islands• The area is 710 km2 (a little bit more than Jakarta,

661.5 km2)• Population 5.18 million people (half of Jakarta

population)• Singapore was previously part of Malaysia before

separated on 9 August 1965• Currency: SGD (Singapore Dollar)• Language: English, Malay, Chinese, Tamil• Religion: Buddhism, Christian, Islam, Taoism,

Hinduism

Singapore is very small for a country. No forest, no oils, no mines. Unlike Indonesia who has everything. But, Singaporeans have more diverse in economy and achieve more success than Indonesia.

becomes a very important port and act as busiest business hub in Asia Pacific region

• Singapore is a world leader in several economic areas: o The country is the world's fourth leading financial centero The world's second-biggest casino gambling marketo One of the world's top three oil refining centers o The world's largest oil-rig producer, and a major ship-repairero The port is one of the five busiest ports in the worldo The easiest place in the world to do business (given by the World Bank)o The world's top logistics hubo The world's fourth largest foreign-exchange trading centre after

London, New York and Tokyo.

• Singapore relies on export and import• Singapore port is currently the world busiest port in the world, competing with Hong Kong & Shanghai, China• The port is a necessity because Singapore lacks on land and natural resources• The port is considered as Mega-structure by National Geographic• More than 10,000 people work in Singapore port today

Education in Singapore

• English is the language of instruction in all public schools and all subjects are taught and examined in English

• Education takes place in three stages:o Primary education (compulsory – 6 years) o Secondary education (4 – 5 years)o Pre-university education / junior college(2 – 3 years)

• There are four standard subjects taught to all students: o English o The mother tongueo Mathematics o Science

• Singaporeans students are consistently the top five students in the world

• Singapore government offers many scholarships for bright students in South East Asia region & also China mainland

Do You Know?• You can easily go to Singapore from Batam by Ferry, 50 minutes

ride that costs USD 43 per person• Singapore is one of Four Asian Tigers, along with Hong Kong,

Taiwan, and South Korea• Singaporean considered as very rich. It has the biggest

percentage of millionaires in the world. 1 out of six people in Singapore has 1 million dollar or more

• Although English is the official working language and the most widely used language in Singapore, the national anthem ‘Majulah Singapura‘ is actually sung in Malay.

• Sing-lish, a Singaporean patois mixing English with the odd phrase of Chinese, Malay and even Tamil, has two entries – lah and sinseh

• Every Singaporean boy has to go for Military draft when they reach 18 years of age and re-service before reach 40 years of age

• 37% of Singaporeans are not Singaporeans! They are foreign workers or permanent resident from other countries
