Messenger Pastor Al’s Message
“So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” (Matthew 6:34) For Consecration Sunday, Pastor Dave de Freese was with us, and he did a great job. It was so nice to catch up with him, hear about how things are going and what he’s doing now. Currently, Pastor Dave serves as the Vice President of Church Relations at Mosaic; which is an amazing ministry that supports families and individuals with developmental disabilities. Pastor Dave shared with me that recently Mosaic had taken a group of college students out to Axtell where Mosaic began, and he caught up with this group on the last day of their trip to hear about their experiences. He said it was so hopeful to hear these young adults speaking so eloquently about what these handful of days had meant to them, and he share with me one particular comment that touched him. One of the college student said, “These last few days were so meaningful and life changing because we experienced what it means to just live in the moment. Immediately, I knew why Pastor Dave was so moved. I have felt what that college student was expressing. In those moments, when we just get caught up in relationship, caring for others, compassion, we also find our place in the bigger picture; not worrying about the past or future but just deeply connecting and caring for others. It’s here that we are free. It really is a gift to be able to just… live in the moment. We hear it in the verse above from Matthew’s gospel as he records Jesus guidance, and this message is throughout the bible. Another story that is inspiring to me comes as the Hebrew people are traveling in the wilderness, and God provides manna from heaven; not to store up, but just enough for the day. I believe it’s a beautiful image of how God provides day by day so that we can live in the moment. For one of the National Youth Gatherings in New Orleans, the theme was JESUS, JUSTICE, JAZZ. We were reminded that, even though it is good to think ahead and plan, so often we cannot anticipate the moments when we might be called to reach out in care and compassion. So often, the work of justice and mercy, like good jazz music, is a matter of improvisation. By definition, you cannot prepare to improvise, but I do think there are things that focus us to see the opportunities that are right in front of us daily. A few weeks ago for adult forum, we looked at a video clip of James Ryan’s commencement address at Harvard University, entitled, “Five Essential Questions for Life.” continued on page 8

Always Being Made New The recollection of the Protestant Reformation 500 years ago call to mind major transformations in hu-man history. Christ’s death and Lu-
ther’s nailing of the 95 Theses on the Castle Church door in Wittenburg radically transformed people’s understanding of their relationship to God and to each other. We experience our own transformations through-out our lives. Events or people totally alter how we think about ourselves, how we think about God, or understand our purpose in life. Sometimes we are transformed in a moment or sometimes it happens over time. Whether the process is short or long, we are made new. And this process happens again and again. To celebrate the larger changes of the church, we invite you to share a story of personal transfor-mation. Who or what helped you get a different per-spective of your loss/sadness/ill health/hard time? Who or what helped you get a different perspective on your calling in life? Who or what helped you ac-cept something you didn’t want to? Who or what gave you the strength to change something? Please send your story to Lisa Kramme via email [email protected], or give a copy to Lisa or Keith at Sinai. Thanks to Jim Melang for sharing the first story. A copy of Jim’s story is on the entryway table (gold half sheet).

cont’ from page 1 I really appreciated his insight, and it’s not because the questions were particularly innovative or new. Basically, I believe these five questions are simply a means to slow us down and to remember what is truly important in life, so that when the moments come, we can take our place.
May God continue to slow us down, center us, give us daily disciplines that help us to remember what is truly important in life, so that we will be able to live in the moment! God’s Blessings,
Above: Haley Bogenreif, Thomas Strunk & Alissa Brokenicky were confirmed on October 29th.
