SACHSE HIGH SCHOOL CHORAL MUSIC

Since opening its doors in the fall of 2002, the Sachse High School Choir program has been achieving the highest standard of musical excellence. Students involved in choral music have the opportunity to participate in a variety of ensembles, including Treble Choir, Men’s Chorus, Women’s Chorale, Non-Varsity Mixed Choir, A Cappella Choir, Madrigal Singers, and Mane Attraction. Through participation in any of these ensembles, students are afforded the opportunity to achieve the following goals of the program:

• Attain a healthy sound through the exploration of vocal technique and good body position • Develop strong musicianship through the performance of “quality” choral literature, such as: • singing with line • singing with proper diction and articulation • singing with expression • singing as an ensemble • Sing in a variety of styles, languages, and ensembles • Learn through teamwork a sense of responsibility and commitment through a

variety of performance opportunities • Achieve a better appreciation, understanding, and respect for choral and vocal literature

through performance and experience Students are presented with the opportunity to build individual musicianship skills through small ensembles and solo performance opportunities throughout the school year.

THE CHORAL MUSIC STAFF

Joshua McGuire is the Head Choir Director at Sachse High School. He holds a Masters Degree in Choral Conducting from Louisiana State University and a Bachelors Degree in Music Education from Western Illinois University. Originally from Illinois, Mr. McGuire taught at the middle school and high school levels in the Chicago area. Mr. McGuire is a member of ACDA, TCDA, TMEA, TMAA, and Pi Kappa Lambda. Professionally, he has performed with the Highland Park Chorale for eight seasons and the Chicago Choral Artists for three seasons. Mr. McGuire serves the Texas Music Educator’s Association as the Area C Vocal Division Chair.

Kristin Poligala is beginning her third year as the Assistant Choir Director at Sachse High School. She completed her degree in Music Education at Texas Women’s University where she studied under Dr. Vicki Baker and Dr. Joni Jensen. Mrs. Poligala has previously directed choirs in Celina ISD and Mesquite ISD. Her choirs have consistently achieved Superior ratings at UIL and other contests. Mrs. Poligala is an active member of TMEA, TCDA, and TMAA. She has sung professionally with The Texas Voices in Dallas. She lives in Rowlett with her husband, Chris, and daughter, Madison.

Lavanda Davis, mezzo-soprano, has been teaching vocal technique and directing choral ensembles with students of all ages for over nineteen years. Ms. Davis holds a Master of Music from Portland State University. New to the Dallas area, she has been teaching in international schools in Cairo and the United Arab Emirates for the past nine years. While teaching overseas, Ms. Davis’ students have attended music festivals in London, Belgium, Norway, Scotland, Switzerland, Jordan, Qattar, Oman, United Arab Emirates and Egypt. While teaching both abroad and in the United States, Ms. Davis’ students have participated in a variety of activities, including: All-Northwest, All-State and Association for Music in International Schools Honor Choirs, school ensembles (i.e. pop groups, chamber ensembles, school talent shows, school musicals, etc.), community theatre productions, and competitions. Her students have received superior ratings at Regional and State Solo and Ensemble contest and have received half to full tuition scholarships to music schools across the United States.

Patricia Vigil, coloratura soprano, is a native of Colorado now residing in Denton. From Verdi’s innocent yet strong-willed Gilda, to Mozart’s ferocious Queen of the Night, to Strauss’s zany and resourceful Adele, Dr. Vigil displays versatility, dramatic skill, and effortless coloratura. She recently completed the DMA in Vocal Performance at Temple University. Dr. Vigil is a recipient of the prestigious Richard F. Gold Career Grant from the Shoshana Foundation, as well as a winner of the Diamond Award at the Vera Scammon International Voice Competition. She has performed throughout the United States with such companies as Opera Company of Philadelphia, Intermountain Opera, The New Sigmund Romberg Orchestra, Asheville Lyric Opera, Concert Opera of New Jersey, Ridge Light Opera, Atlantic Coast Opera Festival, Lancaster Opera Company, Utah Festival Opera, Opera Delaware, Baton Rouge Opera, Opera Iowa, Des Moines Metro Opera, Sarasota Opera, Opera Southwest, Cleveland Opera on Tour, and Opera Theatre of Philadelphia.

