s production of Swan Lake.

The Singapore Dance Theatre has performed Swan Lakebefore, once in December 2007 and later, in December 2009.The 2012 version is expected to build on the previous versions asthe company has developed in terms of repertoire, number ofperformances as well as experience and capability of the dancers.

Being a devout Buddhist who grew up in a smallBurmese village has undoubtedly played a largeinfluence in Aung Kyaw Htet's artistic practice, asseen through his exquisite balance of realism andsensitivity of subject, using varying shades of greyand a considered use of colour in his soloexhibition Illuminations.

The young enigmatic monks and nuns are portrayed with adelicate dignity that speaks directly to the artist's dedication to theBuddhist faith – an important foundation to his Burmese culture, inthe face of disparaging conditions and poverty that prevails in Burma.

For more than a decade Aung has quietly produced some of themost coherent, nuanced, and resonant bodies of artworks fromBurma. While his depictions of novice monks and nuns mayunleash questions about the slippery social environment of Burmaand the role of romanticism under such conditions, he insteadmobilises a reserved and ordered look into the inquiry of socialisolation and spiritual identity with a contemporary emotionalmannerism that represents these subjects as irredeemably human.
