colorado legislature Strengthens Hate Crime Laws

The Anti-Defamation League was actively engaged during the 2017 Colorado legislative session, resulting in several key victories. In

particular, ADL supported two bills that strengthened Colorado’s hate crimes protections. ADL testified in favor of House Bill 1138, which requires hate crimes statistics to be reported annually to the Colorado general Assembly. ADL also supported and testified in favor of House Bill 1188. The bill added sexual orientation and disability as protected classes under the bias-motivated harassment statute which already included race, color, religion, ancestry and national origin. In addition, ADL worked on more than a dozen other proposed pieces of legislation, including its opposition to two religious exemptions bills that would have allowed businesses and individuals to claim that their religion gives them permission to exempt themselves from Colorado’s critical non-discrimination laws. l

ADL Mountain States Board member John Chanin testified before a legislative committee on behalf of ADL.

Throughout this edition of Dateline, you will read about an increase in acts

of anti-Semitism and other forms of hate. We hope you also note the many ways that the Anti-Defamation League counters such

hate by working in schools, at the legislature, on media and with law enforcement. Today, it feels as if people are under attack because of who they are and where they are from. This country and ADL have seen it before. This is not the first time people have been vilified based upon their religion or country of origin. Jews, Muslims and people of color have faced bias and prejudice here for centuries. Similarly, it is an unfortunate part of American history that ugly rhetoric and actions have been inflicted upon wave after wave of immigrants and refugees that have come to this country in search of safety and opportunity. prior to World War II, titans of business and celebrities modeled intolerance. people like Charles Lindbergh promoted “America First,” Henry Ford sponsored the publication of the vile Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion and Father Coughlin spewed anti-Semitic venom on his weekly radio broadcasts. This hateful rhetoric faded following World War II, but it never went away completely. We have seen a constant undercurrent of hate that periodically moves out from the shadows to offend us all. Through it all, ADL has worked tirelessly to demand not only respect for the Jewish people, but also to instill respect for others. We look forward to your joining with us in pursuit of our efforts to counter hate. l

anti-semitic incidents Surge in Colorado in 2016, Continue to Spike in 2017

The number of anti-Semitic incidents reported in Colorado more than doubled in 2016 from

the previous year, according to new data released in April by the Anti-Defamation League. ADL’s annual Audit of Anti-Semitic Incidents recorded 45 incidents in Colorado and none in Wyoming in 2016 compared to 18 incidents in Colorado and one in Wyoming in 2015. There has been a marked increase in the harassment of Jewish individuals and vandalism of Jewish institutions in the last six months with 15 anti-Semitic incidents already recorded in the first quarter of 2017. Calling the increase in incidents “quite concerning,” ADL Mountain States regional Director Scott L. Levin further noted, “It is par-ticularly alarming that the number of incidents has more than doubled in Colorado in just one year’s time. We are doing everything we can to shed light on the increased targeting of Jews in our state, as well as Jewish schools, community centers and synagogues. Increased awareness and vigilance are the watchwords of this time.” l

The Anti-Defamation League Mountain States Region was pleased to honor beloved singer-songwriter and social activist Peter Yarrow for his

recent composition that aptly warns us all that “The Children Are Listening.” Following the acceptance of his award—a specially commissioned ADL guitar strap—Yarrow played several iconic songs and visited with ADL supporters. l

adl’s 2017 essay Winners Link the Past with Their Present

ADL was proud to recognize the six student winners of ADL’s A Tribute to Moral Courage

Student Essay Contest, along with their families and teachers, at the 36th Annual governor’s Holocaust remembrance program on April 25, 2017. Out of over 100 essays submitted, six entries by students from Lovell, WY, and Denver and Lafayette, CO rose to the top. Using the Holocaust as a backdrop, each writer chose an individual from history or current times whom they believe demonstrated moral courage, and then shared how that person’s actions have influenced them today. The winning essays included stories of the past, such as Irena Sendler and Sojourner Truth, and also of current exemplars of moral courage, such as Malala Yousafzai and the Syrian Civil Defense, otherwise known as the White Helmets. read the essays at denver.adl.org. Students received their awards from ADL regional Director Scott L. Levin, ADL Board Member Linda Schatz and Deputy Denver Mayor Happy Haynes. For a second year, this student essay contest was generously underwritten by an anonymous donor. l