CHORAL ENSEMBLES AT SACHSE HIGH SCHOOL

There is a choral ensemble for every student at SHS regardless of their experience or age. Directors will assess student ability and ensemble balance throughout the year. Students may be re-auditioned before the Winter break for class changes beginning in the Spring semester.

Treble Choir – Non-auditioned group for all women, grades 9-12. These choirs perform at all choir concerts throughout the year, and may participate in UIL adjudicated activities. Emphasis is placed on the basics of music theory and literacy, with a special emphasis on the basic knowledge of solfege and sight reading. Men’s Choir – Non-auditioned group for all men, grades 9-12. These choirs perform at all choir concerts throughout the year, and may participate in UIL adjudicated activities. Emphasis is placed on the basics of music theory and literacy, with a special emphasis on the basic knowledge of solfege and sight reading. Women’s Chorale – This choir is the advanced training women’s choir at Sachse High School, composed of approximately 50 women. Membership is open to students in grades 9-12. Focus is placed on vocal development, advanced sight reading skills, and ensemble preparation at a high level.

Mixed Choir – Auditioned choir for all men, grades 9-12, and for women, grades 10-12. Exceptions may be made by the choir directors. Membership is limited to approximately 50 students in each group. Students that participate in this group may meet separately by gender throughout the year. The Non-Varsity Men and the Non-Varsity Treble Choir may also each prepare for UIL Choir Concert and Sight Reading Contest, as well as all public concerts. This choir may rehearse after school (primarily on Mondays) throughout the year. Continued emphasis on music literacy (in a variety of styles, languages, and voicing such as 3 and 4-parts), sight-reading skills, and offering opportunities for a wide range of music performances. This choir may combine with other Non-Varsity choirs for other choral performances throughout the school year.

Varsity Mixed Choir – Also known as the SHS A Cappella Choir, this is the varsity choral ensemble at Sachse High School. Membership is open to all students in grades 10-12 through an audition in the Spring of the previous year, or through approval of the Director of Choirs. Membership is limited to approximately 60-70 students. The choir rehearses on Tuesday afternoons throughout the school year in separate gender choirs, the A Cappella Choir Men and the A Cappella Choir Women. Music study includes exploration and performance of four part music and advanced repertoire in all styles and time periods, along with a continued emphasis on sight-reading, solfege, and rhythm skills. This ensemble participates in all UIL music contests and tours each spring. Mane Attraction – This ensemble is a mixed vocal jazz/pop ensemble. Membership is limited and by audition in the previous Spring. Students in this ensemble display the highest levels of musicianship in sight-reading, improvisation, and showmanship. Rehearsals are held after school throughout the school year. All vocalists are also members of the Madrigal Singers. Madrigal Singers – Madrigal Singers is the chamber choir at Sachse High School. It is open to all choir students, grades 10-12, through audition in the previous Spring. The choir performs in the annual Madrigal Dinner, as well as performs for area civic and school groups throughout the year. Literature performed encompasses a wide range of vocal styles and periods, and is mostly sung a cappella. They annually participate in the GISD Chamber Choir Festival and UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest, and produce an annual Madrigal Dinner. The Madrigal Singers have received Superior ratings at the American Classics Madrigal and Chamber Choir Festival in San Antonio (2007, 2012, 2014, & 2017), were selected to receive a “Performance of Distinction” at the American Classics Madrigal and Chamber Choir Festival (2012 & 2014), and have been selected as the overall winner at the Texas Renaissance Festival’s Early Music Competition (2008).

OTHER PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES

The following opportunities are offered to all SHS choral students:

