Affirmative of Regular Verbs

All Persons add –ED to the Base Form:

I played

You laughed

He listened

She watched

We waited

They rememebered

SPELLING the –ED ending

Regular verbs ending in :- E : Add –D:I lived , you decided , he liked, …- Consonant + Y: IED:I studied, He tidied, …(vs: I played)

- 1 Vowel + 1 consonant: Double the consonant: She planned , they stopped, … (vs: he waited)

Pronouncing the –ED:

Three possibilities:

- /d/ as in cleaned

- /t/ as in kicked

- /id/ as in decided

NEGATIVE FORM

All Verbs (Regular and Irregular) and all persons are the same:

SUBJECT + Did not (didn’t) + Base Form

I drank but he didn’t drink

We went but she didn’t go

She phoned but I didn’t phone

We studied but they didn’t study

USE & TIME EXPRESSIONS

We use the Simple Past Tense for finished actions before the present.

You will see it with Time expressions showing Past:

Yesterday, last week / month/ … , in 2002,

2 hours / 3 days / a week/ …ago , When, etc