nearly 1700 guests joined

ADL for its 36th Annual governor’s Holocaust remembrance program, one of the largest such events in the United States, on April 25 at Temple Emanuel in Denver. This year’s program featured keynote speaker Dr. Hana Berger Moran, an infant survivor of the Holocaust. Born in a slave labor camp weighing less than three pounds to a mother who weighed 70 pounds in her ninth month of pregnancy, Hana and her mother miraculously survived the death march to Mauthausen concentra-tion camp where they were liberated by American soldiers. The program also featured a message to Colorado delivered by Lieutenant governor Donna Lynne, remarks by ADL regional Director Scott L. Levin, a memorial service and recognition of the winners of ADL’s “A Tribute to Moral Courage” student essay contest. ADL is grateful to Mountain States regional Board Members Justin Borus, Daniel Feiner, Cheri rubin and Linda Schatz for chairing the program and to the program’s generous sponsors: The Feiner Family Foundation, Michael and Debbie Feiner, The Curtiss-Lusher Family and JEWISHcolorado. l

Words to action: Addressing Anti-Semitism and Bias on Campus

now entering its third year in the ADL’s Mountain States region, Words to Action/

Confronting Anti-Semitism reached over 300 students in 20 trainings for middle school, high school, college students and adults in Colorado during the 2016-2017 academic year. Utilizing generous grants from rose Community Foundation, norton Bain Family Foundation and the Kesher Foundation, ADL brought the program to synagogues, schools, JCCs and university campuses. The program helps students learn strategies and empowers them to address and seek out resources to combat various mani-festations of anti-Semitism and anti-Israel bias. In order to meet the growing demand for programs, ADL doubled the number of trainings this past school year and expanded its focus to include sessions for parents as well as younger students. Workshops for staff and older campers will be conducted at a number of area summer camps in the coming months. To learn more about Words to Action or to schedule a training for your school, camp, youth group, or other teen or college group, please contact Words to Action coordinator Sue parker gerson at [email protected] or 303-830-7177. l

Barry Curtiss-Lusher is ADL’s former national Chair. He was introduced

to ADL by his wife, gay, when she asked Barry to come to meetings with her. It did not take long before the two of them were hooked. “We loved ADL’s dual mission of fighting anti-Semitism and securing justice and fair treatment for all,” Barry says. “It offered us the dual opportunity to participate in the Jewish community and in the broader community, as well, with something that was meaningful to us.” Both gay and Barry strongly believe that, just as families have to plan for the future, so do organizations. At different times in their lives, the couple has given different types of gifts to ADL as their circumstances permitted, starting with their first big gift to ADL many years ago, a check for $100. Their first planned gift, to the Anti-Defamation League Foundation (ADLF), was a life insurance policy. gay and Barry were celebrating a significant wedding anniversary, and asked Gay’s parents and family to help them fund the one-time premium on a life insurance policy as an anniversary gift. As their lives have progressed, Barry and gay have arranged other planned gifts in addition to increasing their annual gift to ADL each year. They put a bequest to ADLF in their estate documents, and then later designated a portion of their retirement accounts to ADLF. More recently, gay and Barry established two charitable gift annuities with the ADLF and made Barry’s mother the beneficiary so she will receive annual payments for the rest of her life, and ADL will receive the remainder of the original gift in the future. “Everyone should consider what gift is right for them at their current point in life, just like we did,” Barry says, “then add to it, as circumstances permit. We need ADL for our children and our grandchildren, and our legacy commitment helps to provide after we are gone.” l

This winter, the Anti-Defamation League chose the winners of its 2016-2017 Imagine A World Without Hate® Student Art Contest.

The contest was open to students in grades K-12 attending 2016-2017 no place For Hate® schools across Colorado. This year, ADL received over 200 entries! The winners were recognized on April 6, 2017 at the no place for Hate Celebration Breakfast, and many of the winning entries will appear in the 2018 Positive Impact! Calendar. ADL is proud of all the students, along with their teachers and families, who participated in cultivating a love of art and a commitment to creating a world that is safe and inclusive for all. Congratulations to the 2016-2017 Student Art Contest Winners. All of the art may be viewed on our website at http://bit.ly/2pQFAdz. l