Private Voice Lessons – The GISD Music Enrichment Program gives each student the opportunity to take voice lessons at school for a reasonable fee of $18.00 per 25-minute lesson. The lessons are scheduled either during class, over the lunch period, or after school. Times are limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. All choral students are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity. In each lesson, students will practice sight-reading, prepare for All-Region auditions, Solo & Ensemble Contest, choral auditions, and Voice Recitals. Sachse High School is fortunate to have Mrs. Davis and Dr. Vigil on the staff. Other voice teachers in the area can be recommended. Many teach at home in Rowlett, Sachse, and Garland. Contact your choir director for more information. UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest – All students participating in private voice lessons are strongly encouraged to participate in this event. Students will prepare and memorize a solo provided on the UIL Prescribed Music List to be performed for a judge. The judge will give the student a rating of I – V, with I being the highest score. All participating students will pay their own entry and accompanist fee ($38) prior to the winter break in December. All-Region Choir/All-State Choir – Auditions are held each Fall for the TMEA Region III Choir. Participating students must prepare the required music selections for a series of blind auditions before a panel of 5 judges. From these auditions, students with the best ranks continue on to participate in the Region III Choir and may have the opportunity to audition for the Texas All-State Choir. All-Region Honor Choir – Auditions are held each October for the TMEA Region III 9-10 Honor Choir. Participating students must prepare the required music selections for a blind audition before a panel of 3 judges. This will be different choral music from the All-Region Choir audition.

ATTENDANCE

Extra rehearsals and concerts are an extension of the classroom, and students will be graded accordingly. These required choir activities are the “assessment” of the choral program and the circumstances of the “test” cannot be duplicated at another date or time. The dates for all concerts are presented to each student/family at the beginning of the year. If a student chooses not to participate in a required choir activity, even if that activity occurs before or after school or on the weekend, they will receive a grade of “0” which will dramatically affect a student’s grade for the grading period. All choir activities are a team effort; therefore, attendance is required, regardless of whether or not the student thinks attendance is needed. Unexcused absences are determined by the choir directors, and may include:

• Lack of a ride (ask a friend IN ADVANCE or inform your choir director, who can help you make arrangements!) • Non-school related activities (club sports, dance or music recitals, parties, birthdays, etc.) • Job • Trip or family planned activity • Other circumstances as determined by the choir directors

Failure to participate in required choir activities will negatively affect a student’s grade, possibly causing the student to fail choir and will also affect a student’s future placement and participation in ensembles at Sachse High School. Thursday School will be assigned the following week as a means for a student to make-up the grade.

STUDENTS WITH JOBS

If a student has a job, please keep the following in mind: • Having to work is NOT considered an excused absence from any required, graded activity. Missing a required,

graded choir activity for work will result in a “0”. • Student are expected to notify employers well in advance of all required choir activities. Students may print a copy of

the 2017-2018 SHS Choir Calendar or may request a letter from their choir director to give to their employer regarding choir activities that may interfere with work.

COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS

Every effort is made to keep families up-to-date in every aspect of the choral program. Several means of communication will be used throughout the year.

Simply log-on to www.charmsoffice.com, type in sachsehschoirs in the Parent/Student Login box followed by the student’s assigned GISD ID on the following page.

You may use this site to get to the CHARMS website, as well as purchasing tickets to SHS Choir events (see more information on page 11).

GRADES TECHNICAL PROFICIENCY AND IMPROVEMENT – 40% Rehearsal & 10% Class Work • Ensemble Performing/Rehearsal (participation and music skills). Graded regularly during the rehearsal. • Technical Proficiency. Selected sections of a music assignment or sight-reading. This will be graded during the choral rehearsal. WRITTEN WORK – 5% Homework & 10% Quizzes • Homework Assignments. • Quizzes. Based on work done within the class. Includes recorded sight-reading quizzes. CRITICAL LISTENING – 20% Test • Performance Critique. Following each concert/performance, students will complete an evaluation based on their performance as well as the performance of their ensemble. This will be graded on content, use of appropriate musical terminology, and observable analytical skills. PERFORMANCE – 20% Test • Required performance in at least one concert or music presentation each 6-8 weeks. A student may receive up to three test grades per concert (Performance, listening/concert etiquette, and attendance). TERM FINAL To be announced each term. The final exam may be written (simple theory, music history, fundamentals of singing, etc.) or performance based (sight reading, excerpt from a prepared selection).

REMEDIATION Remediation is only offered for concert absences discussed with the director prior to the absence, or in the extreme case of sudden illness or family emergency. The director will assign a project to “make-up” the concert grade. This will include, but is not limited to watching a recording of the entire concert and writing a critique, singing through your choir repertoire to show individual knowledge and skill, and other projects as assigned. This make-up assignment will require at least as much time as the warm-up and concert (approximately 1 ½ hours). This will replace the individual performance grade. As stated before, Thursday School may be assigned. Grades are updated frequently and are available on-line by logging in to Skyward, the GISD gradebook.

