Read the book aloud to introduce children to the story. Next, play the CD. After, point out how different the book becomes when you add music. Ask the children what they felt. “Does it make you want to move your feet?” or “Do you want to shake and shimmy?” Be silly and they’ll be silly too! Play the song again, this time encouraging kids to hum or sing along! Now that everyone is familiar with the song, play the song again and ask the children to add movements for the animals on each page. Then ask them to make up movements for “boogie, woogie, oogie.” Don’t give too much instruction so that kids can be creative and come up with their own moves! Play and sing the other verses from the book and have the children act out the way the different characters move. You may want to assign the animals or point to different kids as you go. Finally, play the song again, adding all the elements together, encouraging the children to sing, dance and act out the movements for their favorite animals. If you are feeling really ambitious, gather parents and friends to watch a performance of The Animal Boogie that you just completed.
