Dear Friends, I write this to you at the same time I am preparing for the celebration of our patronal feast day – the Feast of St. Mark – on Sunday, April 26th. Drawing from Holy Men, Holy Women, we learn the following about our Patron Saint:

Tradition holds that Mark (sometimes called John Mark) was the young man who lost his clothes when Jesus was taken in the garden of Gethsemane (see Mark 14:51). It is also thought by many that the "upper room" where the Last Supper was held was in Mark's parents' home. Mark's mother, whose name was Mary, was a follower of Jesus and a friend of the disciples.

The apostle Peter seems to have taken young Mark under his wing…. Mark is generally regarded as the author of the second gospel, which bears his name. It is sometimes called the Gentile Gospel because it seems to be directed more toward a Gentile than a Jewish audience.

What stands out for me in this summary of Mark is the crucial role he played in the early life of the Church to take those stories of an earlier generation (Peter) and to share them with a new generation and audience. I believe this celebration can be for us a reminder to stay close to the mission of our ancient namesake, as well as to our founders from Crescent Hill – that is, to be led by the desire to share the Good News with the next generation. What a worthy topic for consideration and reflection – and action – as we spend the next year in preparation for our 125th Anniversary!

161st Commencement Exercises Held on Sunday,

May 17th, you are cordially invited to the graduation of Fr. John Stonesifer as he receives his Doctorate in Ministry (D.Min.) from Louisville Seminary. His special area of studies has been in Interim Ministry and his doctoral project is titled, “Shalom in Interim Ministry.” Graduation takes place at Second Presbyterian Church (3701 Old Brownsboro Rd) at 3:30pm and is immediately followed by a reception.

Interested in Becoming a Deacon? Or More About Your Faith? The Diocesan School for Ministry is now accepting applications for the fall. Typically this follows some study with the EFM program. If you would like to learn more about this intensive study, see the material at the information table and speak to Fr. Stonesifer.

The Church Office will be closed Monday, May 25 in observance of Memorial Day.

Baptisms Our next opportunity for baptism will be Sunday, May 24. If you are interested in a baptism, please contact the parish office.

Looking Ahead… The Rt. Rev. Terry Allen White’s annual visit will be Trinity Sunday, May 31. If anyone is interested in being confirmed,

received or formally entered into the church, please contact the parish office to make arrangements.

At our Vestry meeting on April 21, 2015: Fr. John led us in

prayer, and a discussion about the meaning of the word Shalom. We filed the March financial report for review with the treasurer at a future meeting. Phil Scherer provided a report on the activities of the Rector Search Committee. The Summit was well attended and noted how positive the congregations input was. The Committee is incorporating the input into the Parish Profile, which will be sent out to applicants through the Dioceses. Susan Schueler has generously donated a decorative fence at the Memorial Garden. Harry and Scott presented a sketch incorporating the fence, a new walk and patio into a larger project at the rear entry of the church. Scott will meet with Buildings and Grounds to take the next steps. The Vestry unanimously approved Elizabeth Mitchell to the Rector Search Committee to fill a vacancy. Discussions are ongoing with the retail stores across Kennedy Ave to lease parking spaces in our lot. We will post future Vestry Meeting minutes on line and at St. Mark's. Thanks to Greg Premo for undertaking a new volunteer position - Lay Worship Coordinator working with greeters, and ushers. There is more roof work to be done over the front classroom windows. The Buildings and Grounds Committee will review proposals from Merrick Kemper for repairs. Fr. John led us in a closing Prayer. Harry Dumesnil

The Book Nook At twenty-two, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother’s death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life. With no experience or training, driven only by blind will, she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State—and she would do it alone. Told with suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her. Pick up a copy and join us in the Parlor for a lively discussion on May 21 at 7:00 P.M.. Questions? Contact Joyce Martin at 412-8881. ECW News… May 11, the ECW will take a day trip to the KY Railway Museum in New Haven, KY. We will enjoy a train ride through the Rolling Fork River Valley and visit the museum of historical locomotives. We will lunch nearby at a local restaurant. Contact Susan Schueler with any questions. June, July and August ECW will be on a hiatus. Meetings will resume in September at the home of Mary Helfrich. New Alcohol Policy: The Vestry has voted to adopt the Diocesan Alcohol Policy. Please review the on the policy on the next page.