ELIGIBILITY

All choral ensembles adhere to the eligibility rules and regulations as stated by TEA and GISD. To be eligible to participate for a six weeks period following the initial six weeks of the school year, a student must not have a recorded average lower than 70 on a scale of 0 to 100 in any course for that proceeding six weeks period. Any student whose recorded grade average in any course is lower than 70 at the end of a six weeks period shall be suspended from participation during the succeeding six weeks period. However, a student may regain eligibility seven calendar days after the succeeding three-week evaluation period if the student is passing all courses on the last day of the three-school-week period (this includes a grade of at least a 70 on a scale of 0 to 100). GISD provides a list of courses that are exempt from eligibility requirements. Students who are ineligible will continue to rehearse during their choir class, after school if necessary, and participate in curricular performances to earn their grade. Ineligible students may not travel with the choir or participate in extracurricular performances (this includes the Spring Choir Trip, UIL contests, Choir Dinner Show, public performances in which admission is charged, Madrigal Singers, and Mane Attraction performances, and any other competitions or auditions).

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

Your choral ensemble’s performance is directly related to your rehearsal. Participation is a factor in determining the quality of the finished product. Students must always work to focus with mind and body. The following are expectations designed to assist us all as we strive for excellence.

• BE ON TIME AND BE PREPARED! All students are expected to be in the choir room, prepared for class on the risers with binder and pencil, prior to the bell. Trips to the restroom, water fountain, and lockers are to be taken care of prior to the beginning of rehearsal.

• Cell phone use is at the discretion of the directors in the choir room during rehearsals, per the GISD Cell Phone Policy.

• ABSOLUTELY NO FOOD, GUM, OR DRINKS ARE ALLOWED IN THE CHOIR ROOM. Failure to observe this

expectation will result in choir service to the student – Water bottles with a lid or cap are the only exceptions.

• All students are expected to demonstrate behavior that is appropriate to the rehearsal process.

• THE CHOIR DIRECTOR’S OFFICE IS OFF LIMITS TO STUDENTS. This also goes for all storage rooms and the choral library.

• Music is to be treated with great care. Damaged or lost music will be charged to the student. Grades will be held until the fee is paid in full to your choral director.

• The piano in the choir room, as well as choir room stereo and all computers, are not for student use. PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

Choral students will also be graded on their performance behavior. The following expectations are required for all performances:

• Be seated or standing in place for the concert at the stated time. • Wear the correct uniform that is required for the performance. • Promptly check-out and return uniforms/uniform parts within the required time periods. • Watch the director at all times. • DO NOT TALK ON STAGE. • DO NOT DRAW ATTENTION TO YOURSELF. • No gum or cell phones. • Move between the stage and seating areas in quiet, single file lines based on riser position and row. MOVE WITH

PURPOSE. • Always act in a professional manner. If you must question something you are about to do, then do not do it.

DIRECTOR EXPECTATIONS

The Choir Directors at Sachse High School will commit to the following:

• Announce calendar dates for choir activities at least one month in advance.

Did You Know?We go through three boxes of facial tissue every two weeks in the choir room! Please help us build

up our stock by bringing a box to share by the September 14, 2017 fees/forms due date. Participants will have the opportunity to enter a drawing … one chance per box!

• Provide an environment that allows students to enhance music skills in sight reading, performance, and appreciation of choral music through scholarly study.

• Make arrangements and plan stimulating rehearsal and performance experiences. • Arrange fundraising opportunities to assist students with choir financial obligations.

• Make every effort to build qualities of self-discipline, appreciation, confidence, and responsibility in each student.

• Approach every class period and rehearsal with a positive and nurturing attitude.

UNIFORMS

All students are responsible for the proper care of their own uniforms.

WOMEN A black dress and uniform bag ($5.00 replacement fee) will be provided by the SHS Choral Program. The total cost of this dress is $70.00. This amount will be charged to the student at the end of the year if the dress has been destroyed or lost. Do not make any permanent alterations to your dress. Students will be charged for any permanent alterations. Female students are responsible for the following:

• Black character shoes (these are available through the Choir Booster Club for $33.00), or a shoe of similar style with a 1 ½ - 2 inch heel. Dresses are fitted and hemmed with this shoe height.

