REGULAR VERBS• We form the past

simple of regular verbs by adding the suffix –ed to the infinitive.

e.g. Yesterday I worked in the evening.

The Spelling rules for the past:

• Inf. + -ed: e.g. want- wanted like-liked play-played

• Inf. ending –e + -de.g. arrive-arrived hate-hated love-loved

• Inf ending consonant + -y: -ied e.g. try-tried

• One- syllable verbs (CVC): double the cons. + -ed e.g. plan-planned stop-stopped

The pronunciation of the Past of Regular Verbs

• /t/ when the infinitive ends in a VOICELESS Consonant ( /p/, /k/,/ks/, /s/ , /f/, /h/, /Í/, /S/ ).

• /d/ when the infinitive ends in a VOICED Consonant (/ b/,/g/, / l/ , /m/, / n /, /r /– /v/ , / w /, /y /, /z /) or in a Vowel sound.