• Slip

MEN A black tuxedo ($28.00 for the pants and $61.00 for the coat), bow tie and cummerbund ($10.00 together), and uniform bag ($5.00 replacement fee) will be provided by the SHS Choral Program. This amount will be charged to the student at the end of the year if the tuxedo has been destroyed or lost. Do not make any permanent alterations to your tuxedo. Students will be charged for any permanent alterations. Male students are responsible for the following:

• Black dress shoes (No athletic shoes or boots will be accepted) • Black socks • Standard white tuxedo shirt (Available through the Choir Booster Club for $15.00) • Clean shaven and no ear rings.

UNIFORM CARE Do not make any permanent alterations to your uniform. The following are suggestions to care for dresses and tuxedos. DRY CLEANING YOUR UNIFORM • One dry cleaning is included with each student’s choir fees.

• All dry cleaning will be through the approved cleaners contracted by the Choir Booster Club. Location and pricing information are available by contacting Mrs. Poligala.

DRESSES • DO NOT WASH YOUR DRESS IN THE WASHING MACHINE! Your dress is to be dry cleaned only. • Always hang your dress when you are not wearing it.

• Only wear the shoes that you wore during your dress fitting (otherwise your dress may not look right on stage). • DO NOT MAKE ANY ALTERATIONS! All alterations will be made through the uniform committee chair. As with extra dry cleanings, please bring your dress in to the choir room and alterations will be made. • Pearls will be worn by the women in the A Cappella Choir and Mixed Choir Women at each concert. Lost pearls will be replaced with a payment of $5.00 per set. TUXEDOS • All tuxedos are expected to be hung properly at home when the student is not wearing it, i.e. • DO NOT WASH YOUR TUXEDO JACKET OR PANTS IN THE WASHING MACHINE! Your tuxedo is to be dry cleaned only. • DO NOT MAKE ANY ALTERATIONS! All alterations will be made through our uniform committee chair. As with extra dry cleanings, please bring your pants in to the choir room and alterations will be made. • Extra uniform parts (tie and cummerbund) will be distributed before each performance, and will be picked-up by section leaders immediately following the performance. No tie or cummerbunds should leave the school.

COLOGNE AND PERFUME All students should be “scent neutral.” That means that no cologne or perfume will be allowed during any performance. However, deodorant should be worn for all rehearsals and concerts.

CHOIR T-SHIRT T-shirts will be worn to school on days of choral concerts, contests, specified spirit days, or any performance during the school day. Choir t-shirts are automatically purchased on the behalf of each student, and are part of the choir fee payment.

ADDITIONAL DRESS CODE FOR SHS CHOIR MEMBERS The dress code for all students involved in any organization will be as follows when competing at any location, performing at any location, practicing away from the SHS campus, visiting off campus when they are in any way representing their club, organization, or athletic team, and any photography and/or film that shows the student to be part of an organization or team:

• Women will not be allowed to have any object in the nose for a piercing • No student will be allowed to have any sort of hair color, entire or partial, that is not a normal hair color • Men will be clean shaven, no exceptions, for any organization at any time • Men will not wear ear rings • The dress code for GISD will apply in all other areas. • There are not exceptions. Head coaches and directors are to manage the actions of all their assistant staff

members and students within their sport or program.

AWARD JACKETS

The GISD Fine Arts Department has implemented this program to allow a student involved in a choir the opportunity to accumulate points towards an award jacket. Once a student accumulates the needed 90 points, they will be given a date for the next available fitting and GISD will pay for the jacket. However, it is up to the student and their family to pay for all lettering, patches, and alterations to be made to the jacket. While every effort is made to stay up-to-date using CHARMS on each student’s points, it is ultimately up to the student to keep track of these points by using the “GISD Application for High School Choir Award Jacket.” This form is located on CHARMS or on the bulletin board in the choir room.

PARTICIPATION FEES

A participation fee will be assessed at the beginning of the school year ($80 for the A Cappella Choir and $50 for all other ensembles). This fee will cover the cost of the Spring uniform cleaning, all uniform alterations, a choir t-shirt, buses for miscellaneous trips, music binder for each student in the choral program, All Region Choir and All-State audition fees, 9/10 Honor Choir audition fee, ticket to the end of year choir banquet, as well as many other expenses that arise throughout the school year. This fee is due at the same time as the Student/Parent Acknowledgement Form by Thursday, September 14, 2017.

Uniform items (character shoes for women and tuxedo shirts for men) are not included in the standard choir fees collected at the beginning of the year. An order form for these items is included with the choir handbook.

Members of the Madrigal Singers are also required to pay a $100 fee ($150 for Mane Attraction) for the year (in addition to the A Cappella Choir participation fee of $80). This fee will cover many things throughout the year, including uniform parts or rentals, group shirts, photo studio sitting charges, and many, many, many other expenses that arise throughout the year.

FINANCIAL POLICY

No student will be denied participation in the SHS Choral Program. Please speak with Mr. McGuire or Mrs. Poligala so that arrangements can be made to keep all students active in the Sachse High School choral program, as well as eligible to participate in other SHS activities. Families have the option of post-dating checks in order to pay their choir fees in the fall. All fees must be paid by the date specified. See the “2017-2018 Participation Fees” payment sheet for more information.

INSUFFICIENT FUNDS

GISD and SHS Choir Booster Club policy state that checks from any individual who has had at least one declined check to these entities will not be eligible for payments in this form. Cash or money orders only will be accepted in this instance.

DELINQUENT ACCOUNTS

Student are responsible for turning in all money due to the SHS Choirs for fees, fundraising, choir trips, etc. by the required date. Many times there is a deadline imposed on the choral program for these funds. Students who are delinquent in their payments may receive the following consequences:

• Students and their families will receive monthly statement reminders

• Students may not be allowed to attend any choir trip until their account is settled

• Students will not be allowed to participate in any future fundraisers for the SHS Choral Program if a balance is due for a past fundraiser

• Students who do not return items that have been checked out to sell (i.e. Chili Cook Off tickets or Car Wash tickets) or money for those items will be referred to the Assistant Principal’s Office for theft.

• Serious offenders will be dealt with through the Assistant Principal’s Office.

• Student accounts that have not been taken care of by the end of the term may keep a student from receiving their class schedule, report card (as per SHS School Policy), or from participating in the Senior Commencement Ceremony. These students will be referred to the Assistant Principal’s Office and will be dealt with similar to book fines.

DEPOSITING MONEY

Every family has the option of paying cash, check, or money order for any expenses that are due to the Sachse High School Choral Program. All checks should be made payable to SHS Choirs. Each check should contain the following in the memo line: Student’s Full Name and Student’s ID Number

All payments should be placed in a sealed envelope with the student’s name, ID, and purpose (i.e. Choir fees, Trip payment, Fundraising money, etc.) on it, and then placed in the safe located inside the choir director’s office. These envelopes are available in the office next to the safe. Do not give the money to your director and do not place loose money in the safe without your name or the purpose on an envelope.

SACHSE HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR BOOSTER CLUB

It is the intent of this organization to provide support for the choirs at Sachse High School by serving in the following roles: • Provide chaperones for choral events throughout the year • Assist the choral directors in the organization and implementation of fundraisers • Provide food and supplies for SHS choir events • Raise and distribute scholarship money to assist students in further music study • Overall, to instill and maintain an enthusiastic interest in the various needs of the choirs at Sachse High School

Membership is open to any family or business at the following levels:

Sponsor – $15 (basic individual membership) Bronze – $25 (basic family membership) Silver – $35 (one complimentary ticket to the Mane Attraction Pop Show) Gold – $50 (two complimentary tickets to the Mane Attraction Pop Show) Platinum – $100 (four complimentary tickets to the annual Mane Attraction Pop Show) Corporate – $300+ (choice of concert sponsorship; four complimentary tickets to the Mane Attraction

PURCHASING/RESERVING TICKETS FOR CONCERTS

The SHS choir program and booster club will utilize the Ludus Online Ticketing System. Families will have the opportunity to log on, make their seat selection in the SHS Auditorium, Cafeteria, or Little Theatre, and pay using their debit or credit card (service fee will apply). Paper tickets may be printed at home, e-mailed to your cell phone, or picked up at the box office prior to the start time of the event. You asked for it … we will provide it! Three ways to access this online ticketing service:
